Kazmir Signs 4/28.5 Million Deal

The Rays and ace LHP Scott Kazmir have agreed on a four-year contract extension, which will guarantee the lefty $28.5 million and has a maxium value of approximately $39.5 million.

Per St. Pete Times.

The 2012 season is a team option, so essentially the Rays have bought out an extra two seasons at roughly 7 mil per year.  Very, VERY good deal, barring Kazmir's arm falling off. Knock on wood. God why'd I say that...so stupid.

bandwagon

I can root for you guys. Your in the AL, and I absolutely hate Boston and NYM.

For the record, I was drinking the Rays kool-aid before the season. I got Pena, Upton, Crawford, Longoria, and Kaz on my fantasy team.

I love the RO!

How’d we ever make it this far when Namoli was at the helm? I’m so glad he’s gone and I love the Rays Organization!

Something tells me...

Upton isn’t going to sign. Kalas was talking to Friedman during the game and this came up; he responded in such a way that I felt he was already waving the white flag on getting him locked up. It sounded like Upton was going to play out his arbitration years and go after a big money deal in FA.

not so fast...

hey some people thought that we had no chance to sign kaz so i think that upton is within reach, because why would he want to leave here?

This is different

Kazmir at the end of last year specifically vented about the inability to compete that the team posessed in the form it was at then hinted that he would not sign for a team that did not have a chance to compete. This was a complaint he voiced constantly throughout the last two years. The Rays spent money in the off-season, got parts, and are showing now that they are in fact, very competitive. What have we heard BJ complain about over the last 18 months? Nothing. It’s too quiet. If he has no grievences, he should be looking to sign long term, and the only reason why he wouldn’t is because of the money.

Also, and I don’t know if I can place enough emphasis on this because I have to recall it from memory, but did you actually hear Friedman’s response to the question about getting ‘other players, like Upton’ signed long term? If I recall correctly, Friedman did not respond with the standard we’ve heard him say, which is ‘we’re working to secure all of our important pieces to long-term deals.’ Instead, he essentially said, ‘we try to secure our players, sometimes we can get them, and sometimes we can’t.’ This came as a shock to me because in reality, who else could he possibly be talking about? The only young, major piece on this team not signed to a long-term deal is Upton. I know it’s really too early to say whether he’ll sign or not; to me though, it just doesn’t look good.

Yeah, you never know. He may play an arb year or two, or even make it to free agency, and decide to sign when we open the new stadium.

I got 5 letters hinting to the next big sign......

U-P-T-O-N If we don’t sign this soon to be perennial All Star then we’d be fools. You can’t say enough good things about this new ownership group. I mean, these guys are doing an UNBELIEVABLE job. This is what I envisioned when I found out we were granted a MLB team back in 1995. It’s been a long time coming.

Upton

Is an absolutely necessity to resign. All this means nothing if you guys don’t.

He's probably going year-by-year

Justin and him rather take it year-by-year than lock themselves into multi-year deals.

Awesome deal all around!

If you want results, press the red button. The rest are useless.

Terrific deal for both sides

Rays get below market value and are only tied for 3 years with control of the 4th. These are our prime years for contention, and by the time we have to decide about Scott, our elite prospects should be fully matured. Kazmir gets guaranteed money for 3 years no matter what and hits free agency during his peak at age 28 (or 27, but unlikely if he is good). How many pitchers of Kazmir’s expected quality are free agents at 28?

Dont we have Upton through 2012?

I would rather not pay him yet. Let him play, and continue proving himself.
