Not that we’ll be able to watch it.
Interesting, Eveland and Sonny have identical WHIPs. I smell a regression to the mean for the A’s pitcher.

I’ve had the same argument all year. Half the games are on FSN which is not carried by Bright House in Orlando. Half the games are at home which is blacked out on MLB.tv. I watch religiously and end up having to Gameday it (which I am starting to lean more towards as the pitch cam is super awesome, and they now have video clips minutes after RT), but obviously watching it live is where it’s at. I get out of work at 5 so I could not possibly get to the Trop for first pitch. I am sure this is the plight of 1,000s of other people in Orlando. We need solutions from the clowns in charge.

DirecTV is your friend
Barring that, you should be able to get Comcast, or you’ll have to wait for AT&T U-verse.

My guess is that because their TV deal is worth much more than thier internet deal
so making the games available over the net undermines their bottom line.
STILL, you think on days where they games are not available in the home market it would make sense for them to unblock the games, they could make even more money is people are buying cable and mlbtv.

The stated policy
Is to protect advertising revenue for the local carriers, and to encourage fans to come to the park. But on away games when there is no home TV provider, it makes zero sense…they have been very slow in reviewing their policy

by GomesSweetGomes on May 21, 2008 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Based on the level of security
(or lack thereof) I think the policy is much more about MLB saving face should a local TV station sue them for lost revenue streams.
by GomesSweetGomes on May 21, 2008 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Also
While there is no doubt MLB makes more revenue off of their TV deals than the internet, they probably make a much higher profit margin over the internet. They are selling a product that a third party has actually paid them for the right to create, and all they pay for is the bandwidth.

I’ve been watching it all season. The highest I’ve ever seen it register someone as throwing is 92, even when some of you guys are talking about Jackson and others hitting the high 90s. I swear it must be off. And even if someone is throwing soft, the lowest I’ve ever seen it go is 82 or so. It has a very odd range.

pena strikes out too much and doesn’t get enough xbh to drive in runs. also he strikes out (or ends innings) way too much so evan is up with nobody on way too much. we would be better off giving upton and longoria the chance to drive in some runs.

Sure. But Pena is not someone you can rely on consistently for RBIs. Crawford, Upton and Longoria are our ‘consistent’ RBI men. Pena strikes out too much and he simply doesn’t get enough extra base hits. Also Pena ends innings too much and it kills Longoria. Heck I’d be alright flip flopping Pena and Longoria. Although that may be too much too soon for Evan. Also doing an Aki/Barty/CC/Upton/Longoria/Pena approach would allow Carl to hit with more men on base.
Do we REALLY want Carl up with more men on?
His approach isn’t exactly what I want with 2 on nobody out.

i’d say i’d be much more confident with carl up than pena in that situation. pena is the absolute worst person to have up with men on and less than 2 outs.
I disagree.
I’ll take Carlos going to 2-2 and King rather than Carl first pitch hacking into a double play.

I think Carl, Upton, and Longoria have a extremely higher chance of knocking in a guy on 3rd with 1 out, moving a runner over if need be, driving in a run on 2nd with 2 out, and driving in a run from 1st than Pena. Penas only real RBIs are off home runs. We need guys that are able to sac fly, hit singles, and XBH on a much more consistent basis to drive in men. Pena just doesn’t do it. It is home run or bust.
Singles and SF maybe...
XBH:
Carl: 11
Carlos: 12
Most are homers, sure, but that’s not the point.

Most of our RF options have been above average (until Gomes now)
And apparently Ruggiano has character flaws.

Na.
But you don’t always need one, as long as your team isn’t the Giants/nursing home age you can go with platoons and short term fixes.

Does errors or hit by pitch help your OBP?
I know it doesn’t affect average at all.

Interesting that it is calculated
I would guess that there are only a handful of MLB batters who have a significant effect on how many times they are hit…its interesting that its considered a plus…though I cans ee the argument both ways.

Ok I was 1/2 wrong
errors lower OBP, HBP raises it
by GomesSweetGomes on May 21, 2008 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions
And naturally Es would lower it
Since it doesn’t count as a hit, but still holds an AB value.
So if a player goes 1-3 with a HBP and reached on an error he’s reached base three times, but only two count really “count” as reaching base.

Hellickson has awhile to go. Price will take Sonnys spot. Then Davis and McGee may or may not take Garza/Jackson. The FO will have to look at their projections and do some cost/benefit analysis and determine who to trade. Of course there is always the ‘pen option.
Davis will get a rotation spot before anyone else.

Garza…maybe. Jackson I think you are way off base. Jackson has infinitely better stuff than Sonny. And he is just beginning to harness it enough to put up good numbers.
I’d always rather have a guy that walks a few, but doesn’t get hit hard than a guy that walks none but pitches virtual BP.

FIP is one stat i don’t buy into. we have seen sonny pitch, it’s not his fielders that are balooning his ERA, it’s his crappy arm that shouldn’t be in the rotation. jackson has the same fielders….

FIP
Only problem I have with FIP is it seems to underestimate pitchers that induce non-detrimental contact. Granted any ball put in play could hurt, but a guy like brandoin webb, who is arguably one of the best pitchers right now, will consistently have a higher FIPs than his ERA.
Oakland is a very good team.
I’m shocked we were able to pull two out against Smith/Blanton in Oakland. Tip your hats, let Sonny take a few more lumps today and move on to Baltimore.
