Los and Longlorious

Bob Rittner essentially asked where our offense had went earlier, the 3-4-5 hitters showed us they were present tonight:
B.J.: 3-3, 2 RBI, BB
Pena 3-3, 3 RBI, 3B, 2B, BB
Longoria 2-3, 2 HR, 6 RBI
Great offensive night. I don't have much else to say.

Pena
Your post on Pena is looking good right now.
Every time I attend a game, I hope to have an “easy” one like this instead of a nail biter. Years ago someone commented (I do not remember the source) in describing the 1936-39 Yankees that in most games NY would score 8 runs in the first inning and then slowly pull away.
It’s good to see that kind of game from the Rays-although I was not there tonight. There is evidence that indicates successful teams are not the ones that win a lot of close games but those that win lots of blowouts. In fact, there seems no correlation between winning close games and being successful, despite the standard mythology.

I think Pena ripped a leg off of a bear tonight.

Looks like the offensive explosion occurred at the right time for Jackson and deservedly so after some of his tough luck no-decisions; based on the box score (didn’t see the game), he had one of his lesser outings this year.

Can decisions regress/progress to the mean? If so, this would be an example.

No, he definitely pitched poorly
Even after the 5 run first he still worked 7 three ball counts and walked a few guys. I like guys treating every batter as important, but I personally believe that going after batters is the way to go when pitching with the lead. To his credit he settled down after the Scott home run. But whatever, ill gladly take the win.

If that’s aimed at me I was making a joke.

Jackson's BABIP tonight was .187 and yet he allowed 3 runs.

Glover
Is it possible that this outing makes the decision to drop Glover more likely? There certainly are options available and needing relief with an 8 run lead in the 8th is too reminiscent of last year’s bullpen. He is currently the only truly incendiary reliever on the staff. Even Hammel is less scary, and every other reliever either has been quite good or at least serves some purpose beyond being a sacrificial lamb.

I was thinking the same thing during the game
If he can’t command the strike zone when given an 8 run lead, when can we expect him to?

Had "went"???
Wow! Who taught you the English language? Try using “gone” rather than “went.”

A Caller on 1250 earlier
Claimed that BJ and Maddon got in a scuffle after BJ misplayed a fly ball to center, allowing a runner to tag from second, advance to third, and eventually score.
According to the caller, Maddon gave BJ some words after the inning, after which BJ charged towards Maddon. They could neither confirm nor deny whether it happened. Maybe its a good thing this game wasn’t on TV.
Anyone else see or hear about this?

It was a poor effort
I watched the O’s feed on MLB.tv It was obvious that if Upton gives a real effort there is no way Payton tags (I messed up earlier…Payton actually advanced from second to third)

exactly...
he was lazy for that play. It was a shame cuz he eventually scored.

I dunno.
Everyone thought Kazmir hated Hickey/Maddon after pouting early last season.

The game was fantastic
We got there about 40 minutes before the game started and the parking lots were full and we had to park at a local business and walk. The game was extremely entertaining and everyone in our section was up cheering for Carlos everytime he was up just a HR short of the cycle, and both of Evan’s HR’s were definite no-doubt-abouters, especially the one that went like 460 feet. I really hope all the guys get really locked in. It really seemed to start tonight in the 2nd when we had 6 straight hits with 2 outs. That was fantastic.
On the whole BJ-Maddon dispute…I really hope it isn’t true, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it is. While he is a superb athlete and has great potential as a player, he definitely seems to be full of himself and have $ symbols for eyes. I’ll enjoy him while he’s here, but I will be pleasantly surprised if we are able to get him re-upped.

460 feet?
What game were you watching. Otherwise, I agree.
by GomesSweetGomes on May 25, 2008 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i heard the estimate was 450. it hit the party deck
by matthan on May 25, 2008 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was in left
And didn’t think it hit the party deck, or even came close. But even if it did, 460 feet is generous. I know that last July 30th, Gomes hit one off the face of the party deck to deeper part of the park (Between Sections 143 and 145 as opposed to between 139 and 141), and it only went 436 feet. Here is the path it took, as well as the video:
http://www.hittrackeronline.com/hrdetail.php?id=2007_3075
http://tampabay.rays.mlb.com/multimedia/tp_archive.jsp?c_id=tb&ym=200707
I’d say if it hit off the party deck (and sadly I can’t tell from the MLBtv video…No effin clue why ESPN only showed the Pena Double and Second Longo HR on BBTN) it traveled 410’.
And yes, I have now revealed myself as a ridiculous nerd on the topic of HR flight travel. But there is a reason I’ve gone home with 2 BJ Upton Homeruns in the past 2 years, and its name is HRTracker.

$$$
Why shouldn’t he have his eye on the $$$. I sure would. If you had the opportunity to sign a deal for, lets say 50 million guaranteed or wait a few years, make about 20 during those 5 or 6 years, then sign a deal for 100+ would you at least consider it? It’s not selfish, it’s smart. It has it’s risks, but the reward is huge.

I really do hope he says, but think he will follow the dollars. In the same situation, I’d do likewise. And I think he, and most MLB players are full of themselves. I think you kind of have to be (at least to some extent) to succeed at that level.

Jackson
Jackson didn’t have his best stuff, but ill take it considering he had just 2 wins even though he 3 starts of 0 ER and 3 starts of 1 ER and all of them over 7 innings. He’s been the tough luck pitcher of the year so far. If he had any decent run support he would have a shot at being an all star.
by matthan on May 25, 2008 1:49 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agree
Even though he was bad… he only gave up 3 runs. Which last year today he would have given up 5-7 runs up. He got out of a couple jams that stopped the damage from getting out of hand.

Also
The Orioles ran out the most inept starting lineup I’ve seen this year. Both Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis had the day off, so you had Freddie Bynum leading off? Kevin Millar as your cleanup hitter? Awful, just awful.

Stuff = command?
And when the hell will Jackson ever have his best control if not against a crappy lineup?
