Good thing the Rays are

playing so well, they can afford to be patient with him.

by Gator80 on Jun 2, 2008 9:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The opposite is true

if you’re bad, you can be patient. We are good. We have the ability to rush him to help the big league club

Will he get another start at Vero?

I was thinking of going.

Patience?

We are in contention. He is seasoned. He is good. When he is ready he should be brought up. There should be ZERO babying of him. He should be pitching in our MLB rotation in a couple months if he continues this pitching.

Agree

this kid can throw and he is ready. If he pitches like this in AA and AAA he better see the Trop.

Ok

I won’t mention the name that was in the Prior comment.

Keep in mind

Joe Maddon is our manager, not Dusty Baker.

He’ll be fine.

Prior was snake bit earlier in his career too, those injuries could’ve happened to anyone.

Is he a candidate to skip AA?

If so, give him 5-7 more starts here and move him up to AAA.

by P Brady on Jun 2, 2008 9:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Never a good idea

Jumping to AA is tough enough – going all the way to AAA could be ugly. It would be akin to going from facing JV hitters to college hitters in the next game.

by Jason Collette on Jun 2, 2008 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

From a lot of what I’ve read, the stiffest competition is often at the AA level, which is less likely to be littered with AAAA hitters. For their part the Rays seemed more than willing to ignore what Longoria did at AAA when making their decisions on whether he was MLB ready.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jun 2, 2008 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bad move

He needs to be tested at AA since that is where most teams keep their top prospects.

Bad Karma. Plus I think this team is good enough to beat the best.

Besides

This means Manny will play DH, so they’ll have actual defense in LF

by JMB on Jun 2, 2008 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Manny is some measure of defense in LF

He’s not quick, but damn if he doesn’t have a rocket launcher attached to his sholder. And he handles left field in Fenway well enough.

by kericr on Jun 3, 2008 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alright, lemme clearify

They’ll have actual range in LF. Remember Ellsbury in our last series in Boston?

by JMB on Jun 3, 2008 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well he hasnt even given up a run yet!

i think in a couple of months he could be the replacement for sonny and sonny could be used as a reliever where i think he would be better suited (jp howell) maybe?

by RaysOfHope on Jun 2, 2008 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Remember he was a college pitcher drafted #1 overall. These guys aren’t supposed to take more than a year to get up. He is older than pretty much all of our top prospects. So really he should be “ahead” of them based on skill and talent.

by matthan on Jun 2, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

I don’t think Tim Lincecum was ever given too much of an opportunity to settle in , and he turned out alright.

He's the exception, not the rule.

I’m as big a Price fan as anyone, but this talk is premature.

And where did I suggest he be promoted to MLB right now? I was simply saying that there is no need for him to “settle in” at the FSL.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jun 3, 2008 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And I even backed off my Lincecum comparison. Look to nitpick much do we?

Guess, I misread the sequence. Sorry about that. Guess we’ll have to agree to completely agree.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jun 3, 2008 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the three of us are on the same page, no late-night misunderstandings here, everyone move along.

For the record, I don’t agree with talk of skipping levels or August callups or that as a top pick he should be called up after no more than a year, nevermind that such suggestions don’t really fit the pattern of the current organization but a promotion to Montgomery after a few more quality starts wouldn’t be completely out of the question. Double-A would present a much clearer read on his progression.

BTW, looks like he had a lot of flyball outs tonight.

Longlorious.

by RATW on Jun 3, 2008 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It seems that he wasn’t “great” tonight but toughed through, which is probably more encouraging than just blowing everything by these guys.

Price= Better Chamberlain in Sept.

I am saying it again, I believe this kid will be up in August-September in a 8th inning role or even replacing Sonnanstine.

by Cory Alexander on Jun 2, 2008 11:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Give him time

I do not want to be in a Chamberlain situation where we are nto sure how to use this kid. Lets groom him as a starter and take our time. I also don’t want a rush job to result in an injury like Liriano.

by CyKaz on Jun 3, 2008 8:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're not rushed

if you’re the best pitcher in the majors and that’s what Liriano was for a short period of time. The injury had nothing to do with him being in the big leagues.

The only injury from being rushed is jetlag.

Different Universe..

Once in a great while a player/pitcher comes along that just dominates. David Price is that type of player. He completely dominates hitters period. Price will be the LH pitcher that other teams set their standards to. And yes, he is that damn good.

Jack Nicklaus once said there would be a player who would come on tour and dominate, hence Tiger Woods. From all reports and scouting info., Price just may be the equivalent to Tiger on the diamond.

I’ll look forward to September when the “D – Train” gets the call.

What's Scott Kazmir? Johan Santana?

Temper the expectations just a bit here.

Seriously

Rays fans of all people are guilty of constantly underrating Kaz. Every year, there is some prospec that comes along that is going to be better than him, and yetm every year, Kazmir is the best pitcher the Rays put out there. When are Rays fans going to realize how special this kid is, and how good he is going to be for a long time? Even if Price lives up to his potential, it’s still not a lock that he’s better than Kaz.

Kaz is a top 10 pitcher in baseball, and, arguably, the best pitcher in the AL right now.

Yes, we really do have fans.

Agreed

But I can’t wait to argue about who the best LHP in baseball is, and both of them wearin the Navy and Yellow (still seems a little weird).

by rglass44 on Jun 3, 2008 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with this

unless Kaz blows out his arm, I have a hard time seeing anyone being better than him. Sorry, he’s our ace and it’s not that close.

I don’t think anyone is talking about him moving to MLB now. But since I’m Nostradamus I’ll do a little prediction. I think he’ll move up to AA ball fairly soon. He’ll have a handful of starts there with at least a sub 1.5 era and a sub .75 whip. At that point, if we are still in the race, he should be moved up. If he is ready and he can help the big ballclub then he should be up. If he stalls out at a level then so be it. I have no problem taking our time if he isn’t ready. But like I said he was a college pitcher drafted number 1 overall. This isn’t a high school pitcher or a mid first round college pitcher. This guy was drafted first because he has the talent to move up quickly. Also rushing him isn’t putting him at risk for an injury. Remember his arm is “strong” considering how many collegiate innings he has thrown. Also he missed a bit of time this year so he won’t get a full pro season. Limiting Price’s innings will not be a concern. If we are talking about injury that is not from extended innings (IE mechanica or a fluke) then he is just as likely to get hurt pitching late in the season in Montgomery than he does in the final month with the big ballclub. There should only be two standards that we use with this kid. 1) Is he ready and 2) How much better will he be than Sonnanstine. If he dominates A ball and AA ball, and Andy hovers around a 5.00 era then we will be foolish not to bring him up for the stretch run.

by matthan on Jun 3, 2008 9:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wade Davis and Jake McGee should be in line before Price for a rotation spot this year.

Disagree

Neither are as polished and as much as I’ve pimped McGee, Price has better stuff. Price’s fastball has ticked up and McGee, at least to this point in the season is sitting in the same range as Price’s.

If they move Price along quickly, I suppose you’re right, but I wasn’t insinuating either was better, simply that Davis should be moved to AAA when Price goes to AA, assuming they keep them on the same rest schedule.

Andrew Miller says hi.

In all fairness to Miller, he has 29 Ks in his last 35 innings and had a 2.43 ERA with a 1.08 WHIP and .202 BAA in May with a suspect defense behind him

In his first June start on Sunday against Philly who has a top 3 offense in the NL right now, he went 5 innings 3 hits 2 ER

also it should be noted that through his first 10 ML starts last year playing in a difficult AL division, his ERA stayed under 4. Then I believe (I coudl be wrong) he battled injuries and had a rough final 3 starts in August that made his overall numbers wors ethan they were

by blazinrayz on Jun 3, 2008 10:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He's improving, yes, and that's to be expected.

But I meant in terms of rushing a kid to the majors because of his draft status. Remember Miller had three appearances in A-ball before heading to the Tigers in 2006, then spent some time in the minors in 2007, and still hasn’t fully reached his potential.

What’s your deal? Are you working for the biscuits this summer? Were you a Rays fan before? Did you know about the site before you took the internship? Did they request that you keep the faithful Rays fans up to date? Because that would be cool.
