Doug Waechter sighting

He pitched 2 innings for the Marlins tonight (yes, the Rays-loving Marlins)

2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K, 0 ER

For those keeping track, former Rays turned Marlins:

Rays farmhands:  Jorge Cantu, Doug Waechter, Lee Gardner, Paul Hoover

Originally drafted by the Rays:  Andrew Miller, Mike Jacobs, Chris Leroux (A-ball)

Acquired by Rays:  Mark Hendrickson

In the Marlins system: Chris Seddon (AAA)

(Not included: minor league vets Willie Glen and Marcos Carvajal have spent time with both the Rays and then the Marlins)

Almost all those guys were originally drafted/signed by Dan Jennings.

Interesting

I wonder why they all tend to gravitate to South Florida?

Even still

It has to be more than that for that amount of players to follow a pipeline. I mean, Jacobs, Miller, and Leroux are one thing, but even still, the rest represent an exceedingly high number even with a connection.

Is it really though?

That’s 8 non-draftees, let’s look at Angels/Rays:
Haynes
Dunn
Paul
Percival

There’s four Angels we’ve acquired and we’ve inquired on Erstad (reportedly) and Kennedy.

But Jennings is just the scouting director with the Marlins

Maddon is the manager, and according to your own research, we’ve acquired half as many ex-players.

And Camp sets up with the Jays!

Big day for the alumni! It’s really gonna piss RJ off when Camp gets a Ray to GIDP started by McDonald.

Dammit. You're right.

Reclaimation Projects (Cantu and Waechter that is)

That’s why they are attractive to the Marlins. They are getting guys who showed something in the past for a cheap salary. If they rebound and meet their one-time potential they get great return on a minimal investment, which is important when you have the lowest payroll in MLB. Sounds like a team I know (Pena, Hinske, etc.)

Or maybe the Marlins execs just spend a lot of time watching FSN since they live in Florida. : )

P.S. I for one am definately looking forward to the opportunity for the Rays to finally benefit from a Shawn Camp relief appearance.

I think it is a combination of being cheap reclamation projects and Jennings’ familiarity with the players. Although he’s mostly involved in the scouting / player development department, he is also an assistant GM for the Fish.

Camp has appeared once, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up no hits, walks or runs while getting 3 strikeouts.
