Another One Drops; Floyd to the DL
From Lancaster:
An MRI on DH/OF Cliff Floyd’s right knee revealed a torn medial meniscus that will require surgery to repair. The surgery will be performed Friday by Rays orthopedist Koco Eaton and Floyd was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Ruggiano has been re-called and will be at the Trop in time for the game. Man, this is getting ridiculous and since it seems like everyone I praise falls to an injury I'll just say at least Justin Ruggiano will get his shot. That or...

In all fairness..
I just had a wisdom tooth pulled (first one finally at age 30) so it was already on my mind.

Also
Please platoon Gomes/Hinske at DH and let Ruggiano play RF full-time.

I agree completely
Let's see what we have with Ruggiano while the opportunity presents itself. It may not come under the perfect circumstances, but we have to evaluate the roster based on what we have and not what we hoped for. Is Ruggiano stronger than Floyd as a hitter? Almost certainly not, but we can slot him in and see what happens. At the very least, we get a good defensive outfielder and the team gets to move a liability defensively to the DH slot, where they can be beneficial. The move makes too much sense.

Beelzebub's revenge
For the Rays, the DL does not mean disabled list. It now stands for the Devil’s League and its Beelzebub’s revenge for the organization dropping his moniker from the team. The Prince of Darkness is now determined to reclaim the team one player at a time by putting them on the DL (the Devil’s League). If that’s the plan, I guess Glover should remain healthy all year.
so how long's he gonna be out? and what's up wtih garza saying he's had the injury for a year but not telling anyone? we wouldn't have traded for him if we knew that
6-8 weeks

i just watched the 3rd inning on mlb.tv cuz i missed it yesterday. that was hard to watch. i really felt bad for garza
don't feel bad
he knew there was something wrong with him, and yet did nothing about it over the summer to heal the problem (as far as we know). i feel bad for me, and for you, and for the team, that now has to have either jackson and hammel in the lineup for a longer period of time.
Floyd's DL stint could be a blessing
in a good disguise. But Ruggiano will now get a chance to show what he can bring, Haynes settles in as a true backup, and Hinske and Gomes can DH. When Floyd returns Ruggy either sticks, goes back to Durham,or backs up. More options, better sense of what you've got for '09. Let's remember it's about '09 and beyond. Not enough progress was made in looking at real long term help in '07 (no action for Niemann or Ruggiano) somewhat because of injury as well (Riggans). The plan remains intact, with options for the future. Get some looks at guys in relief roles to see if they can perform there (Jax, Hammel, Howell) when the starters are back. Call ups for promising complementary pieces like Perez, Jaso, Medlock, Talbot. Hopefully Salas reappears. Screw the minors championships.
The expectations for this season have been driven too high - the org should be trumpeting the strong possibility this will be the best Rays team ever. Keep the bar low, so expectations can be met. 75 wins will be a nice season - I know all are excited but don't let that become a failure!
75 would be a disappointment if every went our way, obviously it won't
But man, I wanted 81.

But you've got neither at this point
My point is don't let the best season ever become a downer. The game isn't a PECOTA sim. Set expectations appropriately, become joyous if expectations are exceeded. It's not about the hardcores - the fever has to spread. Learn to love the bandwagon - drive the bandwagon!
More fans means more revenue means keeping / getting good players means fans identifying with the team means more fans, and so on.

exactly
In talking to friends, they said they wouldn't be excited w/ 75 wins. I said that it was more than we'd ever won, but they only think in terms of winning. If the media and NDRO drove the bandwagon the right way people might think differently.
The problem is the media and fandom in the Bay area are a fickle bunch. They seem the be the worst about waiting for a team to be playoff conteneders before caring. Look at the Bucs now vs 10-12 years ago. Even once they had started to turn it around through smart moves (like the Rays are doing) the local media still lambasted them as losers after losses.
No Bueno
It's early in the season but I am already dissapointed. Our revamped starting rotation is looking a lot like last year's. Our bullpen is more experienced but still prone to give up a lot of runs. Our RF situation is terrible in my opinion. Hinske and Gomes are slow as hell, Ruggiano is inexperienced, and I don't even know why we have Elliot Johnson and the dude from the Angels. We low-balled Kenny Lofton and haven't given enough thought to Bonds. If they want a new stadium sign Bonds. I was at opening day and last night's game...there were half as many people at last night's game then there were on tuesday. That is a bad sign for this organization. If you want a new stadium, you may want to at least half-fill the old one.
'Our revamped starting rotation is looking a lot like last year's."
I don't recall our rotation last year having something like 6 of 8 starts allowing four or less earned runs...
