Rays Interested in Freddy Garcia?
The potential bidding war for free-agent right-hander Freddy Garcia gets more fascinating by the day. News of the Tigers' interest no doubt will alarm the White Sox; Garcia is close with Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, but also quite friendly with Tigers shortstop Carlos Guillen, another fellow Venezuelan. The Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Indians and Rays are among the other clubs interested in Garcia, who is trying to make a comeback from shoulder surgery and could throw for teams in early July.
That per Ken Rosenthal's new FOX Sports column. Garcia is 33 by a week and is coming off of shoulder surgery. The Rays always seem to express at least a little interest in these cases; Troy Percival and Brian Anderson pop to mind as well as those low key conversations about Mark Mulder not too long ago. Garcia's an above average pitcher for his career, but his upper 80's velocity may be zapped a bit from the surgery.

how much $ would garcia want?
also i think that if the rays sign garcia they should try sonny in the pen to take hammel’s spot because even though he has 8 wins he reminds me of jp howell in that he would be more successful in the pen

One of the best in the league might be a bit of a stretch
He’s an ok guy that would be an ok fit as our 4th guy, but I would hope that we don’t even contemplate this.

He'd be cheap
Only money for a guy that could be a cog at the back-end of the rotation. I’d be down, assuming we DFA Glover to make room.

Doubt it'll be too cheap.
2002 Seattle Mariners $3,800,000
2003 Seattle Mariners $6,875,000
2004 Seattle Mariners $6,875,000
2005 Chicago White Sox $8,000,000
2006 Chicago White Sox $9,000,000
2007 Philadelphia Phillies $10,000,000
He ain’t signing for the minimum.

I meant as in, it'll only cost money
Money is something that I think this regime is willing to part w/. As long as it is done intelligently, they seem to be willing to spend. Signing an average starter for a lot of money might not have made a lot of sense at the beginning of the season. Now that the team is in contention it may make more sense. SP is more of a need for those other teams at this point, but I don’t know how long we can expect Sonny and E-Jax to be almost league average. So, I’d be surprised to see us do it, because he isn’t worth us much to us, but not shocked as we push for the team’s first PO birth.

This makes a lot of sense
if he can be a league average starter, that helps us out tremendously. He’s the type of pitcher we should be pursuing.
