6/28: RAYS (48-31) at PIT (37-42)
Tampa Bay Rays at Pittsburgh Pirates, Jun 28, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
You know who's open to the whole changing positions/lineup slots for the good of the team thing? B.J. Upton. He's batting leadoff tonight and Marc Lancaster provided this quote from Upton:
Joe Maddon approached Upton last night about moving up to the top of the order and “it was a pretty quick answer for me,” said the center fielder.
But he's not a team leader or anything like that, nope.

by R.J. Anderson on Jun 28, 2008 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
or course we’re not..and obviously a hr would be better…but an out for a run is certainly productive….no one is saying an out to move a runner is a good thing..unless its moving him to home plate…
by pmoc on Jun 28, 2008 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with most RJ...
But that was as productive an out as you can get…
by tallyray on Jun 28, 2008 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just for fun...
The run expectancy says that the Rays were in a worst position after the out than they were before. But of course that would be true.
Runners on 2,3 and 0 outs gives a run expectancy of 2.03
Runner on 3 and 1 out gives an expectancy of .97
So basically Longo changed the run expectancy by only .06 runs (considering the run scored). with his out. That has to be the smallest dropoff after an out possible.

"Fuck you Edwin, you good-for-nothing piece of shit," Mendicus was overheard as saying while angrily clicking the "Refresh" button on his web browser 14 times after pitcher Edwin Jackson loaded the bases with three straight walks. "Throw the ball over the goddamn plate. I need a win here, you idiot. I’m getting killed in wins."

you know edwin
there are other things you can do besides throw a ball or throw it down the middle
by joeybw on Jun 28, 2008 9:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah we saw it coming, hard hit balls the last couple innings.
sometimes i wonder why we don’t turn it over to the pen at the first sign of trouble, and not wait til it’s too late.

What's up with...
the whole Pitrates/Crawford uniform tonight. With the standard Pirate helmets it kinda ruins the whole “throw back” thing

Obviously this is hindsight
But why did Cliff Floyd not pinch hit for Jackson with 2 men on? That seemed like a terrible move by maddon
by GenghisJohn on Jun 28, 2008 9:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
he wanted edwin to get on 1st
and make a terrible steal attempt. thats why

Raise your hand if....
You ever thought you would be doing these four things on a Saturday in late June… intensely watching the Rays play the Pirates, blogging while watching it, simultaneously rooting for a 9th inning comeback by the Astros, and thinking about how to get playoff tickets in the fall?

by td32 on Jun 28, 2008 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t care, but I’m not an MLB manager.
BTW, Houston just used their backup catcher as a PH, so there goes that theory.

LL guy popping in here to say:
That was a ridiculous at-bat by Johnny Gomes. And the Astros have two men on with two out and Lance Berkman up in the bottom of the 8th.
Go Rays! Win the World Series!
Go Mariners! Win the #1 Draft Pick!
