Townsend to the Pen

Credit to Stacy Long

Injury-troubled pitcher Wade Townsend is moving to the bullpen, following an outing Wednesday where he was shelled for 6 runs in the eighth inning of a Double-A exhibition with the Yankees.

Townsend, the former 8th overall pick by the Rays in 2005 struggled through 21 starts at Single-A Columbus last year before he was sidelined by injuries a year after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Exciting
Townsend should be back to focusing on pitching this year, and in Montgomery we could see him set-up games for Eduardo Morlan.

Could we see them both in the Tampa pen next year? Townsend/Morlan/Percival perhaps, and in 2010 one takes over as closer?

Re: Exciting
Are we talking about the same Townsend who was mediocre in low A last year - now he's in the majors next? Not seeing it - too much wishing.

Re: Townsend to the Pen
I really hope he does work out as a reliever. At the same time, I wish he had signed with the O's. :(

Re: Townsend to the Pen
Jay Bruce would have looked good in the new uniforms.  Outfield problems solved right there.

Re: Townsend to the Pen
That's for sure. It's funny. We took Townsend with the 8th pick. The O's also took Townsend with the 8th pick the year before, too.

Re: Townsend to the Pen
I still think we could end up seeing a pen with Niemann, Townsend, and Morlan.

Re: Townsend to the Pen
I really believe that Townsend will have a Todd Van Poppel type of career.  Maybe one good season, but a journeyman for life.

Re: Townsend to the Pen
I'm not sure at this point how you can see him ever being a Van Poppel.  He screams never was.  I would love to see him teamed back up with the new Lurch, but I'm just not sure if Wade ever gets to AAA let alone MLB.

Re: Townsend to the Pen
Besides casually viewing his stats, I know next to nothing about Medlock. Is he any good?

Re: Townsend to the Pen
yeah, he hasn't been a good starter for 2 straight years now, i guess is it about time for this move. hope he converts well, and moves up quickly.

Re: Townsend to the Pen
what took them so long to move him to the pen? he could become a really good reliever and possibly a closer down the road and i think that he makes the majors as a reliever in the next 2 years with a really good and young bullpen with niemann, morlan,McGee,sonny, salas(if he solves his visa issues by them lol), and maybe chris mason! Man that bullpen would be lights out!

RayOfBoundlessOptimism
Where you been, haven't heard man, missed your 'run on like Piazza catching' sentences.

Man, you are the most relentlessly optimistic fellow I've ever crossed paths with, hence the name play. Every possible prospect will be a spectacular success as soon as possible - even the older ones who can't seem to find their way out of the D.R. What, Talbot won't be there for lights out long relief? Or will E-Jax handle that job.

Hey, dude, you're a fan, and fans have every right to Hope for the best. I'm just pulling your extraordinarily Hopeful leg. Looking forward to your wins projection if we all offer one at some point. I assume you'd bet the Vegas over. If you're old enough to gamble. If not, I know an honest bookie.
