There is no Gabe Gross hate. He just isn’t an answer in RF. Ruggiano at least has the “potential” to possibly be the answer. Gross just doesn’t. There is a reason why the Brewers basically traded him for a bunch of bats. He is a good bench bat and spot start, but not a near everyday starter.

That Gabe has the highest slugging percentage on the team since May 1st? He’s hitting .271/.346/.529 since the beginning of May.
He’s a perfect platoon player and should be used that way. I don’t think he’s a bench guy. He’s a platoon guy and should be in left against righties until he proves otherwise.

Hence the word “near”. You do realize he hasn’t hit higher than .250 since 2006? If you extrapolate the portion of the season he wasn’t with us to the percentage of the games played for the rest of the season it would be his all time high. He has never hit more than 10 home runs in a season. Only hit higher than .251 once, which is really bad considering he has been a platoon player his entire career.
Point being is he is playing way too much and is definitely not a short, medium, long term answer in RF.
Perhaps maybe Ruggiano could do better? He couldn’t be much worse than Gross’ historical numbers.
He should be a defensive replacement and a once every couple weeks spot start.
If he can turn his career around here and become a much better player then that would be great. But he has yet to show that he is anything more than exactly what he was in Toronto and with the Brewers.

My hunch is that Gross just isn’t very good, and his problem isn’t conceding strikes. Where did you get the idea of swinging at first pitches? Oh thats right, you are one of the people that have trouble reading. You do realize that not every first pitch is a meatball down the middle? For all your hate on Edwin Jackson you should realize that people actually throw things called balls.

This I agree with.
average correlates with runs scored at about .6. OBP around .9 and OPS around .95.
Average is far and away the worst way to judge a player, maybe only better than by strikeouts.

Sure if he was Adam Dunn. But he isn’t. You realize that the most he has hit is 9 home runs in a season? Historically you are lucky if Gross hits a home run once every 30 or 40 at bats.

Again, why do we care about history when we are looking out how well someone will be going forward.
BTW, Gross historically has hit a homerun every 31 at bats. This yeah its been every 32.5.
