Griffey Jr. & Latin America
Let's start with Jayson Stark's latest column which involved two Rays related tidbits. First up:
Whither Junior, 2009 edition: But if you're looking for a destination Griffey could land in next year, once there are no worries about surrendering prospects or picking up a $16-million contract, here's a club we've started to hear some guesswork about: Tampa Bay.
The Trop is an easy commute from Griffey's home in Orlando. It's a fun team on the rise, with a chance to win. And it's an AL team that could mix in some DH-ing opportunities. So why not?
"If I were them, I think it would be a great move," said one veteran baseball man. "You run him out there with his big smile and his sweet swing, and it's a drawing card. And even if he's slipped, you're putting another left-handed bat in the middle of that lineup. Could be scary."
Let me be the first to say no. I grew up with Junior being one of the, if not the, best players going. I'm sure we all have memories of his highlight reel catches and homeruns, but at the same time his injuries are just as prevalent in my present day evaluation. Acquiring Griffey in free agency would make little sense for the Rays, especially with Barry Bonds sitting as a free agent and Cliff Floyd, who is amazingly younger than Griffey, sitting on the roster. This simply doesn't smell like a Rays move and I'm always timid with ambiguous sources named like "veteran baseball man".
From that same piece.
Rays of hope: Speaking of Tampa Bay, we continue to see no reason to assume the Rays will be coming back toward what they used to know as earth. One scout's review: "Here's the thing. [Evan] Longoria and [B.J.] Upton are guys who can hit good pitching. There are a lot of hitters out there who hit average pitching. But this club, if they can get to the playoffs, can do some damage because they can handle the good pitchers."
If you say so.
We now turn our attention to something a bit different: Latin American amateur free agents, first a run down provided by ESPN including commentary on Michael Inoa, a 16 year old pitcher who apparently could net more than four million dollars from the Oakland Athletics of all organizations.
Inoa (6-foot-7, 210 pounds) is a right-handed hurler with a three-pitch repertoire consisting of a fastball (93 mph), changeup and curve.
"His most attractive asset is the fact that he has a lot of control for such a tall guy, and he knows what to do once he gets on the mound," said Ezequiel Sepulveda, a scout for the L.A. Dodgers in the Dominican Republic. "Inoa is every scout's dream. He has it all."
Amongst other notable international free agents from the Rays-centric Venezuela:
Venezuela: C Jackson Valera, LHP Ismael Guillon, RHP Alvin Mejias, C Oscar Perez, SS Luis Cortes, RHP Jose Perdomo, SS Luis Villogas, RHP Josue Castellanos
Perhaps the team makes a run at one of the players, maybe not. Despite that I do encourage everyone to read over this piece in the new edition of Vanity Fair from Moneyball author Michael Lewis concerning Cuban baseball players. If nothing else it should give some perspective on their journeys.

If we had a chance at Griffey...
I’d say take it. I can’t imagine a world where the Rays would have too many left-handed power hitters. You get those when you can and hold them as long as possible.
Sure he gets injured, but so does Floyd. The two should spell each other well enough to keep themselves healthy late.

pursue griffrey at the trade deadline
griffrey is better suited to be a DH and just think of that lineup with aki,CC,upton, griffrey, pena, longo, rocco, nany, bartlett wow that lineup would be unstoppable and it wouldnt take that much in prospects to get griffrey since he makes so much and his past injuries which i think is over with but that lineup just makes me excited with how many runs that it could pile up!!!

Is that scout related to John Madden?
“These guys can hit good pitching. If you can’t hit good pitching, you don’t have a chance” “BOOM!”

No even iffy on Griffey
If we had a guarantee that Griffey would play 90% of the time, then yes. But there is no guarantee and there are better, younger, and cheaper players that would be more reliable.
Don’t get me wrong. I love the thought of Ken Griffey Jr. playing for my home team of the Rays. But, my image of Griffey is that of him being 25, not a older, slower version of the present.
RJ, can you get off this Bonds kick? Floyd gives us a strong left handed bat with FAR LESS CONTROVERSY. You want fans you keep Floyd, and we can win games. You want protests, get Bonds and let the questions swarm the young Rays.

I'm never getting off the Bonds kick.
The controversy card is far overplayed in my opinion. Find me a winning team with so called “bad chemistry”, it’ll be the first. Oh the media’s going to be around a ton? How many SI, ESPN, Sporting News articles did this team have written about it last year as opposed to this year?
Winning brings attention and creates chemistry.

dont even get me,rj and the rest of us started on bonds
we arent going to drop the bonds thing untell he signs with us or another team or with no one, i totally agree with rj that the controversy thing is so overblown it isnt even funny anymore, i mean look at some of the players in the mitchell report and how they have been treated so the rays should at least reach out to bonds and see if he is atleast interested in us now that we are a winning team and with bonds we could be a world series contender and everyone knows that bonds wants to play to get a ring, and im not saying that we cant make it without him but he would definetly improve those chances

Here's the thing
with Bonds, the damage is already done. There aren’t any more significant records he can set so if he’s still productive you might as well let him play.

Kinda of funny Jayson Stark recommends this move.....
I posted the same request of having Griffey in a Rays uniform about 4-6 weeks ago on this very blog. I got ripped by most everyone (I did say he could replace our RF trio though). I could see Griffey as our DH and occasionally playing some RF. Even though he’s old, he’d fill the seats. Funny that a respeced anaylst feels the same way.

Let the Mariners sign him for first base.

I can't believe
A) How stupid that is (a shame on the ESPN lackey that brought it up)
b) It would actually be an upgrade over the incumbent.

At least you're not trying to do something like
Lure Ryan Klesko or Tim Salmon out of retirement. Yet.

Get Griffey
I would love to see the Rays get Griffey or Bonds. Both are hall of fame hitters who can help Crawford and Upton. Screw Cliff Floyd. Since when is Floyd mentioned in the same breath as guys like Bonds and Griffey? Floyd is not a hall of famer in any way and they are. And shut up about steroids. If you look at Cliff Floyd and think for a second that he never did roids you’re a moron!
by tampabaysportsblog.com on Jun 12, 2008 11:13 PM EDT 0 recs
I'd just like to add the Griffey is an incredibly mediocre player
and no team instrested in making the playoff would give him anything more than a PH/ part time DH role. He doesn’t help you, unless you are the Mariners, you’re season is shot and you want to sell tickets.

Don't sell Bonds short...
The guys can still crack some baseballs, and his On-Base Percentage is a pitch-count sucker. I just think that in general Griffey is a better fit. How can one complain that Griffey will both be injured all the time AND take the spots of younger players? The two cannot happen simultaneously.

Not for $16 million
Especially since Bonds can be had for minimum money.
You’d have to make the Reds eat a substantial amount.
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

Well, more like 9 million at this point
which would make it easier for the reds to eat a substantial amount. But if we were to do this sort of thing and take on the money, it would mean we could offer second tier prospects in exchange.
And as for Bonds: His agent saying that they haven’t received any offers, even at league minimum is one thing. Interpreting that as proof that Bonds would come HERE for league minimum and play on turf is quite another.

Exactly. No one has offered me ten cents for my house, does that mean I would sell for the ten cents? Bonds will not play for the minimum. His agent simply said no one has even offered the minimum, not that that was what they were seeking. Don’t think Bonds is paying him to get the minimum.
