Red Sox vs. Rays
Nothing that get's my goat more then a "Let's Go Red Sox chant" at the Trop. It's a wonderful feeling knowing the Rays are still quite competitive at the beginning of July. I still can't fathom that, more then likely, July 31st will come around and I don't have to hear about a Carl Crawford trade rumor. That's pretty nice.
Rayniacs unite. How do you feel about this series. I do not need to tell about the Boston Red Sox, you should already be familiar with them. I will say this, I am loving our pitching match-ups in comparison to the the last few series were I can only see us winning one or two. But, with the big three of Shields, Garza, and some guy named Kazmir I am liking our odds.
One last note on Red Sox fans. Don't they owe someone big something big. I mean, how many times did we hear, "oh if the Sox win a World Series I will die in peace." Well, there is a big guy upstairs that would be happy to collect on the Red Sux end of the bargain. Just saying!
Let's go wash out some Red Sox! Let's go Rays!

For “Rayniacs”
Just awful.
Oh, and I’m still not liking the perception that the Rays are playing to the level of their competition. That being said, the Sox are good, so I’m saying 2 out of 3 at home. I really wish Coco wasn’t suspended, that punk needs some chin music.
I like the phrase Rayniacs.
You’re more then a Rays Fan, you not quite a maniac. You are a Rayniac! Viva Los Rays!

i actually like that coco is suspended for this series!
coco has been doing pretty good as of late and now they will probably have to play brandon moss instead of rice crispies who got snapped, crackled, and popped. and if we sweep i might have to pinch my self to see if i am dreaming….and btw those of us wont cant the rays games all the time the wednesday’s game is on espn with kaz going against dice-k also when the rays play on tv this year and i watch they are 3-3
I have a gut feeling that there are going to be a lot more Rays fans attending these games than we are used to seeing
Your gut is wrong
it will be close to 50/50 still and we will still hear plenty of Red Sox chants. If you live in this market, please don’t blog during home games – thanks.

If you're willing to pay for my gas and tickets to every game
Then sure, otherwise I would advise you that the people on this blog aren’t the ones you need to be telling to attend games and support the team.

How many games have you attended this year?

Well, then I will shut up.
Lucky. Again, this is the first year that I can afford season tickets but, the whole time is a factor. Is it worth it to buy season ticket and only be able to attend 8-12 games? Lucky.

good point, I didn't.
If I had to guess I would say 30/41 with the rest going to clients, family, friends. Tonight all four of my tickets are going to clients (don’t worry, they are Rays fans) and I am buying a seperate ticket just to witness what is going on. And I was not telling anyone to explain themselves or telling them what to do – I was just asking to make an effort to attend the greatest series in our history, and leave the keyboard at home. And RJ – I will give you a whole set to a game and buy your bus ticket – deal? This whole series is used up, but name your game.
Didn't mean to be like a douche
but just wondering. Tonight is my 3rd miss game of the season and it pisses me off. It is just interesting to see how other people use their tickets. Just wanted to see cause people in my section have season tickets but I will never see them, so I wanted more clarity. Keep it up and make sure Rays fans get those tickets.

Same thing in my section
38 games attended, 43 if you count ST, and every day of training camp.
And RJ, I understand everyone’s situation is different, but it doesn’t look good when the head honcho of the Rays blog responds to a plea for fans to show up with excuses.

I'll be the douche
Unless you want to buy me tickets, gas, food, and do the last hour of my job during weekday games, I suggest you keep your mouth shut about telling me not to blog during home games. I’ve watched the vast majority of games that have been broadcast on TV. My faith in this team is well grounded in my own personal support. You buying tickets and attending games does not make you a better fan than me, it makes you one with more discresionary income.
I never said me
having my tickets makes me a better fan. You are being a douche since you did not read what I was saying at all. I am not saying everyone can or should go to every game. Not everyone has the luxury or want to attend them all. I did not tell you to not blog during home games that was someone else.

it makes you one with more discresionary income.
Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it makes me the one who spends my discretionary income on the Rays rather than other stuff – who knows? And I am definately not saying you are a bad person, or any less of a fan than I am. All I was asking (nicely I may add) is that if at all possilbe, please attend this series, instead of sitting at home in front of a computer. I already know that there will be more Sox fans than Rays fans at the game (which makes me sick), and I doubt they have more money than us. I am just so tired of excuses and will be no longer suprised IF this team is moved.
"I already know that there will be more Sox fans than Rays fans at the game (which makes me sick)"
Knowing the history of previous Rays/Sox games, I hope you feel better since you were wrong.
I agree
Look going to a game costs 12 or so dollars depending on the game. That isn’t very expensive. You are going to eat dinner regardless of going to the game or not. So that is a sunk cost. Parking? Free. Apply yourself like George Costanza. Do you have to get drunk or even drink at the game? No that is a choice. Gas of course depends on how far and what you drive. So realistically you can be looking at 20-30 bucks to go to a game. That shouldn’t be a deal breaker for pretty much anyone that makes over minimum wage.
Now obviously that is just for a single game. Going to multiple games adds up. But seriously if someone cannot afford to go to 5 to 10 games in a season then they have bigger problems. Frankly they should be working or going to school instead of blogging at that point.
Now of course there are plenty of other valid reasons not to go. Prior engagement. Work. Family. etc, but the price of going to a game should not be among them.
I can't give away tickets on this site
So yeah, I think I have a good reason to open my mouth.

I don’t nor does anyone else have to explain ourselves to you. When I had no obligations I was a fixture at section .144. It hurts my stomach seeing the success that my favorite team is having and I can not be there to see it. Not because I can’t afford it, but because I can’t get off time from work. What is a guy going to do? Miss out on a promotion and be a Rays fan making 20gs a year or take a promotion and eventually become a CEO and one day own part of the Rays franchise. You tell me to wise and mighty one. What should I do.

I go to the majority of home games
The only games I consistently miss are nights where I have grad school
i hope so look at the rays record in games that big crowds show up...
Key stat: With large crowds expected, the Rays are 9-1 this year at home in front of 30,000 or more and 11-2 in front of 25,000-plus.
i hope that 30,000 show up so we can improve that record to 12-1!
I really think the amount of Rays fans are going to shock everyone
Granted the Sox fans already have their tickets for the most part, but there is going to be a massive Rays walk up crowd. I personally already know quite a few people that rarely if ever go to the games that are planning on going.

I'm going to get home and get in trouble
I just know tonight is the night the wife will want me to do something that is going to take me away from the TV. I’m putting the gauntlet down – getting to watch all 3 games of this series is easily worth a month of sleeping on the couch. I haven’t been this excited for a regular season game since opening day.

From a guy who is married i give advice.
Talk with her. Explain to her how import it is to you. I know I communicate these things with my wife. She understands, and she just holds it over my head when she wants to do things like go to chick-flick movies or go on long walks in the middle of a hot afternoon.
If she doesn’t understand go out to Rent-a-center and rent a VERY comfortable couch for a month.

Hey all
Haven’t been around much lately, but had to check in and wish you all luck for the next 3 days. Strategically I guess should root for the Sox to take 2 of 3 – more chance to make up ground on both for my guys – but it would be sweeter to just catch the Sox and push them out of the playoffs.
Gotta be exciting for all down there – first place in July??!! Hope your fans, even newbies, show up big. If this can’t get Tampa’s attention turned to baseball, don’t know what else could.

Advice to Rays, "Make it witchy like last time"
You have to admit, an Angels-Rays playoff series would be much more fun to watch than a Red Sox-Rays series.
Red Sox Fans After The 2nd Trop Sweep
In 2004, I wanted Boston to win the whole thing. I think a lot of America did, becuase, afterall, they’d waited so long to do it, came so close in ‘86 and were the Yankees arch-rivals.
But there is a phrase we should have kept in mind: You Better Be Careful What You Wish For, You Just May Get It!
We got it. What we got in 2004 was a great baseball story. A good, solid team won the World Series, and a good, solid sports city was rewarded. I don’t begrudge the team or its fans anything. But since that time, there have been hundreds of thousands of Red Sox fans either coming out of the woodwork or jumping on board. All the newbies are the ones who make me sick and make me dispise the Red Sox now.
The following spring, we were at a Rays/Oakland game in April in the Trop. A section over from us and a few rows back were five guys, early 20s, all dressed up in Red Sox crap. Why? Boston was playing across the country at the same time. Fans? Ok. Then go watch your game at a bar and cheer for your team there. They didn’t just come to the Trop to watch TB/Oakland, they were there to chant and be loud with an inferiority complex so freakin’ big it was embarrassing. All they talked about was how “Fenway” was better, the Sox were champs, Boston rules, etc. Ad friggin nausiem.
And it’s been like that since. Walking into Wednesday night’s game (the only one of the three I got to go to…I watched the other two on tv), some jackass Red Sox fan with his family and a few others was just past the checkpoint (you know, they ask you to tip your hat) and was barking about how they were “gonna get one tonight with Dice-K on the mound”.
We exchanged words and it ended with him calling me a “hillbilly”. Yeah, ok. Florida has no hills, I’m not named Billy, Will, William or Willy but ok, sure, I’ll take my University of Florida education, proper upbringing and presentable appearance and accept that I’m a hillbilly. If I’m a hillbilly, what’s that make a high school-educated, fat slob who runs his mouth in public Red Sox fan? A dirt bag? Thought so.
Now, I know this clown was not and is not typical of Red Sox fans. The vast majority of them have followed their team all their lives and their families are fans for generations. No problem. I get that. Afterall, there has been a team in Boston for more than 100 years, they have a tradition. It’s the new kid on the block, the one who bought the hat in October, 2004 and his girlfriend who bought the pink t-shirt in 2005 who piss everyone off because they don’t know crap about the game, don’t know crap about their team but sure as hell know how to yell and scream and generally piss people off with ignorance and and arrogance to match.
THAT is why America hates you Boston. It’s not the rings ON THE PLAYERS FINGERS, NOT YOUR FINGERS, it’s your stupidity, arrogance and hostility which goes with an INFERIORITY COMPLEX growing every year, winning or not.
Go Rays!
Hilarious
As good of a point as that is, it means nothing coming from a Rays fan.
Take a look at your archives, pal. 90% of the Rays fan base is a band-wagoner. Look at your 2007 threads, anywhere from 0-15 comments per thread. And now, what a coincidence, just as the Rays hop into first place, we’re seeing 30-60 comments consistently.
And the thing is, these Sox fans you’re describing match dead on with Rays fans. We’ve had 3 different lunatics from this board come down to Over the Monster trashing up our boards. I’d say thats at least as obnoxious as Sox fans.
I do agree with you, it’s just funny that this is coming from the DRaysBay.
The increased level of interest in the team this year is no secret
However I wouldn’t equate the team’s success with the level of participation on this site. Our growth came about before the results on the field started to turn out exceptionally well. We had close to 900 comments in our Opening Day thread, and our GDT comment levels have maintained a great level of activity ever since. Our previous site record for hits was set in May, and was only surpassed slightly by last month’s total.
Obviously Tampa Bay sees its share of bandwagoning fans, but they certainly don’t constitute anywhere close to the majority of our site’s users. I’m not going to speak for our users’ conduct on sister sites. Quite frankly, I don’t have jurisdiction over that, but more to the point, I simply don’t care. Randy runs a great site over there, and from our minimal dealings, he seems to be a very nice guy. Still, what happens over there is not my problem.
So, in summation, you’re wrong about the reason for this site’s growth, you’re wrong about the timetable for this site’s growth, and the manner in which you went about making your ignorance clear makes you the “lunatic”.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Jul 8, 2008 5:01 AM EDT up reply actions
You don’t have to care that some of your viewers are immature band wagoners. Of course you have no jurisdiction over that. I just think it’s funny that RaystheSail is insulting Sox fans when Rays fans are clearly just as bad in any given way.
Not a chance
The Nation is way larger and way more obnoxious. They’re called MassHoles for a reason…
Never heard that one before. Disagree on more obnoxious, but way larger yes. Again, how many incidents do you have of us invading your board? We’ve had 3 in June alone. I’m not here to complain about that, cuz I don’t give a rats ass to be honest, but you’re equally guilty of everything you insult Sox fans about.
Specifically from OTM, I can't recall any
Because that is a well-run community of respectable Red Sox fans. We have been inundated with some other Red Sox trolls from elsewhere in the past, but just as I’m sure you would insist that they aren’t representative of your fan base, the attacks at OTM aren’t representative of ours.
Listen, like it or not, the Red Sox fan base has developed a very poor reputation due to the abusive behavior of a lot of their fans. This is magnified since Boston has a traditionally large fan base. If you lived in this area and witnessed the behavior of Red Sox fans at the Trop, you would be appalled I’m sure. It goes both ways, definitely, but with a much larger fan base, the Sox stand to have more disgraceful fans, a lot of them bandwagoners.

“but just as I’m sure you would insist that they aren’t representative of your fan base, the attacks at OTM aren’t representative of ours.”
Thats just exactly my point. Those band wagoners aren’t any more representative of our fan base than the people who came to OTM represent yours.
But they exist in greater quantity
And as such, more people come into contact with these obnoxious Boston fans, lending to them the impression of a fanbase of jerks.
