A Favorite Devil Ray/Ray?
What's up everyone in the Devil Rays Blog world. Tough loss today, but we'll get through it. Percival is still the man and he'll have the bullpen in good order next time around. I was thinking to get our minds off this loss, I could post a discussion question and get all of your thoughts on it. Who is the best Devil Ray/Ray (whatever you want to call them, still the most underrated team ever) of all time.
For me growing up all over the United States, but being from Tampa, I was unable to be at the Trop to see alot of games. I was however in Baltimore and New York quite abit and I must say I thought from a personality and way he carried himself on and off the field Tino Martinez was great. Also not enough can be said of Fred McGriff, Aubrey Huff, or Carl Crawford.
Anyways now that I got the ball rolling let me hear from you Rays fans... Peace.

Tough Question
Carl Crawford purley on the reasons that the guy is worth the price of admission. I have seen him make play after play whether it be in front of 8,000 fans or a sell-out crowd. Carl has chimed in with the clutch hit, but also with the clutch play. Say what you will with out Carl the Devil Rays loose about 10-15 more games.

Probs Carl...
The 2003 walk-off in the season opener to shut up all the annoying Sawx fans is one of my favorite plays ever. I just remember this annoying Mass Hole with a Manny jersey on that didn’t shut up the whole game, and then after Crawford hit that shot we all razzed him so hard and he got so pissed. The best was the fact that they had yet to win the series in 85 years so he didn’t have a whole lot to say back.
But Longo is catchin up fast. I love watching him play the game.

Elijah Dukes
He brought us media attention when no one talked about the Rays. He hit 10 home runs in only 52 games, AS A ROOKIE! He had a cannon for an arm, and he knew how to draw a walk. It’s a shame he was traded away before he blossomed into full super-star status.

Considering our current outfield situation
He would have been perfect if we hadn’t given in to punditry and hastily traded him.

he's a guy that desperately needed a change in scenery...
he needed to get out of Tampa and the element that surrounded him here. He has a terrible attitude and a terrible demeanor. He isn’t even playing for the Nationals so why would he play here? He wasn’t going to be accepted back at Durhum, so what would have done with him?

He needed to be more involved in the Club.
I would think that perhaps giving him more responsabilities, and getting him to become a clubhouse leader would do wonders for his self-esteem. Making sure he plays everyday, have more group outings with the other outfielders (Crawford, Upton), maybe having him work with kids at a Rays baseball camp or something. I think he was overly disused here, and so he couldn’t invest the emotion in the team that he might have liked to.

no amount of inlusion would have fixed what troubled him...
this guy got kicked out of one high school for hitting a teacher and suspended from another. He text message a picture of a gun to the estranged mother of his children. He shouldn’t be around children, let alone mentor them. You can’t tell me that including him in trips to the movies or whatever would have gotten this headcase to straighten out. The only chance he had was to change locations and for the new team to hire a baysitter, which the Nats have done.
He also hit like .182 in those same 50 games…

High school is tough for anyone, and he grew up under bad circumstances.
The text message thing was a misunderstanding, I think he probably accidentally took the picture, or sent it to the wrong person (I’ve accidentally texted to the wrong person before).
I think including him in more team events would have provided him with the family he never had, and would have gone a long way to defining his club-house leadership role.
Batting Average isn’t an important metric. He had a .318 OBP, which isn’t too bad for the first 52 games in his career.

If you're basing it on overall contribution
It’s hard to give it anybody but Crawford. Now if you’re going for who is/was best at their peak there are many other possibilities.

This is really tough
I would have to choose CC. but Kazmir is a close 2nd.
Then there are my favorites because they were not that good but I enjoyed to watch for some reason…... Tomas Perez, Travis Lee, Ruddy Lugo, Miguel Cairo (hey I was young),

Cairo's current OPS is like 0.091.

i just wish he had been here to pie Longoria at least once. That’s no reason to carry the guy though.

I really like him also
but still my fav first baseman of the 90’s was Mark Grace. Crime Dog is second but very close.
