Another Rally Killing Out Stealing
What's up with having Henske trying to steal second in the fourth inning? I don't have the statistics, but the Rays' base stealing percentage has got to be pretty low. It seems to me that the new age stat guys have pretty much proven that you have to be successful a very high percentage of the time to make the stolen base worth it. Ditto with the sacrifice bunt. No free outs!
Having said that, I am glad Navarro is trying to prove me wrong about his hitting. Last night and tonight (potentially, it's only the sixth inning) could be really great games to set a tone for the rest of the season.

Yeah I'm not sure what the deal was there
But you are correct. I think that it has been determined that you need to steal bases at a success rate of about 70% or more for them to be “worth it”, and you certainly don’t have a good chance of reaching that threshold with Hinske stealing.

Before tonight the Rays were stealing at a 60% rate which is awful. It is driving me crazy. I wonder if Maddon is trying to recreate the 2002 Angels. The problem is that that team was a high contact, high average relatively low power team, the opposite of the Rays.

gross most likely missed a sign (he was at bat), rather than a straight steal call by maddon. it was gross’ first start with a new team…

The stolen base helped last night
Some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you.
(BTW, Good point calmer, I had not thought of that)
