HEY

Hey, I’m a Mariners fan, and this is my first post here. I got way more into baseball in the offseason so I decided to start following the Rays and A’s as well.
So now I’m here. I have a question, though… Why is Howell not in the starting rotation? I always thought he had more potential than Hammel, Jackson, and Sonnanstine (and just checking now, Baseball Prospectus agrees with me).

Thanks. I can’t wait for the Rays’ series in Safeco…

Doesn't have the velocity to start it seems. He sits at 85ish, 87 from the pen.

b/c he sucks as a starter,

and is lights out as a reliever.

hence, in the bullpen is where he will stay.

I know Mariners fans have always been big fans of JP.

I think Howell will find his way into the rotation if it becomes a necessity. No coincidence IMO that Howell improves when the defense improved. His command also seems to be much better (without looking at his numbers).

Howell = human vulture
Gomes = baserunning specialist
Gross = I heart him

Out of the pen, Howell can nibble around the plate as much as he wants. Don’t mess with it. The less of Glover, Dohmann and Miller, the better.

Longlorious.

I'll have to eat crow too

I’ve been saying Sonny should be in a role similar to JP’s. Relief, one time through the lineup at most, then gone. But he’s looking better and better, even developing some swagger out there.

I’m more than happy to be wrong about Sonny, and I hope I am wrong about E-Jax too. He put up some good peripherals last night to match a lot of pitch movement. How about that change up he has been mixing in? That’s new, isn’t it? I don’t recall him using a change up much in the past.

ok i have been down on e-jax forever but i am really coming around on him, i always knew he had the talent and was extremely excited when we traded for him because the dodgers always rush their pitching prospects and he is finally pitching to his potential and i would like to publically apoligize to you edwin jackson i now believe in you!!

Policies

These are not fan unfriendly policies. They are simply returning to normal policies around the majors after 2 years of special service, and many special services remain.

Fans have every right to decide for themselves whether it is worth going. I do not endorse the finger pointing as if local citizens are obligated to spend money at the ballpark. But I also think it unfair to suggest that the team discourages fan attendance or that it is less than accommodating.

Speaking as a DBacks fan, this is great to see.

The 1998 expansion teams currently have the best records in their respective leagues(or will once Arizona finishes off Colorado shortly).

We would love to play you guys in the WS. It would be epic.

Congratulations you guys. You deserve this. Keep it up.

Rays Caps?

I can’t find a Twin Enterprise Franchise Cap for the Rays online? Everywhere seems to be out, or like they aren’t making it. Franchise caps are like the only hats I where, anyone know where to get one?

P.S. Lots of DEVIL Rays hats still available though.

by phil333 on May 14, 2008 9:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

About those caps

A couple weeks back I was digging through some of my things and stumbed across a 1st gen D-Rays cap I had. I remember I got it back in high school during a school function which involved me going to a Marlins game in Miami. I managed to get four autographs on it; I recongize two as Roberto Hernandez and Kevin Stocker, but I can’t make out the other two.

Anyway, I walked around all day running errands wearing that retro, hideous hat last weekend. Made me feel good that I had stuck with this team for that long.

by kericr on May 14, 2008 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

here's an interesting comment, from the NYTIMES article this morning...

“Rodriguez’s replacements have been Morgan Ensberg, Wilson Betemit and Alberto González. Posada’s replacement, José Molina, is in a 4-for-42 slump. Even so, said the hitting coach Kevin Long, the Yankees should have enough offense to get by.

"Realistically, we should score about five runs a game if a guy’s not on his game," Long said. "A guy like tonight [Jackson], we could probably push across three runs with the stuff he had. Last night’s guy [Garza], we probably could have got more.”

is he right? should they have had 5+ runs against Garza’s stuff, and at least 3 against Jackson last night? or is this just disrespect? do we as fans not see realistically how a pitcher is pitching, only how the other team is not-hitting?

by davidsmarch on May 14, 2008 11:30 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Is he right?

I think it is an interesting but ultimately futile question. The Yankees are much less potent without arguably the best hitter in baseball and an elite offensive catcher. And surely they are harder to replace with approximate value as say Floyd was with the Rays.

But part of being a good team is overcoming injury and adversity. Whether comparable or not, Pena was considered crucial to the Rays’ offense and he has struggled terribly as have others, yet the Rays are winning. Is that because other teams pitch poorly or because the Rays are hitting at the right time?

Nobody “should” score x number of runs against a major league pitcher. Garza wasn’t striking out many, something that does concern some of us, but he was hitting spots with good fastballs and inducing a lot of popups. And Jackson had command as well with solid stuff. Saying the Yankees should have scored more is like saying teams should have scored more off Maddux all these years. Or that the Rays “should” have scored 5 runs off Wang.

Perhaps the Yankees will make adjustments and start hitting, but trying to determine if a team wins because of what it does or what the other team fails to do is usually a useless exercise. I don’t think it is disrespect, just the normal way for fans (or columnists) to view the game. When the Rays were losing, we blamed our own players for screwing up rather than saying how well the other team played.
