Red Sox release one-time top prospect LHP Abe Alvarez
From RotoWorld.com
Alvarez was once thought of as a top prospect within the organization and received all kinds of love from Peter Gammons, but began this season at Triple-A for the fourth straight year, posting a 6.46 ERA and 8/11 K/BB ratio in 15 1/3 innings. He's still just 25 years old and figures to latch on somewhere, but has a 5.14 ERA in 378 career innings at Triple-A.
Is Alvarez worth picking up to put on the Durham Bulls roster? As a one-time top prospect you'd think he must have some skills worth taking at shot at salvaging.

He hasn't posted an ERA under 4 since 2004

Durham just added a solid LHP
Kirk Birkins, if no one else wants him, we can give him a few bags of chips to pitch but I don’t see us going after him.

Birkins is a RP. Alvarez is a Starter. LH are a commodity, I’d like to see the Rays take a shot at resurrecting the kid. He’s only 25, maybe being released was the wake up call he needed.

Serious physical problem
Gammons loved him, but (a) his stuff was never that good to begin with, (b) even most statheads were wary of him and© he’s blind in one eye, which makes his problems harder to fix than with other guys because he has no depth perception. Not worth the roster space, IMHO. Ben Hendrickson is a similar type of reclamation project in Durham right now.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
