Good News, Bad News
The good? David Price makes his AA debut tonight with Montgomery, while Tim Beckham makes his professional debut in Princeton playing DH. Also, Rays 1B Carlos Pena will be DHing for high class-A Vero Beach and should be activated if all goes well. Also, relief prospect Eduardo Morlan will represent the Rays as a member of the World team in the Futures Game.
The bad? ProjectProspect is reporting that top LHP prospect Jake McGee will undergo Tommy John surgery. McGee was removed from a start last week with forearm/elbow soreness. Assuming he has the surgery within the next few weeks, it will wipe out the rest of this season(obviously) as well as most of next season. For means of comparison, Phillies RHP prospect Kyle Drabek had TJ last June and won't return to a mound during a game until August this year at the earliest. TJ is no death sentence for a pitcher, particularly one of McGee's age, but he lives and dies by his fastball. If his velocity never returns to the mid-high 90's, I very much doubt how effective he can be.

new plan
should be to make him a reliever when he comes back and let him rebuild his arm strength. His fastball is his bread and butter anyhow so just let him pump gas from the pen and scrap working on a third pitch and just focus on two pitches.

This is why I try not to get too worked up about pitching prospects and start projecting who will be slotted where in the 2010 rotation. Just hope the velocity returns.
But hey, we still have healthy Wade Townsend, Jeff Niemann, Chuck Tiffany, David Newmann and Will Kline projected for the 2014 rotation!
Longlorious.

this sucks... but
he is young and will be able to come back from this….
Also agree with the idea of making him a reliever after this, as that seemed to be the road he was traveling anyway…

The McGee news fucking blows goats. At least DP and Beckham are doing well.

McGee was in AAA....
Right? Does this open up a spot for then to put price up for a start or 2 given that he still blew away A batters? This gives him more time to adjust to better hitting people and would, imo, make him more major league ready for a playoff run if something were to happen to one of our starting 5.
