et Rid Of Garza

Seriously, it's bad when Edwin Jackson is pitching better than this scribe. He brings nothing to the table except for losses in an already stellar and amazing Rays team. Anything. Trade him for money to get White Snake Kenny Lofton, or just move Howell back up to rotation and put this klutz down in bullpen. He's the only real "Why god why" we have in our rotation, taking over the ever elusive spot from Jackson.

Please?

At this point Garza = Edwin

Which embarrasses me thoroughly.

Howell

Howell would get rocked as a starter too. Put Hammel back in the rotation and send garza to the pen.

I've said all along we never should have traded Delmon....

Ist of all, we never would have had this RF carousel with Gomes/Gross/Hinske/Floyd. And 2nd, Garza never amounted to much in Minnesota and had a bad rap sheet to boot. It’s like we were trading one whine ass for the other. While Delmon Young may still have been a sour apple in the clubhouse, he is a better replacement than any of the 4 there now (I know, I know, he has had a pretty crappy start in Minnesota). With that said, we could have utilized that precious spot that Garza is stinkin up and given it to Niemann or some other deserving homegrown talent.

He is a better replacement than any of the 4 there now

No, he’s not. His OPS is .640, that’s sucktastic and worse than each of our RF options.

Can people pull their heads out of the sand and realize that platoons aren’t evil? God.

This is truly crazy

Garza has been disappointing, and R.J. is right in comparing his performance so far to Edwin’s, but to say he is not a good pitcher is total nonsense. He was pretty good last year as a 23 year old, and since returning from injury improved in every start until this one. Admittedly his peripherals are poor, but there is no reason given past performance and his stuff to assume that is not capable of significant improvement. To be so impatient with a 24 year old is unbelievably short-sighted.

As for the trade, I won’t even comment further on the truly horrible player Delmon has been, last year and this. On the contrary, I will concede that he may become a Hall of Famer (I don’t believe that, but no matter). It has nothing to do with the deal. This deal may work out brilliantly for Minnesota (in spite of all evidence so far that they got screwed) and it would still be a steal for the Rays.

We got a starting pitcher dramatically better than whom he replaced and a shortstop who has cemented the core reason this team is winning-defense-and all that matters is what they do for us, not what Young might have done. And given that the so-called carousel has produced beyond words better than Young so far, any regrets are ludicrous.

As for bad rap sheets, that is becoming about as tiresome a stupid cliche as is possible. Just about every young player who disappoints or has any altercations gets some such idiotic rap sheet (as do most players who displease someone). In fact, Pena had a bad rap sheet early in his career as has Upton, Kazmir (in particular with Mets’ veterans) and Navarro. People really have to stop resorting to that sort of nonsense argument.

by bobr on May 17, 2008 8:57 PM EDT   0 recs

Short-sighted is exactly right...

I’m glad the Rays see the long term picture and don’t just write 24 year old pitchers off after a bad start like many on this board do. The patience they have shown will pay off next year and for many years to come. If you the think the Rays are good now, wait until next year when guys like Jackson and Garza are consistantly above average starters.

Apparently, it’s impossible to have a pitching discussion without playing the E-Jax (Jack of Diamonds?) card.

Panic much?

This could have been written about every starter on the Rays at one time or another. Anybody remember the “fans” cry to send Shields to the pen early last season because he couldn’t get through the order more than once without his #’s taking a dive?

Garza will be fine.

by ttnorm on May 17, 2008 9:02 PM EDT   0 recs

Correction: Garza is E-Jax without the fanfare.

He had a good run of starts and nobody screamed how he was improving. Although his K:BB rate and pitch usage is a bit concerning to me, I trust that Hickey is instructing him on what he feels is best for Garza.

by R.J. Anderson on May 17, 2008 9:05 PM EDT   0 recs

Garza doesn't need the fanfare....

he’s generally accepted as a young pitcher with a bright future and due patience is generally given. Jackson, on the other hand, despite being younger, is too often the subject of great criticism that necessitates some of the more rational among us to point out that he is on his way to becoming a good pitcher as well.

by save_the_trop on May 17, 2008 11:05 PM EDT   0 recs

that necessitates some of the more rational among us to point out that he is on his way to becoming a good pitcher as well.

You’re so right, using numbers =/= being rational.

by R.J. Anderson on May 17, 2008 11:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Tell me why it's not rational...

to give Jackson the same leeway that most give Garza. Garza rarely faces the same criticism as Jackson despite being a very similar pitcher. They are the same age, are both power pitchers with plus stuff, and can be maddeningly iconsistant. If anything, Jackson has had many more dominant starts that Garza and comes without some of the character issues that Garza supposedly has exhibited in the past.

by save_the_trop on May 17, 2008 11:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Dude, he has no character issues.

He didn’t take well to some coaching. That’s it. Kazmir has the same “character issues” with some other stuff thrown in, do you bitch about that?

It was reported that the Twins had soured on Garza...

due to these issues. I don’t think it will be a problem going forward but it’s something to take into account. Anyway, tell me why it’s irrational.

by save_the_trop on May 17, 2008 11:40 PM EDT   0 recs

I didn't say it was irrational.

I said these “issues” were a bit overblown considering he’s worked well with Hickey. Obviously they should be taken into account, but apparently they don’t exist here, yet.

If it's not irrational...

then why all of the negativity toward Jackson and not Garza.

by save_the_trop on May 18, 2008 12:07 AM EDT   0 recs

Familiarity breeds contempt, and Jackson has had far more time A) healthy and B) with Hickey/Shields.

I really see signs that he is coming around...

if he does, it will be a huge boost for the Rays. He just has to get mentally tougher. With Garza, I am honestly more skeptical but it’s too early to tell.

Garza Apologists

Are sad.

Fine, lets discuss Glover being a POS. Please just drop him Maddon.

by Sylar on May 18, 2008 12:11 AM EDT   0 recs

Also

Garza is one of the worst young pitchers around. He relys on his fast ball in every.single.game and he’s always done this. It’s like he’s afraid to do anything else but a fastball.

by Sylar on May 18, 2008 12:12 AM EDT   0 recs

What??

No, he has a plus 4 seam and a nasty 2 seamer. Lets not forget that he only needed like 10 or so breaking balls to shut down the Yankees a week ago. If thats what works for him let him do it. Granted he still has things to learn, he is young and has the talent to adjust. It’s only May, let the season play out. He will be fine.

Yes lets congratulate him

On shutting down a last place team.

?????

On what do you base this outrageous statement? On the 33 major league games and 170 major league innings pitched between ages 22- 24. During which time he has a respectable if not great 4.35 ERA with .92/9 HR ratio, unimpressive but promising 3.75 BB/9 and 6.46 K/9 ratios? At his age 23 major league season that he finished with very good 3.69 ERA and a 118 ERA+?

Perhaps you checked his age 21-23 minor league record, to wit a 2.96 ERA with 2.55 BB/9 and 10.03 K/9? Or the 1.11 WHIP? Or the .56/9 HR rate?

Or maybe you missed the point that he is demonstrating excellent coachability in TB, that throwing his fastball against the Yankees was smart pitching and that he is still recently off an injury and might be working on getting the feel of his pitches? Perhaps too you missed the harping by the Rays coaches that they want their pitchers to work off their fastballs and that quite the contrary to being “afraid” to try anything else, he is developing an understanding of the best way to use his exceptional stuff?

After all this time and observation of the Rays, perhaps you also missed the point that drawing conclusions from one or two games is foolish.

It is legitimate to be concerned about his high walk rate and low K rate recently, but to jump from that to asserting he is “one of the worst young pitchers around” is beyond the pale of reason. And so too is referring to NY as a last place team when it is just May. While literally true at this moment, it is a silly misleading view of the offensive talent on the Yankees even without A-Rod and Posada.

Price

Whats the timetable for Price, late 200Rayght right?

by Sorry About Dresden on May 18, 2008 1:33 AM EDT   0 recs

Timetables

I don’t think the Rays set timetables, at least not rigid ones. As we have seen, they are very conservative about promoting prospects, although flexible enough to move one quickly if it seems advisable. I refer here to Longoria’s rapid trip from rookie ball to AA.

But otherwise, my impression is they want to have a long look at prospects before moving them up and would rather keep working on skills at their current level than trying to improve at the next one. I thought it possible, for example, that Davis might already be at Durham given his excellent season at Montgomery in 2007, but his early season in AA, while ok, has not been dominating, and he is still there.

That tendency is probably even more pronounced when considering players for the major league team. Maybe he gets a September look this year, but only if his season is so outstanding that it makes obvious sense. It would not surprise me if he remains in the minors next year as well barring some extraordinary performance. Since he is already on the 40 man roster, I think, it probably makes little difference if they bring him up or not, so that might convince them to give him some major league experience earlier than they would another prospect, but not if they do not deem him ready to succeed here.

by bobr on May 18, 2008 8:40 AM EDT   0 recs

Number don't lie

While I will admit that Garza does have a winning record at 2-1, Numbers don’t lie. His ERA is 4.86. His WHIP is 1.54 and for his career his BAA is nearly .300. He has given up 41 hits in 37 innings pitched so far this year and walks more guys than he strikes out.

For now he deserves respect. And a chance to prove he is a frontline starter. And hell, he can have the crappiest numbers, I don’t care so long as he’s WINNING!!! (See Andy Sonnanstine)

by Rays Rule on May 18, 2008 3:55 PM EDT   0 recs

And hell, he can have the crappiest numbers, I don’t care so long as he’s WINNING!!! (See Andy Sonnanstine)

That’s so amazingly incorrect that I can barely process it. Of the three non-ace pitchers you actually chose the one with the BEST sustainable peripherals to claim he had bad numbers? What?!

by R.J. Anderson on May 18, 2008 5:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Numbers do lie

if you use the wrong numbers or interpret them incorrectly. Using wins as a measure of a pitcher is about as wrong as a person can get.

Additionally if you use 37 innings of pitching by a 24 year old pitcher, the numbers are relatively meaningless, especially if other factors, like 307 minor league innings or 83 major league innings in a previous year tell a different story.

And further, it is not a question of being a frontline starter, although there remains a possibility he will be. An error many of us make is being disappointed because a player does not live up to hype or expectations rather than being pleased if they serve a useful purpose.

If Garza settles in as a solid mid-rotation starter, that would make him a worthwhile addition to the staff. He need not be a regular all-star. That is my point about Sonnanstine. I do not think he will be a frontline starter; I think it less likely than I do Garza as a matter of fact. But I think he may be useful and appreciate that.

As for winning, that is largely out of his control. All he can do is pitch well enough for the team to win; he cannot actually win.

would you rather have delmon back?

i live in MN and i have hit just as many HR as he has and the rays need pitching right now more than a bat and garza has really only had 2 bad starts so i think that the rays have won that trade so far.

by RaysOfHope on May 18, 2008 8:44 PM EDT   0 recs

C'mon R.J.

Why the hard on for Garza? And I find it funny you never admit your faults or if your wrong even if you are. That’s why this is a blog. Everyone has their own opinion. You have yours and I have mine. Consider it a difference in opinion. If I wanted to log onto R.J.’s opionated blog then I would. It’s a difference of opinion and let’s leave it at that.

by Rays Rule on May 18, 2008 9:03 PM EDT   0 recs

I've never admitted I was wrong?

Seriously?

Things I’ve admitted I was wrong about, over and over again:
- Jae Seo breaking out
- Shawn Camp having a good year
- Brian Stokes being a fine reliever
- James Shields needing to move to the pen
- Eijah Dukes outhitting Delmon Young
- Seth McClung would work out as a reliever.

Should I continue or would you rather have some of the site vets back me up here?

Thought of a few more:

- Fernando Cabrera/ Jay Witasick would make our pen better.
- Rocco isn’t injury prone
- Chad Orvella regaining form.

Opinions

really do not matter. Arguments do. Rationales do. Relevant data does.

Actually, being right or wrong does not matter. The reality is far too complicated to pare it down to right/wrong. What matter is why someone thinks a particular way.

Nobody is arguing that Garza has been satisfactory so far. He hasn’t, and further, the way he has been unsatisfying is disturbing. But some of us have reasons to consider the evidence that he is going to fail still very weak and any projections along those lines premature.

Frankly, I don’t think anyone should care one whit about my opinions. I do think each of us should critique the reasoning and evidence presented. For myself, I do not think I am insulting you-or R.J-if I say I do not give a damn what either of you think, only why you think it. (Actually that is not entirely true as after someone has demonstrated clear thinking before I do take their opinions seriously even before reading the entire argument. But it is still the argument that matters.)

What is the point of a blog-or any site-if it is simply people hurling opinions at each other?

by bobr on May 18, 2008 10:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The moral of the story is that Matt Garza is not pitching like a #3

At least not this week. God willing he will turn it around, but he has to prove that he can play on a more consistent basis. Were all Rays fans here, just some have fun and relax. Don’t get your panties in a bunch

by Rays Rule on May 18, 2008 9:12 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm not arguing that.

However Sonny has the BEST numbers outside of Shields in our rotation.
