It’s official: Hammel to bullpen

Marc Lancaster wrote: The Rays made the only really logical move available to them to clear a rotation spot for Scott Kazmir, telling Jason Hammel today he is headed to the bullpen.

"I’m disappointed," said Hammel, "but it’s my job to help the team, and if this is the right move for the team I’ll gladly do it."

Maddon said this isn’t a situation where the other starters need to worry about looking over their shoulders and wondering if a couple of bad starts might get them bumped out of the rotation in favor of Hammel. This is the way the Rays are going, and Hammel probably won’t get a chance to move back into the rotation unless someone gets hurt or completely goes in the tank.

"I’m happy to still be a part of the team—that’s the way I look at it," said Hammel. "I wasn’t ever really afraid of the move, but I saw it coming."

In addition to moving Hammel, The Rays have placed Gary Glover on the 15 day DL retroactive to April 26 and recalled Justin Ruggiano from AAA Durham to shore up the outfield depth while BJ Upton is ailing. Ruggiano is expected to be optioned after Saturday's game to make room for Scott Kazmir.

Also, Al Reyes apparently needs another MRI on his right shoulder and the Rays aren't expecting him back anytime soon. So it appears that Kurt Brikins' reign in the bullpen will last a little longer.

Oh God.

I really hope he’s better in the bullpen. This kind of drops my heart, because Hammel in short spurts is either going to be amazing or too disgusting for young children to see.

I’m torn between whether E-Jax or Hammel should be the 5th starter. I don’t disagree with the move. But I also feel he should be given a chance to take the role back if/when E-Jax’s ERA regresses toward his peripherals.

The biggest problem I have with Hammel is the k/9 and bb/9 numbers, neither of which are good. They started off fine, but got pretty poor once we had a larger sample set.

I don’t want to mess with a good thing, but JP Howell is putting up fantastic numbers in the pen. 8.1/3.5 k9/bb9 so far, and a whip of 1.20. I wouldn’t mind seeing him get some spot starts, to see if there is some hope there.

If there is one thing we don’t need it is starters. Hammel and Howell should stay in the pen or end up as trade bait. Price will be up at the end of the year, or next year. Then we have to move EJax.

People just can't stand J.P. Howell in the bullpen being successful

I like J.P. in the pen

He has done well. He seems to enjoy it also so if he will stay there I say the Rays should keep him.

did anyone know Glover was hurt???

by davidsmarch on May 2, 2008 7:55 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm guessing

He probably could have pitched this weekend, but with Upton getting hurt and Hammel moving to the pen they could afford to put him on the DL and call up Ruggs. It makes sense the way they did it.

What about Reyes?

He’ll be do to come back here soon. Who gets sent down? Also, I don;t like this idea of a revolving 25 man roster. I mean, injuries are one thing but jeez! We will never see the playoffs if we don’t stop the madness!

OK, so Reyes won't be back for awhile cause he's getting a MRI

Still hurts to see the amount of transactions we’ve gone through the first MONTH of the season

Helps to see the end results though.
