RaysTheRoof clearly said BASEHIT. That means putting the ball in play and getting at least to first base with no error and no fielders choice. You DO NOT get an out on a base hit. You can preach all you want about giving your fielders a chance, but that is totally IRRELEVANT to the point. By mere definition a basehit means your fielders had no chance.

What is the point of all these comments? Clearly you are all debating different things. He was talking basehits v walks and you were talking base in play v walks. They are totally different. To compare the two is a joke in itself. Giving up a basehit doesn’t give you a chance to record an out. Obviously I’d rather have a guy that never walks someone than a pitcher that walks people. Of course pitchers should make guys put the ball in play. But to say walks are base hits is false.
Simply put
ball in play > walks
walks > base hit

Amen. Their response has nothing to do with what you posted. A base hit is obviously worse than a walk because it can move runners an extra base plus it puts pressure on the defense.

Either way
there would be a runner in scoring position. And you can’t assume that the runner would be able to take the extra base. And walks generally = more pitches which leads to a shorter outing. So yes, walks suck.

And you fail to understand the point that by mere definition a base hit means that there was no out recorded. You are contradicting yourself at every point. At one hand you are saying a base hit and a ball in play is the exact same yet then you say there is a 70 percent chance of an out on a ball in play. That is not possible. You can’t say that a ball in play results in a man at least on first base 100 percent of the time while also saying it results in an out 70 percent of the time. Do you understand that?

Base hit =/= ball in play
That’s our entire fucking point. You can’t say “Better than a base hit” because you don’t fucking know if it’s going to be a hit. A ball in play does NOT equal a hit. That’s where this whole argument goes to hell and that’s our problem with the initial comment.

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A BASE HIT. A BASE HIT. A BASE HIT. HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT. Do you understand? A BASE HIT. BATTER HITS BALL AND RUNS TO FIRST BASE WITHOUT GETTING AN OUT. That is what a hit is. Do you comprehend?
Look you are saying that we don’t know if a ball in play would result in a hit. Well you don’t know that pitches thrown will result in a walk. Your argument has absolutely no validity. You can’t on one hand look at the past (issued a walk) and then look into the future (the ball in play MIGHT result in a hit). You need the same frame of reference. We are saying given the two results a base hit or a walk a walk is favored. The debate isn’t a walk or maybe a base hit. Or he might get a base hit. It is a base hit. If you want to talk about “maybe” getting a base hit then we should add in the “maybe” of getting a walk.

And he was saying that they were better than giving up a base hit. Which they were. You need the same frame of reference. He clearly said “base hit” not ball in play. You can’t change the definition of a base hit no matter how hard you try. Obviously I’d rather the batter put the ball in play than take a walk. But a hit implies he hit the ball and made it to first base.
I’m sure you know what a hit is. So why are you trying to change the meaning?
