Rays Mock Draft: 1st Overall Pick (Who?)

Hello again,

The mock draft on minor league ball is tomorrow and I just wanted to add a poll on who YOU think we should take in the first round, seeing as the one actually at minor league ball is in a deadlock. Make sure if you choose "other" that you express who in the comment section.

ALSO, please post guys that you think would be good to take in the "later" (really only a five round mock draft) rounds of the draft.

Thank you for your participation.

PS: I will post the mock draft results after it happens maybe tomorrow night, or Sunday. Or Monday: I have a busy weekend.

Poll

Yeah

The top pick is really hard to make; I like all of those guys in some respect or another. I’ll just say Alvarez as a Vandy homer.

Hey guys...

Rangers fan and FSU student here.

Just stopped over to see what the opinion was on taking Buster Posey number 1. I went to the FSU – Bucknell game tonight, and he look as good as the hype would indicate. Haven’t had the chance to watch the team as much as I would have liked this year, with school, MLB and other distractions, but he’s got a lot of tools.

Alvarez

He is a 5 tool player. Look at the last Catcher drafted in the first round that was a star. It just doesn’t happen. Catchers are to unpredictable. Get the sure thing with the 1st pick. We are on a roll and we need to stay on it, don’t screw up this pick.

You can’t use a fallacy like that. Simply put you can go through each position and points out cases of booms and busts, for every Joe Mauer there’s an Eric Munson, for every Evan Longoria there’s a Sean Burroughs.

Trust the scouting department, they're the same guys who wanted Longoria when the consensus pick was Andrew Miller.

Joe Mauer? Jeff Clement? Jarrod Saltalamaccia?

It happens. Catchers are rarely taken in the first round, but there are successes.

There’s never a sure thing in baseball drafts.

Pitchers are probably the riskiest as evidenced by numerous first round flameouts from 2001-05. Just a few high-profile examples who either never made it to the majors or have only been given courtesy callups: Kenny Baugh, Kyle Sleeth, Clint Everts, Josh Karp, Colt Griffin, Bobby Brownlie, Bryan Bullington (18 IP, #1 pick), John Van Benschoten, Jeff Allison, on and on and on.

But it happens at every position:
INF: Jake Gautreau, Matt Bush, Drew Meyer (18 ml ab’s), Brian Snyder
OF: John Ford Griffin, Ryan Harvey, Chris Lubanski, Brad Snyder

Longlorious.

I am still on the fence with who to take: Alvarez or Beckham.

Of those two go with Alvarez.

I’m going to go with Alvarez. Draft starts in about 5 mins on minor league ball.

After Porcello

MLB is hoping that some team has the stones to do that.

RJ is not an elitist douchebag who hates scouting
