I like how the announcers make it sound like bringing in veterans makes the difference.

Why don't you understand

Walks lead to bad things. If you walk someone, you have no chance of getting an out. It’s very simple.

basehits don’t lead to bad things though. those are fine. that was what i said. i didn’t say anything about making contact. i said walks are better than basehits and you guys read way too much into that statement.

by RaysTheRoof on Jun 15, 2008 2:17 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

its a stupid statement

If you don’t even give your fielders a chance, what is the point. Not every ball put in play goes for a hit.

by SuperB on Jun 15, 2008 2:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

READ READ READ READ

RaysTheRoof clearly said BASEHIT. That means putting the ball in play and getting at least to first base with no error and no fielders choice. You DO NOT get an out on a base hit. You can preach all you want about giving your fielders a chance, but that is totally IRRELEVANT to the point. By mere definition a basehit means your fielders had no chance.

by matthan on Jun 15, 2008 2:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There's no guarantee that there would've been two hits.

That's not the point...

Walks are soooo bad because they dont give you a chance to record an out. Throwing strikes does….

by td32 on Jun 15, 2008 2:47 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What is the point of all these comments? Clearly you are all debating different things. He was talking basehits v walks and you were talking base in play v walks. They are totally different. To compare the two is a joke in itself. Giving up a basehit doesn’t give you a chance to record an out. Obviously I’d rather have a guy that never walks someone than a pitcher that walks people. Of course pitchers should make guys put the ball in play. But to say walks are base hits is false.

Simply put

ball in play > walks
walks > base hit

by matthan on Jun 15, 2008 2:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

are two walks better than two basehits? yes or no? just answer that question. don’t start trying to think it is asking more than it is. THAT WAS MY COMMENT. WHY CANT YOU GUYS READ?

by RaysTheRoof on Jun 15, 2008 2:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Amen. Their response has nothing to do with what you posted. A base hit is obviously worse than a walk because it can move runners an extra base plus it puts pressure on the defense.

by matthan on Jun 15, 2008 2:53 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Either way

there would be a runner in scoring position. And you can’t assume that the runner would be able to take the extra base. And walks generally = more pitches which leads to a shorter outing. So yes, walks suck.

by matthan on Jun 15, 2008 2:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You fail to understand the point...

When you force a batter to swing, there is about a 70% chance you get an out if the ball is put in play. When you walk a batter, there is a 0% chance you record an out.

by td32 on Jun 15, 2008 2:53 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And you fail to understand the point that by mere definition a base hit means that there was no out recorded. You are contradicting yourself at every point. At one hand you are saying a base hit and a ball in play is the exact same yet then you say there is a 70 percent chance of an out on a ball in play. That is not possible. You can’t say that a ball in play results in a man at least on first base 100 percent of the time while also saying it results in an out 70 percent of the time. Do you understand that?

Base hit =/= ball in play

That’s our entire fucking point. You can’t say “Better than a base hit” because you don’t fucking know if it’s going to be a hit. A ball in play does NOT equal a hit. That’s where this whole argument goes to hell and that’s our problem with the initial comment.

RJ

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A BASE HIT. A BASE HIT. A BASE HIT. HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT HIT. Do you understand? A BASE HIT. BATTER HITS BALL AND RUNS TO FIRST BASE WITHOUT GETTING AN OUT. That is what a hit is. Do you comprehend?

Look you are saying that we don’t know if a ball in play would result in a hit. Well you don’t know that pitches thrown will result in a walk. Your argument has absolutely no validity. You can’t on one hand look at the past (issued a walk) and then look into the future (the ball in play MIGHT result in a hit). You need the same frame of reference. We are saying given the two results a base hit or a walk a walk is favored. The debate isn’t a walk or maybe a base hit. Or he might get a base hit. It is a base hit. If you want to talk about “maybe” getting a base hit then we should add in the “maybe” of getting a walk.

by matthan on Jun 15, 2008 3:04 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And he was saying that they were better than giving up a base hit. Which they were. You need the same frame of reference. He clearly said “base hit” not ball in play. You can’t change the definition of a base hit no matter how hard you try. Obviously I’d rather the batter put the ball in play than take a walk. But a hit implies he hit the ball and made it to first base.

I’m sure you know what a hit is. So why are you trying to change the meaning?

At least it's Nolasco, we can beat him up.

Marlins announcers need to do better research

Hinske is making like 800k.

Yes...

But if you take out Ramirez, Hinske would be making 10x as much as the entire Marlins roster. So I understand their frustration.

At this rate, Jax won't make it thru the 5th on pitch counts alone

This is fifth straight struggle start for him.

Longlorious.

I like.

Why is this pitcher throwing strikes..

He is risking the chance of giving up a hit

Are we ever going to be allowed to play as many games as Boston?

Or are they going to have 3 games more than us the rest of the freaking season?

Boston pounding Cincy..

Crisp, Drew and Ellsbury with HR’s.

Ellsbury is amazing.. 33 SB’s.

Yep

And Crisp will be out the door soon. They don’t need him with Ellsbury becoming a star. Wherever he ends up, I hope Crawford pulls his hair again.
