July
So leaving the game last night my friends and I got into one of the most fun Ray's discussions I have had in a while. Although it is premature and cannot happen until the attendance gets there, we were talking about being on the opposite of a major trade come July. Assuming we are still in the hunt, and knowing we have a very deep organization, who would you like to see the Rays make a run at? The conversation started with our needs which quickly went towards a right handed power hitting RF, lead off RF, or front line starter. Names got thrown out like Oswalt, and Dye and Ethier. And then we had to decide who we would part with - McGee, Davis, Nieman? And then tonight on mlbtraderumors I noticed that Holliday is on the block. He might demand more than our market can handle, but damn he would fit in perfectly here. So, without stating the obvious of how far away this really is, I would like to hear who the fans want to see in the new Rays gear. I also want to say that I absolutely LOVE the makeup of this team right now, but do feel we will need one more piece to take it all the way.

Away from Coors
.274 .337 .445 .782
Do we REALLY want to sell the farm for him?

I don't think Dan O'Dowd would.

isn't Coors more of a pitchers park now?
I could be wrong. Either way, that isnt a good thing.
Just off he top of my head how about someone like Shane Victorino? As high as the Phillies are on Victorino, maybe Jayson Werth has made someone like him expendable.
Jermaine Dye makes sense to me, because he plays good defense and is off to a good start, and Im a fan
Maybe we make another deal with Minny, this time for Michael Cuddyer
Andre Ethier and Michael Young would be interesting

No
Coors is still heavily a hitter’s park, but the Rockies had a ton of groundball pitchers with good defense that made it seem like Coors wasn’t a launching pad.
Cuddyer just signed an extension, so that’s a no go.

July Trade Choice
Jeff Niemann and Chris Mason to the Pirates for Nate McLouth who bats leadoff and is the everyday RF for us. Pirates have other young outfielders coming in S. Pearce and A. McCutchen so they may make a deal like this and we have the extra arms to get the final piece that would stack us up to play in Oct.

Career .797 OPS in the crappy NL Central
Think about what he’d do in the AL East.

Not just the NL Central, he played in RFK which is essentially a no fly zone.

You know
This is one of those “platoons suck” situations, because each of our RFers are playing above average right now.
Gross: .227 .327 .409
Gomes: .225 .325 .423
Hinske: .259 .360 .537
Why do we really need to make a move for another outfielder?

I’d rather us go after a guy like Justin Speier (not sure why, but his BB rate is off the charts right now, and his BABIP is far too high for him) for cheap you do it. Reyes probably isn’t coming back next year, and he’d be a really nice piece to add.

It matters on the deal imo
I do not want to sell the farm. I don’t think getting Speier would take the farm but someone like Holliday would.

I'm all for buying low.
I don’t think we can afford to be too promiscuous with our prospects at this point. That’s why I don’t see a Jason Bay type being feasible, yes the Rays are willing to spend money, but that doesn’t mean you absolutely HAVE to add a “legit” right fielder, not when right field isn’t a problem for us.
Also I love how Gross comes in around the 7th to play defense for us. Beautiful, just beautiful, especially if Reyes and his flyball tendencies are pitching.

I agree with you
I am totally fine with the platoon. Gomes and Hinske hit while Gross plays Defense after the 7th. They have been a solid platoon and I believe will keep it up. I don’t think we should sell the farm long term for a RF.

Does he have a no-trade clause?
Because I thought he signed with Anaheim specifically because he wanted to be on the west coast. I’m not sure it would be worth acquiring a player who would be unhappy at the prospect of coming here.

McLouth would fit right in
and if all they would accept him is niemann and a another prospect then i would do it, but by then rocco baldelli might be back and is just like acquiring a top rightfielder for nothing so maybe the rays should wait out the rocco health situation because it seems he might be close to going on a rehab assignment if he has been takeing BP so maybe he might be back in a month or 2 if his health holds up ( knock on wood)
by RaysOfHope on May 15, 2008 10:52 PM EDT 0 recs

if the reds eat most of juniors contract then i could see a deal getting done but what would they want for junior?

Clearing logjams
I think the Rays trade now only to get some value for players for whom they have no room. That means doing something when Aybar is ready or perhaps if they want to promote Balfour or get something for a DFAed player like Dohmann. I don’t see them tinkering with the roster just to add marginal value, nor do I see them raping the farm for a fading star or questionable talent.
As badly as some teams have played, nobody is out of the race on May 15. The largest deficit is 11 games, and I don’t think Cincinnati is giving up anyone now for prospects. Things may change as we near July 31, of course.
by bobr on May 15, 2008 11:17 PM EDT 0 recs
Biggest Need Come July Will Likely Be...
...A Starting Pitcher.
We have plenty of depth in the OF, no need to address that by dealing away our future. As much as I love our starting pitching right now none of them have ever been in a situation with the playoffs on the line. If we trade for anyone I think bringing in a solid veteran SP would make the most sense.
by floridaroar on May 16, 2008 12:05 AM EDT 0 recs
I dont see the need for a SP. The 2003 Marlins didnt need a veteran presence. You just have to put faith in what guys like Kazmir and Shields have done in big games. PLaying in front of 50,000 at Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park is a pressure situation no matter what month it is.
Id much rather see the SP help come from Niemann, Talbot, Mason or even Price. Bullpen help could come from Salas, Hammel, Sonny, or even Morlan whom Twins scouts projected could skip AAA all together.
by blazinrayz on May 16, 2008 3:04 AM EDT 0 recs
BUT, BUT, BUT.....

this guy gets not love. But I dont think pitching is our problem right now – producing runs is. Maybe we ship out Hinske with some youth? And I think everyone forgets that prospects are just that – prospects (and we have plenty of them)
