Looking back, should we have done it?
Jorge Cantu, he was one of the best prospects in our system, had a phenomenal 06 year, and it all went down-hill from there. He was being brought up and down from Durham to the big leagues. He got fed up, didn't wanna play here, so he and Brian Cumberland and cash was traded to Cincy for Medlock and Shackelford. Now with our big hole in 2nd, should we have traded him?
Travis Harper, this guy must've been the worst pitcher I have ever seen. He was atrocious, we had him for 7 years, and he sucked in every one of those years. Should we have kept signing him?

And Medlock could prove to be a useful pen piece sooner rather than later, while Rocco might not even be in the majors - with the Fish no less - to start the season.

Anyone who likes Cantu more than Aki as an everyday 2nd baseman (or any other position, for that matter) should be charged with an E-4, imo.

Re: Looking back, should we have done it?
So the answer is yes, the Rays dealt with him exactly right, giving him an opportunity to prove himself when he was young which paid off with two solid years and then releasing him when he showed precipitous decline.
Cantu was not only an impossibly terrible second baseman who never took a walk. He also had become a malcontent and had to be traded. Receiving Medlock, even if he never pans out, was a good example of getting something for nothing.

Must be that 9-run outing against the Yankees in 2005 when good ol' Lou absolutely refused to pull him.

I believe that game was properly managed by Lou and while Harper couldn't get an out, he bore his burden very well. The Rays owe him one.
