Sternberg Hints Rays Will Buy
"It's got to be something that's right. We're still long-term greedy, which is a motto from one of my old businesses, and what that means is that you can't completely mortgage your future."
So, in other words, we're likely going to buy someone, but it's going to be a younger player and/or a smaller package for an older player, meaning its almost impossible to speculate who/what the Rays could be aiming for.

Really?
Sounded to me like he was trying to temper expectations.

The only reason i'd prefer a 'name'
Is if it meant taking on dollars instead of giving up top prospects

Though I suppose I should defer to the tone of the author
Topkin typically reads between the lines fairly well on the quotes he gets to hear, so if he took it as “not ruling out” spending, i’ll defer to him.

Sounds to me
as if he is simply being forthright, and in my view making a proper decision.
I'm Pretty Good At Reading Between The Lines
Sounds to me like we’re going to sign Barry Bonds and trade for Albert Pujols, Ichiro and Johan Santana.
