Garza to DL; Ryu Recalled, Won't Make Start
From Lancaster:
Following the game, the Rays put Matt Garza on the 15-day disabled list with radial nerve irritation and recalled Jae Kuk Ryu from Durham.
Ryu will be in the bullpen the next few days but won’t make the next scheduled start
Great, this is exactly what I wanted, more of this guy.

Sucktacular
Cant' help but think "wait till next year" upon nhearing this news. I think the front office agrees with me, or else they may have promoted their best AAA option (Niemann)

So i guess..
Ryu will be the long guy out of the pen, howell will be the 5th starter? any guesses?
That sounds about right
On the bright side, Delmon Young has yet to take a walk.

they will promote Niemann
he pitched today, and is on the same ule as Garza obviously. Ryu will remain with the team for a few days, then be outrighted when Niemann is called up to make Garza's next start.
Makes sense, but
why DFA Ryu? I'd designate Orvella, although that might be against the rules since he's on the DL. But he is eligible to come off, so activate him, DFA him, call Niemann, all after optioning Ryu. The latter is 3 years younger, can start or go in relief. Gotta give up on somebody - Ryu is participating in AAA, Orvella is an extra right now. Much more likely to go unclaimed in my mind, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Of course, they could...
(sorry about that last) just option Ryu and wait on the DFA move for when needed. Your use of "outright" threw me.

i think they might just outright him
he has been poor this year, and with promotions and injuries healing, he is going to get pushed out of the Durham rotation sooner rather then later. i could see us cutting ties with him now, calling him up and using him a couple times may just be to try and entice a trade.
What the fruck?
What in the world are we doing? Jae Kuk Ru? Are you kidding me? Only thing I can conjure up is that they want to bring up Kaz soon and don't want to disrupt Niemann's flow by bringing him up then sending him down.
Also, if Garza's injury turns out to be more serious than it is, than it will confirm my belief that we should have kept Delmon Young. Elliot Johnson just doesn't cut it for me as a RF. Or Nathan Haynes, or a hobbled Cliff Floyd. Only Gomes has a shot at really contrbuting, but it won't be on a consistent basis and his track record is not a good one. Hopefully he don't bow out after the All Star break.
Pen got burned tonight
so bringing an extra arm for a few days makes sense. DS is right on here. And Ryu can go multiple innings if required. Bringing Medlock - the only other healthy option for pen duty on the 40 man so not requiring a roster move since the roster is full - wouldn't provide that insurance.

The biggest problem is:
I think the biggest problem with this team right now is the pitching coach. A good percentage of our young pitchers have been accumulating injuries lately. The common thread: the pitching coach. Also, Maddon is a terrible manager. Why would he intentionally walk a batter in the 3rd inning with your pitcher struggling so bad and then intentionally walk the same guy again. He really makes some boneheaded decisions sometimes. I can see intentionally walking someone in the 7th inning or later but not so early in the game. Yesterday I knew we should of taken out hammel out after the fifth and he left him in. Result; he got lit up and put the game out of reach. Hammel is the type thats only good for going thru a line up twice. I watched him enough to know that. You would think his manager would know that. He really needs to go!
Pitching injuries are common
The Rays were very lucky in this area last season - unfortunately the worm may have turned a bit. But blaming the PC isn't the answer - same guy as when injuries were low last season.
And you can't keep pulling starters after 5 innings or your pen will be shot by mid-May. This whole issue with calling up Ryu highlights how the Rays are a bit thin there right now due to injury (and the prodigal Mr. Salas). There'll be lots more transactions to come, and some more roster moves will eventually have to be made.
It'll be interesting to see if they go with Howell in the short run or call up Niemann to take Garza's slot. I'd go with Niemann - better chance to provide more innings due to recent workload.
Hey, I feel your pain - looks like the Yanks may be putting Jeter and Posada on the DL.

Hey guys
just got back from game. Good atmosphere tonight. Couple questions.
What happened in the inning where the fans went boo crazy? I was getting lemonade and all I heard was a Mariner did not tag up or something.
Also on the BJ trying to get a triple, was he safe? I thought the ball was there but no tag in time. My dad said he heard the 3b was blocking the bag with his foot but I wanted to hear what you guys said.
I took a bunch of pics and I am uploading them now. If I have some good ones I will post them.

I agree that tonight's atmosphere was a BLAST.
Boo-fest #1 was in response to a foul ball caught by Riggans, ump immediately calling for a timeout, and the M's runner still advancing to second.
Fans got pretty disgruntled and by the time the Upton call came about the Trop was downright ROARING with disgust.
PS- He WAS safe....
K
I was pretty sure BJ was safe. BJ was pissed, I think I got a good shot of him yelling at ump.
I wonder how the crowd will be tomorow night.

No way
Not even close. If it's half of that, we'll have a good night.

It was close but Upton appeared safe. Even the M's announcers thought Upton got in before the tag.
The tag up to second was just a good hustle play by Lopez. Riggans or whoever was responsible for calling timeout was late in doing so and the M's took advantage and it paid off.
I'm surprised the game was even close with the bad call (Upton at third), bad luck (Upton's shoe), bad pitching among other things last night.
Did I mention I hate intentional walks.. especially in the third inning.
Anything over 12,000 in attendance tonight would be shocking.
I agree with every point you made
The Lopez/Riggans call was made correctly. The Upton call was blatantly missed. And I'm surprised that the game was even close enough for that play to matter.

As a Mariner fan watching the game,
I agree with you about the Upton call. However, the Lopez "steal" of second was legit. I saw multiple replays, and the ump's call of time out was late.
What has Ryu done wrong this year? I mean, he's only pitched 3 innings, but he only got 1 ER and 5 H with 4 K and 0 BB.
Besides, J.P. Howell hasn't done bad this year, either. He was scoreless in his long relief against the Yankees. He can pull a stopgap, and if Garza is really screwed over, we have Niemann we can bring up.
We're seven games into the season. Don't panic.
not sure where you get your stats
but hes gone 4 innings, with 3ER, and 4 hits, with one BB, for a 6.75era.
BJ on the play where he was "out" at 3rd (notice shoe)

Damn
I can't help but feel like I cursed Garza when I noticed that thing on his elbow and said something about it. 1 inning later he's going on the DL....
for those who missed it:

Hey
Did you guys read the article about Garza getting injured on the Rays website?
While Rays manager Joe Maddon said he had no prior knowledge of the injury, Garza told the media following the game that the problem surfaced late last year."It's been gradually hurting, but I've fought it off," Garza said.
WTF Garza? Hiding an arm injury from us?!?! If we knew about that would we have made the trade?
