Can't say I'm outright shocked...
...but I am a little surprised by the amount of Cubs fans. Am I alone in thinking that it looked worse than a Red Sox or Yanks game There was one shot on the ION broadcast where out of the 30-40 fans in the frame I didn’t see one Rays jersey!!!
Also funny hearing Joe Magrane bust out the ‘dreaded upper decker’ line again. Classic.

That's embarrassing.
You mean to tell me that 60% of the fans flew down here from Chicago? Highly unlikely. If you live in the Tampa Bay area from 20 years, after moving from Chicago, and you still a Cubs fan? You are not a true fan, you are pathetic.
Most “Cubs fans” I know in the area root for the Rays when the Cubs and Rays are not playing. Terrible. The Rays are the baseball mistress to fans. Terrible.
Go Sonny, let’s get some wins and hope we can give cubs fans a reason to forget about Chicago, after 20 years.

Just got home from the game...
A ton of Cubs fans there, but nobody acted like a Red Sox or Yanks fan where I was sitting. Three should share the MVP for tonight: Ruggiano, Longoria, and Aybar. The each made exceptional plays in the 9th. Without those three Percy would have blown the save.

Methinks the Cubs fans are more like Green Bay Packer fans
They’re just there and they will enjoy the game no matter what happens, unlike Sox and Yankees fans who make me want to unleash some brawlfen(s?)e of my own.

There are fewer bandwagoneers among Cubs Fan
Than Sox Fan and Yankee Fan.
Then again, if they finally win one, that’ll probably change.

This is 100% true.
Technically, you can’t be a Cubs fan and be on the bandwagon at the same time. That may change after this season, but the prior 100 seasons in their history make bandwagonning (is that a word?) impossible.

Use "bandwagoneering"
It sounds more professional. =P
I think Chicago is different from New York and Boston. You didn’t see very many bandwagoneers after the White Sox won it all in 2005.

No, Packer fans enjoy the game
Packer Bandwagoners on the other hand, are exactly as you say. A Packer Fan can tell you about Lambeau Field, a Packer Bandwagoner doesn’t know where Green Bay is.

To be more precise...
Ask a local bandwagoner what Green Bay is, and they’ll tell you it’s a group of cities around the southern coast of Lake Michigan.

Just got home...
The game was absolutely electric. It was a shame to have Kaz not go very deep in the game, but the team as whole did a great job of grinding out a win when two of our best pitchers (Kaz and Percy) didn’t have their best stuff.
..On the Cubs fans note, I was also surprised a little by the sheer mass of the Cubs fans. I don’t know if that was just because it was their first game ever in the area or not, but it will be interesting to see if they are out in equally large numbers tomorrow. Overall, the Cubs fans weren’t a-holes like our AL East rivals, but it was difficult to drown out their “Let’s go Cubbies” chants. I’m not sure if it was just the couple sections around me or not, but they were extremely loud (and beer sales had to be through the roof). There were a couple of jerks (but they merely matched the amount of drunken idiots also there in Rays gear). I can’t wait to make it back out again tomorrow! Go Rays!

As USFraysfan said it was electric. The crowd was intense as the game was. Evan Longoria is god. Balfour pitched amazing. It has been said. This team is showing they can overcome some troubles and still pull out a win.

Electric is an understatement.
This game definitely had a playoff type atmosphere (sorry for the cliche). The 9th was the most intense inning since CC’s opening day walk-off a few years back. My first ever walk-off defensive win that I’ve been to!

I would say 60% Cubs fans.
But I really can’t blame them all for coming out. First time ever for them in Tampa. I had a tough decision this morning: My throwback Sandberg jersey from ‘84 or my Longoria Jersey. It took me about 45 minutes to decide and I grabbed my Longoria jersey.

Not likely
Marlin Fan (and bandwagoneers) showed up in force in the 2003 playoffs, to the tune of 60k+ per home game. I was at NLDS Game 4 and NLCS Game 5. Not much in the way of opposing fans.
Just make sure, when we make the playoffs, that you buy your tickets fast, to make sure it is that way.

I was at Game 5.
The stadium was packed tight full of Marlins fans, but I saw plenty of Cubs fans as well. Sosa was always a big draw in Miami and during regular season games Mark Kotsay and Kevin Millar would get heckled like crazy by the Hispanics that all bought tickets in RF just to see Sosa. I’ve never seen it that bad in the Trop. There wasn’t one Marlins fan sticking up for either.

Still can't understand why its so hard to shed past loyalties
I lived in NY/NJ area for first 25 years of my life and was a diehard Yank-Mees fan, moved down here 8 years ago and only took me a year or two to shed my previous allegiance…and that was when the Yanks were winning all those World Series and the Rays hadn’t even won 70 games yet! You don’t live in Chicago anymore, get it? Home team people!!!
Great, the game is on ESPN tonight. Now the whole country can witness the embarrassment of the opposing teams’ fans drowning out the home team with their chants. I may get flak for this, but I’d rather the stadium be half-empty with mostly Rays fans that to put up with the ‘big-market takeover’.
Am I overreacting?

I am born and raised in Lakeland
Growing up my choices were either the Cubs on WGN, the Braves on TBS, or the Mets on WWOR. I never had a hometown team to choose from, so it was the Cubs. But, as with the Rays, when you stick with a team that has been down for so long (100 years and counting) you want to be there when the finally win.

Yeah
But you missed out on the community aspect of the losing, and you will with the winning. There is something about that vibe that courses through an area when one of the local teams are succeeding, especially after years of struggles. Remember back in the late nineties when the Bucs first started making the playoffs and everywhere you went there were Dunn and Alstott jerseys? The smiles to each other as we load up on beer and chips for the playoff parties. God, I can’t wait!

On a larger scale, yes.
But in the last two days I’ve gotten a ton of phone calls, e-mails, and text messages (a lot from people I haven’t talked to in a while) about the Cubs and Rays games this week. I won’t have the community aspect, your absolutely right on that one, but in no way will I be celebrating alone.
I decided to wear my Longoria jersey for two main reasons last night: I had field passes for batting practice and the Cubs are going to win their division without much resistance. I never jeered anything the Cubs did last night, and I always cheered for the Rays. I didn’t trash talk with any of the visiting fans like I normally do either. I just enjoyed what was a great game and hope the other two games are at least half as exciting as Game 1 was.

also once a cubs fan
There is no way I am cheering for the Cubs over the Rays, but I hear you. I think a lot of us were fans of some other team before the Rays came to town. I watched WGN, and seeing the Cubs at Wrigley was my first MLB game. Most Cubs fans are pretty good baseball folk, they always pack it in at any stadium anywhere in the country….that’s what having WGN a national TV station will do for you. I wish I could go to these games, but live far, far away from Tampa Bay now. But still, I have a lot of friends who are Cubs fans and we have been heckling each other all season long waiting for this series.

Go Rays! Cubs fans can get the hell out.
I too saw the game on WGN as a kid. I grew up as a military brat with no home team really. But, when my pops moved to Tampa, I knew what a gift it was to have a home team. For once I had guys wearing my hometown’s name on their chest. For that, the Rays get my undying loyalty.

Question.
Greetings, Rays fans! I have a question for you. The Rays are winning now with a lot of homegrown talent. Obviously, the team’s record in past seasons relieved some of the pressure on these youngsters to perform, but even today Evan’s numbers aren’t quite what you’d expect from him once he comes into his own. How patient are you guys as fans, and the team’s front office, with these players? Over in Cubs land it seems CF Felix Pie, SS Ronny Cedeno, and others can’t go 9 ABs without people lamenting their utter failure and destruction as prospects. Some of us are more patient, but it seems they don’t get much of a chance to get enough ABs at the major-league level to get a fair assessment. Your thoughts?

The hallmark
of the current Rays management is patience with young talent. They move prospects up very carefully because they don’t want to demote them once arrived. Fans are like they are everywhere, some buying into the need for patience while others are ready to cast aside anyone who doesn’t go 4-4 when they happen to be at the ballpark, but the front office trusts its judgment and tries to give prospects every chance to prove their worth.

For a good example of this..
...see how the Yanks fans/writers have all but thrown in the towel on Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes. If they don’t come up and dominate like Joba they’re a failure. Probably the same atmosphere in Chi-town.

Compare
the handling of Upton, Navarro, Jackson, by the Rays to the way other teams have dealt with players such as Lind, Clement, Bailey, Pie, LaRoche et al. Of course, each case has its special qualities, but the pattern here is to stick with young players who struggle early but who management think have talent.
