That. Was. Garza.
10 Strikeouts
1 Walk
1 Hit
1 Earned Run
This might've been the most dominant start in Rays history, outside of Hanley Ramirez doing what only Hanley Ramirez can do nobody hit Garza hard. Cutting fastball action, slicing curve, breaking change. This was a pitcher with his best stuff absolutely dealing today.
Using the "Game Score" metric it turns out Garza's game was a 90, Shields one-hit shutout of the Angels scored a 93. Let's call it the second most dominant start.

Wasn't Shields the highest rated game of the year?
I dont remember what the stat was, but it had the best rating of any game pitched this season.

SHields threw 40 less pitches..
Had 2 less walks, gave up one more hit, and had one less K. I think that Game Score has some flaws, because SHields outing appears far better.

Shields got a 93, Garza got a 90.

So that would give the Rays 3 of the top 5 game scores this season

Isn't Sonny in the top ten, too?

He is tied for 9th best in the AL
for his complete game shutout vs the White Sox

That was a hell of a start
The pitch that Hanley hit out seemed like a good pitch too, just a better swing. Miss Delmon Young much? lol

99.9% of hitters roll that pitch over
Hanley is just some kind of special hitter.

That was a bastard home run
You’re right, Hanley went all Vladimir Gurrero on that pitch, it was headed low and outside and he leaned out and dipped to get wood on it. I still don’t understand how he got enough behind it to get that pitch out.

Beautiful!
And feel free to blame me.
I was the idiot that called his wife to tell her (in the most vague codespeak I could) that the no-no was in tact through 6.
She had a hard time following my cryptic message but when she finally decoded it, she called me an “idiot” right as Ramirez went yard.
Freeking Awesome by Garza…
Plain stupid by me.
And no, I don’t believe that these things are jinxable or that I have my fingers are on the pulse of existence, outcome or possibilities. But I’m still an idiot.

Exactly what I did. I called my friend after the 6 inning,
I told him there were still 0’s across the Marlins board. Then in the 7th Hanley hit a fucking HR

I was good
I waited till after the homer and then was all “GARZA IS THROWING A ONE HITTER!”
by Gator80 on Jun 26, 2008 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
DeWayne Staats was pretty annoying
He never mentioned the words “no hitter”, but the baseball gods get pissed when the announer tells people to call their friends after the 6th.

I have hats from all three logos
My oldest logo hat was covered in autographs, but I lucked out and found one on E-bay. I’ve been rockin the retro logo a lot lately.

Old Logos
I don’t have the original logo hat, but I got a sweet game used Devil Rays jersey from Arizona Fall League. It looks just like the ‘99 jersey but it’s light blue instead of white or gray.
I need a new green hat because I wore the hell out of that one. Could use an all-black one too…
I digress….
Matt Garza KICKS ASS!!!

Is there any place to buy a jersey that isn't $300
The store at the trop have them for like 300 a pop. I don’t want to dish that much out again, but I want another one. Is there another store that sells authentics for like 200-250?

E-Bay's probably your best shot at getting one cheaper
...but you might end up with a fake one too. :(

I got a nice Lightning jersey from Ebay for $46
don’t bid on anything that is priced ridiculously low and you can get some good deals.

Best place on the web
I’ve linked this place before. I was very impressed with their selection of minor league hats and their quick shipping. They sell Replica and BP Performance jerseys for $68.00, and 5950 hats for $23.99. They sell the authentic game jerseys you speak of for $187.00. You won’t find them cheaper, unless they’re the old logo on clearance (and they actually have a lot of that stuff at very low prices as well).

I keep trying not to let my hopes get too high
but the Rays make it harder and harder all the time, they keep exceeding my expectations.

Did Garza have a two seamer in Minnesota?
Because I read reports saying his fastball was rather straight. That two seamer has got to be one of the five single best pitches in all of baseball. It has some of the most insane action on a fastball I have ever seen.

Yes, we really do have fans.

One nice sign
is that since May 28, covering 6 starts, Garza’s K/BB ratio is 4-1 with 36 Ks in 39.1 innings (8.29/9) to 9 BBs (2.07/9). It includes 3 games when he had more Ks than innings pitched and no start with more than 2 BBs.
There were 2 poor starts and one mediocre one in that time, so it is not all sunshine and buttercups, but the fact that he is striking out people and not walking many is a good sign.
by bobr on Jun 26, 2008 5:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Its a very good sign...
The one question I had about him after the trade was if he’d be able to improve his control. Those numbers show that he has and hopefully it continues. Rates like that are generally reserved for superstars.

Garza was incredible
I can see our rotation 2 years from now being:
Kazmir
Price
Garza
Shields
and name your prospect.
Can you imagine Shields as your #4 guy? Potentially one of the best MLB rotations in the last 20 years.

"outside of Hanley Ramirez doing what only Hanley Ramirez can do"
nobody hit Garza hard
That’s the key point. He was dominant. May not see a better performance for a long time.

i credit navarro some for this start
if navi didn’t get all up in his grill a few weeks ago garza may not be performing this well. you have to admit that navarro calls a great game and has handled our staff better than i would have ever imagined. navi is here to stay glad we didn’t end up drafting posey! go rays!
