Gomes/Guzman
I don’t see why Guzman would be a better option. He still does not walk, and while his BA and power is somewhat better this year than in the recent past, it is nothing special. As a matter of fact, Gomes’s minor league numbers at the same level and at the same age were significantly better than Guzman’s are. For that matter, Gomes entire minor league career was better than Guzman’s minor league performance.
What exactly do we expect Guzman to do better than Gomes? Maybe he is a better fielder in the outfield. Maybe he will strike out less. But I doubt he hits for more power, and he certainly will make a lot more outs. Aside from a bit more positional flexibility, which at this point is a very marginal advantage given the Rays’ roster, I do not see him as an upgrade.
