Remember The Draft Thing?

Good article on Missouri pitcher Aaron Crow, could he possibly be the Rays' top pick in June? I'd have to guess it comes down to Pedro Alvarez, Crow, and Georgia HS shortstop Tim Beckham - described as a guy with "tools out of the roof", perhaps the next Barry Larkin?

Re: Remember The Draft Thing?
If I'm the Rays, I'd pick the guy who is most ready for the big leagues. Pedro Alvarez is my first guess, but didn't he get hurt? And what position would he play (he's a 3B)? Next, I would pick 1B Justin Smoak or P Brian Matusz. Beckham is a good choice, but at this time I think the Rays should go for guys who could contribute this year or next, not highschoolers. Too damn bad there isn't another guy like David Price. We hit the freakin jackpot when we landed this guy. And with the possible season we could have, our string of drafting #1's overall or even top 5's won't be happening for awhile (I HOPE!).

Why?  (Unless he is the best overall player of course.)

Re: Remember The Draft Thing?
Rays ownership wants to win NOW! If you haven't noticed, Price and Longoria both are polished college players who obviously need little time in the minors. Both will be big time contributers in the very near future. Which is why I suggested that the Rays will draft a player who will be able to play in the bigs by 2010. This is all one's opinion of course.

Re: Remember The Draft Thing?
Two Atlanta-area shortstops with the last name of Beckham are hot right now.

Tim Beckham is obviously getting the buzz for #1 pick, while University of Georgia and CCBL All-Star SS Gordon Beckham  (definitely not related) is destroying the SEC with a .530/.585/1.108 line with 13 HR's in 83 at-bats.
