I watch how they're doing on the scoreboard and once in a while I glance at the attendance figures, hoping that attendance picks up over there the way it should. They've got a good product now and there's no reason why people can't go out there and support it. Let's get the people from Tampa getting over there because it's a young, exciting club.

Yep, I was in DC today and it was absolutely perfect weather but the Nationals had their smallest crowd of the Memorial Day weekend.
At any rate, if this attendance nonsense starts to overshadow this outstanding start and the performance of the ballclub, I’ll throw RJ’s chair through a wall.

whyw ould Lou be hated in this town?

attendance
It was really bad tonight. They may have said 12K, but it was more in the neighborhood of 8K in terms of number of people in the seats. I think attendance will definitely pick up once Hills Co schools finish up. Im not sure if Pinellas City schools ares till running, but if they are that would only compound the problem.
Of course if the stadium was in Tampa they would be drawing 25K a game, but thats another story altogether.
They are
Florida mandated all districts to start school no earlier than two weeks before Labor Day this year. Orange Co. for one took the earliest possible start, and lets out on June 6. At the very least, districts still have a week-and-a-half to go.

I have an idea
How about some of you stop blogging during games and drive to Tropicanna. Seriously – the people on here should be the die hard fans that rarely missing a game, but yet sometimes I see over 500 comments in the game section. No more excuses.
Yeah, I'll fly down...
Which I did for the opening series, and drove the three hours in traffic to go see games in Baltimore. I don’t think you need to concern yourselves with the people on here. Its the Johnny Come-lately fans that will show up in August that need to start coming out already.
Um
I went to all three games this weekend. I live in Clearwater, I don’t drive, and I’m a 16 year old without a job in high school. Going to weeknight games is, for the most part, not feasable for me. I try to go when I can. But I think it is very presumptuous of you to assert that it is the responsibility of everyone here to go to every game. Those who watch on TV are no worse fans than are those who attend games. It isn’t the people here you need to be concerned about.

Excuses are Likes A-holes...
How are fans that watch on TV no worse fans than those who attend games? Are you telling me that watching on TV has an equal impact on the economic viability of this team. I watch all of you talk about players that will take this team to the next level and then later that night, during a home game, write about the game. Why are you not there? It is not for the people that have jobs at night, can’t drive, or do not live abroad. These fans know who they are. Pick your ass up off the couch and go support this team. I am so sick of hearing the multiple excuses from Tampa Bay residents for the reasons they are not going. I look forward to hearing future posts on excuses to you wife/boss/school/parents on how to get out of the house to see more games. GO RAYS!
This team's economic viability is not going to be won or lost on die-hard fans
It is going to be the greater area populace as a whole. Sure, if you live in the area it would be nice for you to drop into the Trop at least a few times a year, but just because you don’t attend the games regularly doesn’t mean you are less of a fan. Investing three hours in watching the team on TV, informing yourself of players and events related to the team, and discussing the team online is still a great investment of your time. It may not have a price tag attached, but there is value to that.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on May 27, 2008 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I think you are so wrong it is incredible. The economic viability begins with the die hard fans. If you as a "die hard fan" do not go to the game, how do you expect a casual fan to go. If people start to hear about attendance numbers. Patrick, I am not trying to single you out, but when you get defensive about your attendance you force that. Instead of defending your lack of attendance, why don’t you try to encourage others to attend games. I would not go as far to call a 16 year old that takes the time to create a website a bad fan, but I feel I well within my rights to question why you would not want to encourage every person that visits this site to attend games. It is impossible to argue that trying to encourage attendance is not beneficial to the team. So, I ask you not why you do not go to more games, but rather why would you not encourage visitors to your site to attend more games.
Also, I would not argue that there is value in your time and effort put towards the Rays, however unless people do not go to the park, LeftRight is correct in saying that we might have to fly to Vegas to check Evan out in the future. Any of you that do not believe that this team needs more attendance to stay in Tampa Bay are incredibly naive. These owners are not local and have valued this team as an investment, they have no reason to stay here unless it makes economic sense
These owners are not local
Most owners aren’t.

Like I said
It would be nice for everyone in the area to pop into the Trop at least a couple times a year, and I encourage everyone to go to as many games as they can. But I recognize that for some people, that is not possible. Going to the ballpark isn’t cheap, it requires an investment of both money and lots and lots of time, and I can understand why plenty of people prefer to the ease and comfort of their homes. That doesn’t make them bad fans. Obviously the attendance needs to pick up for this franchise to remain viable in Tampa Bay, and I believe it will, but I don’t think the people here are the problem.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on May 27, 2008 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions
If you dont live in this area
then I understand not attending and I appreciate the help with TV ratings, but I disagree with being a diehard fan, living somewhat close, and not attending. I dont think it makes you less of a fan, I just dont understand why people dont want to get out to the ballpark and cheer on our team – live. And the 16 and no job excuse -cmon – I doubt I am the only one that gets the annoying pop up adds when I come to the site. Use that money and take a bus. The diehard fans have to be the ones who force their friends, family, co-workers (Johnny-Come lately) to get out there. If people on here that love this team cant make it – how the hell will team survive here? And if you think the attendance talk is annoying, then think about Longoria playing every night in Vegas. Something has to be done, and I personally think it has to start on sites like this.
We don't get ad money.

Um
I don’t get that ad money. That is network-generated and they get all of that. Believe me, if I were rolling in cash I’d take a taxi to games. Public transportation is not viable in Pinellas County. Even if I did take the 150 minute bus ride to the Trop from my door, there’s still the matter of getting back after the game when bus service up to Clearwater terminates. It’s simply not feasible.
I do go to games as much as I can. I’ve been to 10 games so far this year; that’s far more than a lot of people. Believe me, if I were a 9 to 5 guy with a car, I’d have season tickets. The fact of the matter is, I’m not at that stage of my life. I don’t have the option to go every day.

“Longoria playing every night in Vegas”
First, attendance should begin to pick up if the team is still in contention after the All-Star break. At this moment, all this hysteria is a complete waste of time. As for this relocation scarecrow, Las Vegas in particular: only if MLB expands and the owners of the franchise convince the public to build them a stadium… all of which is virtually assured not to happen during Longoria’s major league career.
Meanwhile..
Tampa/St. Pete metro area: 2.7 million (including the Sarasota metro area: 3.4 million)
Las Vegas metro area: 1.7 million (and hit hard by housing collapse)
Nobody is moving to Vegas (or any other location) any time soon.
Enjoy the winning!
Longlorious.
The clearest indication that this team won’t move is that Jeff Loria couldn’t move, and he’s about as business strict as it comes and focused only on profit. Stu doesn’t want to move or sell.

BJ unhappy w/ RJ
I’m a diehard, been attending 25+games annually since moving back six years ago. The concept of a fan-based blog site to express opinions is as democratic as it gets and I truly respect and appreciate you for providing this forum to debate. RJ and Kennedy, my objection is that you spend all this time towards creating this site. You then don’t make the sacrifice of ur time and resources to attend the games, nor do you implore others to do so. Ur creating excuses for them, as site directors and obvious diehard fans, u should be creating a sense of urgency amongst the best Rays fans in the area that LOW ATTENDANCE=TEAM GONE. If ppl are on this site they are rabid fans, these are the ppl ur reaching and the most culpable for our attendance. My point, even if you don’t believe it- stay positive about attending games rather than just creating more dumb excuses; the ppl that actually read this blog are rare fans and need to understand the importance of attending NOW for future gains.

I can’t tell people how to live their lives. People need to do what’s best for their families and themselves first. If they have the means to go to a ton of games then by all means please do, but if you can’t it doesn’t make you less of a fan.

I do wish more people would attend games
I don’t think there is anyone here who is not disappointed at the attendance levels the team has been at for the last ten years. Obviously this is a problem that has deep roots and isn’t going to change overnight, but when it does I think similarly that the inertia of good attendance and the area getting behind the team will result in a more concrete base of support going forward.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on May 27, 2008 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I think you're incorrect
I attend 25+ games every year. Like I said, I’ve already been to ten. I was at something like 35 in 2006. I go when I can. I’m not creating excuses for people not to attend. Obviously the area as a whole needs to get behind the special product on the field. The people already here have clearly devoted considerable resources toward supporting the team. I’m not concerned about them. They clearly aren’t attending due to lack of will. There are many factors at play here, and it’s going to take far more than the readers of this site to make for a meaningful boost in attendance.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on May 27, 2008 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions
well that just blows
you guys do a good job and deserve compensation, because this thing doesnt move without you. But if you think this team wont move because of poor attendance you are sorely mistaken. At the very least poor attendance will not grant us the ability to make necessary moves, and good attendance starts with die hard fans. And I’m not sure why you brough Loria into this argument – because of him the expos became the Nationals, and because of him the Marlins are getting a new stadium.
I brought him in
To show that he couldn’t even move the Marlins and this was after a longer battle than we’ll have for a new stadium. New place = not moving.

Also
In 1991 the Braves went from 65 wins to 94 and their overall attendance jumped from 12k to 26k. Through May 27th of 1991 their home attendance was roughly 19k per game, ours is 18k per game.

“because of him the expos became the Nationals”
If only it were that simplistic. Just off the top of my head, it also took the failure of multiple ownership groups to secure a new stadium in Montreal, the withdrawal of local media coverage and corporate sponsorship, declining attendance, a literally crumbling and broken stadium, the existence of RFK Stadium as a suitable temporary home, the pre-approval of a new taxpayer funded stadium and MLB’s blessing to get the Expos to DC after years and years of major problems in Montreal. Those conditions don’t exist in either Tampa/St. Pete or a rival market.
Longlorious.
So you think Sternberg is simply posturing with his take or leave it approach? Ur crazy. The Marlins didn’t start drawing until late July during their last Series run, so we still have time. The next month will be telling, 29K on Sat was a start.
