The Rays have scheduled a “major” announcement by executive vice president Andrew Friedman for today at 1 p.m. at Tropicana Field.
No word yet on the nature of the announcement. It could be a free agent signing or a contract extension for a player or Manager Joe Maddon, but that’s only conjecture at this point.
Check back for details soon.

Both would be good guesses
I am hoping Kazmir, if only as a sign they are confident he is healthy. Though I would probably celebrate an Upton extension as well. If they really did sign Bonds I would go nuts…in a good way.

If it's just Longoria
as MVN.com/Rays suggests, then I really don’t get it. how long term of a contract could they possibly sign him too, since we already have him under control for the next 6 years?!

Extending Longoria...
is confusing at best.

agreed
i understand buying out arbitration years is something teams do. and it’s wise, once a player proves that his arb years are going to cost the team more the negotiate year by year then it will be to buy them out. seems they would wait until he really solidifies his value before possibly over-paying? who knows, maybe they got him on the cheap…

From the Heater, it is Longoria. It can certainly make sense. They may have bought out his arbitration years and perhaps some of his free agency years, or more likely they got options on those. That is the standard way to do it. Longoria gets security and the Rays get budget certainty with some flexibility in case Longoria does not produce as hoped.

wow
that’s cheap! we payed 30+ in a similar situation for baldelli and crawford. so we buy the arb years, and have two options to cover the first two free agent years? that sounds like a very nice deal to me.

The San Francisco chronicle reports that the Rays have claimed Dan Johnson off waivers. With Floyd out for a while, does he become the left handed DH with Hinske and Gomes sharing time in RF or Gomes doing DH duty if Haynes plays against lefties? I am assuming that Ruggiano gets sent down, and also speculating that the report is true, of course.
Is Johnson insurance for Pena?

i don't quite get it still
Ruggiano was hitting very well, even in his limited experience. And he is available to play RF, and play it decent. Johnson is strictly a 1B or DH. Also, Gomes has been hitting very well against both righties and lefties, and Hinske has been very solid against righties. I can only assume that Haynes will play RF against lefties with Gomes DH’ing and Hinske at 1st. or what? i don’t know, guess we’ll have to see.
