Longjohnstadium

Protect our Wallets and Waterfront has a mighty powerful imagination. They now believe that projectors will be used on the rain tarp when it is deployed to project advertisements for all the city to see. They are using this as another ploy to sway the hearts of the city against the ballpark.

They also have a picture of what a naming scheme on the ballpark would look like.

This is truly absurd

This contention is nothing more than speculative fear-mongering not grounded in any factual basis. First of all, it’s a city-owned ballpark. The team doesn’t have exclusive license to do whatever it wants within the confines of the stadium, and even if it did own the ballpark, I’m assuming such advertising would be a flagrant violation of sign laws in St. Pete.

Secondly, the Rays have to play in this stadium, and I think that’s what opponents miss in the entire process. There are legitimate objections to the stadium proposal, but the team stands in no way to benefit from a stadium with parking or comfort issues. If the team is going to make a $150 million investment in the stadium, plus any additional rent paid, and if they’re going to commit to playing 30 years there, it doesn’t make sense for them to push a plan fraught with unworkable elements. That applies to this specifically too. As an organization that has striven to cultivate a professional image over the last two years, a move like this wouldn’t be in keeping with that goal. They’ve very much tried to clean things up at Tropicana Field, and tried to present advertising in a more tasteful manner. I don’t know why they’d abandon that initiative in moving to a new stadium.

Really, this is worthy of discussion more because it exhibits the ludicrous nature of some of POWW’s arguments. There is just a never ending stream of distortions, such as this, that attempt to pander to some segment or another of the city population. This particular point is nothing more than populist posturing by POWW to try and tap into anti-corporate fervor.

I find it highly unlikely that Yum Brands would be interested in the naming rights anyway.

Plus, wouldn’t it smell funky under a tarp that big? I’ve never come across a good smelling tarp.

I used the term to best describe the "retractable roof"

I don’t think it’s actually going to be made of tarpaulin.

It looks like a giant sail.

I’m not up to speed on the ball park issues, but is something like the roof in Seattle too expensive?

Not enough room for a retractable roof.

Stadium

What if the Rays hadn’t been so bad for the last 10 years? Would folks still be so opposed to the idea of a new stadium.

The more I think about it this seems like a “logical” next step for these stadium haters. They can’t argue the Trop is sufficient and they can’t argue a new stadium will cost taxpayers money. The next step is to say the new stadium will do more harm then good…ie the need to fill in that small portion of the bay and advertisements hanging from the sail de-beautifying downtown and the waterfront.

The Rays next arguement should be constructing this staduim will bring jobs to the tampa bay area in a tough economic time. Then ask the city/county commissioners if they are against jobs. The Rays won’t be this direct but I’m sure they’ve thought about that angle as well.

They're working on that argument

Just read that...

It’s a good argument to make. Obviously, the Rays are being as forceful as they could be but I hope the positive arguments gain more traction then the negative argument do…

Please Vote Yes

The leaders of the POWW have already stated that they will go to any length to defeat the waterfront stadium proposal, including flagrantly contorting and misstating the facts. What may be worse is how gullible many people are and accept their representations as truth. I am amazed when speaking to fellow season ticket holders how many are misinformed about the stadium proposal; one even argued that the sails would not cover the playing field and outfield seating areas.

Certainly there are legitimate concerns and issues that should be openly debated. It is also to be expected that what ever side one advocates there is going to be ‘spin’ that needs to be discerned, but to boldly lie to advance one’s agenda is deceitful. When did Karl Rove move to St Pete anyway?

I don’t live in St Pete so I don’t get to vote. Living in Tampa, it is my belief that IF THE VOTE DOES NOT GO THROUGH attending the Rays will become much easier for me as they will relocate over here. Don’t tell me about an ironclad lease that will hold them at the Trop until 2028. The real tooth in the current contract is the debt on the stadium. If the Rays were to move they would be responsible to pay it off. Currently it is a deterrent. Don’t look now, but the debt will be retired by 2016 at which time there will be nothing of any great financial obligation to hold the Rays to the lease. Bye-bye St Pete. How sad, after having to spend 10 years of futility you’ll get to enjoy 9 years of competitiveness only to see them walk away just as they reach their prime. That will happen if you vote it down. Dust off those green benches, St. Pete and let’s meet up at Webbs’ for an RC and moon pie because your future will be a return to your past. That’s if the vote does not go through.

While I live in Tampa I want the deal to go through. The site is perfect: replete with a profound baseball history like no other in the state and nestled in a dynamic entertainment district. The waterfront location and stadium design will create such an aesthetic architectural affair that it will be a destination spot for folks from around the state and beyond. Well beyond.

Coupled with the residential/commercial influx generated by real community and economic development at the site of the current stadium, St Petersburg has a tremendous opportunity to prosper through planned growth. So to the residents of St Pete I say; gather the facts, sift through the spin, don’t vote out of the fear of our current economic situation and see what is truly possible and vote as you see best for yourselves personally and your community’s future.

Paranoia everywhere...

I live in the Shore Acres area of St. Pete and I attended a neighborhood civic meeting about the stadium issue last night. Representatives from the two main citizens groups spoke, POWW and Fansfortheballpark. The POWW guy was a dynamic speaker but essentailly full of #x%x*. His main argument was that we should not trust the Rays ownership to do the right thing. He also mentioned that the Rays should pay for it themselves, and then proceeded to roll out all of the big contracts they are giving their players. At the end I stood up and said to the POWW guy that the big contracts to the young players are a reason we SHOULD trust the new ownership, he stammered but then went into attendence and the fact that this is not a baseball town. Total crap, in my opinion.
What I really got out of the meeting is that most people over 60 are 100% against it, and most people under 40 are for it.
Side note: It is now common knowledge that people have been stealing pro-stadium blue signs in my neighborhood and in some instances replacing them with the anti-stadium POWW signs. Showing their true colors…
Anyway, I’m voting YES for the stadium, if it even comes to a vote.

I hope the stadium goes through because the Rays aren’t going to be playing at the Trop in 2026.

I hope the tarp doesn’t turn into an advertisement hub, that looks awful.

There's no chance of huge ads like that going on the sail.

If they wanted to do something like that they would have already done it to the roof of the Trop.

Even if they were going to post ads on the stadium

Who really cares? So long as they don’t start putting ads on the uniforms and the bases, I could certainly care less how they choose to generate revenue.

Build the park!

If St. Petersburg won’t build the ballpark, the Rays will move somewhere else. Tampa, Portland, Charlotte, Orlando, even Indianapolis or Columbus.

by billso on May 26, 2008 10:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The only two possible options in that group are Tampa and Portland

The rest are unqualified to be major league cities, and in any case, relocation outside the bay area is not going to happen for quite some time, if at all.

I wish the leaders in this area would remove their heads from their asses and adopt a transit system just as good.

I myself could see light rail systems for Pinellas and Hillsborough

With a heavy rail link between them, or the proposed High Speed Rail from St. Pete to Orlando.

Perhaps build one hub at Dale Mabry and I-275, and the other at the Trop site when they build the new ballpark?

Don't bet on it

If Sternberg is able to spend $150m on the new ballpark, then he is able to spend $64m to break the lease on the Trop.
