It's Longoria Time
Per Lancaster:
Evan Longoria’s major-league debut may only be a day or two away. The Rays’ prized prospect was not in Durham’s lineup for the Bulls’ home opener tonight and Durham’s radio broadcast reported he is on his way to the majors.
I'm not sure what to say. Happy Longo day!?

Yay?!
I wonder if this will be a quick audition. If so, what will the Rays do if he mashes?

Keep him up and work on a long-term deal I assume.

I can't imagine the Rays would just shuttle Longoria around
The organization is so meticulous and careful about how they handle prospects that I don't think they'd call Longoria up if they didn't intend for him to stay.

so who goes? is longo already on the 40, or the 25?

No
He is on neither roster.

I really hope so
Though Aybar could be placed on the DL.

He'd have to go on the 60
regular DL doesn't open a spot. I'm sticking with Orvella as the out guy. Reinstate, then DFA.

I doubt we get rid of Haynes just as he start's hitting.
We may have seen the last of Orvella.

Why start his clock than bring him back down.
Unless he goes under the mendoza line I can't see him coming down.

The clock's been delayed just enough (seriously, the day of extending his clock one year) so that it's not an issue anymore.

I could see then sending him back
if he slumps. Provides a handy argument to get him under Super 2 service level.

Hinske
Some how, some way, he has to get his AB's. I love the heck out of him and he is proving me out pretty well. Good game tonight, and good to string a pair of wins together.

That would be nice.
It's a while off, but that lineup will be positively awesome when Floyd comes back.

I would switch Longoria and Hinske. You want to give Longo as much protection as possible and I think Hinske could do that better than Riggans/Navarro could.

Per Lancaster:
The Rays will officially purchase Longoria’s contract from Durham before tomorrow’s game after placing Willy Aybar on the 15-day disabled list tonight with a strained left hamstring. A move will need to be made to get Longoria on the 40-man roster, but that won’t be announced until tomorrow. The Rays may move reliever Chad Orvella from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.

What's physically wrong with Orvella?
by nyyfaninlaaland on Apr 12, 2008 2:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Apparently bicep tightness since early spring. Nobody is saying much about his condition.

He's had a tear in his Anteriorgoodbaseballpitcher since 2005
I'm thinking that the injury might be fatal.

I don't think Haynes will be dumped. He provides excellent defense at all 3 outfield positions, and the Rays are very attuned to defense this year. With Hinske or Gomes playing RF, Haynes will get a lot of work as a late inning replacement. I doubt they have as much confidence in Ruggiano's defense. When he is in RF, the Rays will have an awful lot of speed out there to cut off the gaps and get to long flies.
While it means nothing except as an aside, Haynes did take nice swings to get his 3 hits today, one of which started the big 8th inning rally. He really served the ball into left field.

who is getting dumped?
I searched the 40 man high and low-
here are my list of candidates-
1. Elliot Johnson
2. James Houser
3. RYYYYUUUUUU

Nobody
Orvella to the 60 day DL, and with Salas on the reserved list he doesn't count to the 40 man roster.

I kind of like Houser. He is a tall (6'4"), thin (185 lbs) lefty who seems to throw hard enough and has decent control. His minor league record is not bad. Last year in 103.2 IP at AA, he allowed 88 hits and 39 BBs with 90 Ks leading to a 3.65 ERA, not great, but not bad either. So far in 10 innings this year at AAk, he has given up 3 hits, 2 BBs and struck out 8 allowing 1 earned run.
I saw him a bit in spring training and he looked like he might be tough on lefties. He might ultimately end up in a major league bullpen.
My guess is Johnson's spring preserved his roster spot for the time being. More likely is what R.J suggests below.

Not to take a negative turn, but
isn't this just entirely too transparent? I guess the Aybar quad gives them cover, but I wonder...
All the talk about Longoria needing more development. 10 days in the minors. Apparently all he learned in that time was how to make more outs.
Really I'm sure Aybar is bad off enough, it's early and all that, and the Rays are plenty dinged up, so clearly this is the best option. It'll be interesting to see what happens if Longoria struggles when Aybar returns. I still think they'd return him to Durham in that case, and it would be the right move. How much could another 6 weeks hurt?
But I'm looking forward to seeing him play. Gotta pull for a 49'er Dirtbag I guess - my stepdaughters both graduated from there, and when I moved to CA my first wife (and mother of my son) got her Masters there. Of course I hope he goes 0-6 on Mon & Tues.
by nyyfaninlaaland on Apr 12, 2008 2:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It was transparent to begin with
I just expected it to come in two weeks, not today. Either way, we're actually calling our top prospects up to replace the injured rather than the Jae Kuk Ryu's and Joel Guzman's of the world, that's progress.
