Crawford hacking.. just how bad?
So I went looking at ESPN's sortable stats to determine just how bad Crawford's hacking has been this year.
Carl Crawford (AL Rank out of 98 qualified batters based on at-bats):
Pick you stat..
P/PA: 3.06 (last in American League)
BB: 3 (90th out of 98; Jason Bartlett (2) is last)
BB/PA: .024 (93rd out of 98)
BB/K: 0.20 (94th out of 98.. Jason Bartlett is 97th at 0.13)
The O's announcers last night made an interesting comment concerning Bartlett. They said they talked to either Steve Henderson or George Hendrick (don't remember who exactly) and he said Bartlett was simply pressing, trying to impress his new team and they weren't overly concerned about his slow start.
I'm more concerned about Crawford due to his history of hacking.. but this is both ridiculous and depressing as I'd hoped we would see some improvement by this point in his career.

Crawford vs. Delmon
Crawford has 3 walks with 119 ABs while Delmon has 6 with 102 ABs. Young has also walked once in 3 of his last 4 games. I only mention that because when you hack more than Delmon you are not in good company.

Now look at stats that matter
Crawfords got 26 runs scored which is more than 10 more than the next player on the team, hes got 3 triples(which seem to come in clutch spots), 2 homeruns, and he’s tied for 2nd on the team with 16 RBIs. And oh by the way he’s got 8 stolen bases. His average is climbing pretty steadily, and he had to go ahead RBIs today. Crawford’s done enough at the major league level to avoid being compared to Delmon Young, ever.

His OBP is .301, he's played and is playing below average baseball.

I suppose if you are happy with Crawford not playing up to his full potential, then so be it.. but I personally find it frustrating that Crawford is content to swing at just about anything. His approach to this point early in the season hurts himself and the team. He’s better than that and should be progressing instead of regressing at this point in his career.

All I’m looking for are signs of progress, for Crawford to take that “next step” and become a more complete ballplayer. Small sample or not, this is discouraging and coming on the heels of a year when his overall statistical performance was basically flat or slightly down compared to the year before. Sure, his numbers will most likely even out as the year progresses and he’ll end up at least close to what he had the previous two years, but personally I was hoping for more. Maybe my expectations for Crawford are too high, he is what he is, which is still pretty darn good when all is said and done despite a lack of selectivity at the plate.

I'm not overreacting
For the month of April he hasn’t been good. His K/BB%es are the lowest of his career, just raise the BB% and we’re good.
