RH Matt Garza, RAYS-Garza easily had his best start as a Ray last time out against the vaunted Texas Ranger offense, giving up just two runs on four hits over eight innings of baseball. The biggest thing that I and other non-fans took out of the start, however, was his strikeout to walk ratio. Through his first eight starts as a Ray, Garza had walked more batters than he had struck out, and the sustainability of that course is dubious. By striking out ten Rangers and walking just two, Garza not only showed the ability to exercise pinpoint control over his pitches, but he also showed for the first time since he was in a Minnesota uniform that he could dominate the game. The onus will be on him to continue this encouraging trend.
An interesting phenomenon with Garza this season has been his splits, which are pretty much the reverse of orthodoxy for pitchers. Garza has dominated lefty batters to the tune of .210/.307/.310, but right-handers are hitting .286/.343/.388 against him. His numbers showed this same stark contrast in 2006 in pretty much the same sample size, though his splits were normal in 2007. The Sox have a pretty balanced righty/lefty starting nine, so it will be interesting to see how this trend manifests itself tonight.
Garza will be making his third career start at Fenway Park this evening, with his two previous outings coming as a member of the Twins. He does have a 2.53 ERA in Beantown, albeit in just 10.2 innings pitched. This season, however, Garza has been significantly worse away from home. His respectable ERA overall is powered by a 2.40 ERA inside Tropicana Field, but in 22.1 innings pitched on the road, his ERA jumps significantly up to 5.64. It goes without saying that Garza will need to conquer his road woes.
Still, Garza's recent success is not to be discounted. He has made five quality starts in his last six outings after starting the season with three poor performances, including one against Boston. In that start, on April 25th in Tropicana Field, he gave up three runs in five innings. Garza most definitely needs to do a better job at keeping the ball down: his 1.06 G:F is not going to sustain a gain in HR/9 to 0.69 for very much longer. But if he can continue to set the pace of games with an improved strikeout rate and few walks, he will be a more-than-adequate No. 3 starter in the Rays' pursuit of a playoff appearance.

RH Justin Masterson, Boston-The Red Sox were to call up Masterson before the beginning of tonight's game to make a spot start in lieu of RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka, who will hit the DL with a rotator cuff strain. Masterson last pitched for Boston on May 20th, and was sent down the following day to make way for the returning Bartolo Colon. He made one previous spot start for the Red Sox this season before that, on April 24th against Los Angeles.
With Matsuzaka expected to be out for at least two weeks, Masterson could find himself making more than just this spot start, however. If he repeats the success of his first two outings, his tenure in a Boston uniform could continue through Matsuzaka's return. He has given up just one run in each of his first two major league starts, against the Angels and Royals, respectively. While it is virtually pointless to prognosticate based off of two major league starts, Masterson's weakness thus far has been a penchant for walking batters. He's walked seven in 12.1 innings thus far, the only deficiency evident in his major league service time.
The bulk of Masterson's playing time thus far has come for the Red Sox's AA affiliate in Portland, where he has made eight starts and posted a 4.23 ERA. He posted a 4.34 ERA in ten starts at the same level in 2007 after being promoted from High A. In 96.1 innings total at the Double A level, Masterson has struck out 96 batters while walking 34, a decent rate despite the ERA. He has always had a penchant for inducing groundballs, and consequentially he has always had very low home run rates.
When and if Masterson does return to the minor leagues, it will be to Triple A Pawtucket. Following his last spot start for the Red Sox, he was optioned to AAA Pawtucked and made one start there before being called up tonight. Given his success at the Major League level, there is no reason to believe that Masterson would be returned to Portland upon his return to the minors. He is by no means a top prospect, but he is a very serviceable option for the Sox to call upon when they need a spot start, and the best part is he is just 23 years old. He is most definitely not unbeatable in the present though, so here's hoping the Rays can take advantage of his weaknesses and bring his major league ERA into line.
Starting Lineups:
|
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Rays adapt to the absence of LF Carl Crawford by moving Eric Hinske from his usual spot in right field over to left, slotting in Gabe Gross as the right fielder. Hinske has experience playing the wall in Fenway as a member of the Red Sox last year, and the move has the dual benefit of obscuring his lack of range. To replace Crawford in the order, C Dioner Navarro and his high OBP move up to No. 2 in the order for the first time this year. Other than the Nos. 2, 7, and 8 spots, the regular lineup against RHP is in.
The Sox toss out their usual strong starting nine, with the exception of DL'd DH David Ortiz. Coco Crisp gets to play everyday as a result, and he will take over in center field. Moving to left is Jacoby Ellsbury, as the Sox take advantage of a hole at DH by moving defensively-challenged Manny Ramírez to the Designated Hitter position.
GO RAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CC then moves to the 9 spot
gets really pissed off after 14 games, and goes on a terror… taking a BB for every 3 SOs… Madden rewards him by granting him the leadoff spot again, and Aki moves to cleanup… Pena drops to 6th
Probably means he's day-to-day
and with the way he plays off the Monster, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Especially since Hinske has experience with LF at Fenway.

We better not pick this guy
48. Lance Lynn, RHP, Mississippi
What He Is: A massive right-hander (6’5”, 260).
What He’s Not: Massively overpowering.
In A Perfect World He Becomes: An innings-eater.
Backup Plan: A middle reliever who gets groundballs.
Open Issues: Size is issue with some, as he’s not just huge, he’s a bit dumpy; he doesn’t have a go-to big league offering and needs to change speeds and hit his spots.

Really? Everything I heard said that he's fine at SS, potentially worrying.
I know about his swing, but the way he turns his hips holds some potential, and at worst he’s a plus hitting 2B.
I just don’t think Posey is worth #1. I’d rather have Skipworth top of round two.

1. Tim Beckham, SS, Griffin HS (GA)
What He Is: That up-the-middle player who offers the best combination of tools and potential in the draft.
What He’s Not: A guy who grades out as well as the Upton brothers did, so let’s end those comps here and now.
In A Perfect World He Becomes: An All-Star shortstop who hits 20 home runs, steals 40 bases, and plays above-average defense
Backup Plan: Center field
Open Issues: Arguments remain over his ability to stay at shortstop-the athleticism is there, but his fundamentals are shaky-and ultimate power ceiling.
3. Buster Posey, C, Florida State
What He Is: An incredibly athletic catcher with a patient approach, decent power, and top-notch defensive potential.
What He’s Not: A true impact player.
In A Perfect World He Becomes: A Gold Glove catcher who hits .270-.290 with 15-20 home runs and 75 walks.
Backup Plan: He’s one of the safest picks around, so you don’t really need one, but he’s a pretty good infielder as well
Open Issues: He’s still new to catching, so while he has the potential to be great, he’s not there yet. His ultimate power ceiling ranges from just average to well-above, depending on who you talk to.
