"Rays first baseman Carlos Pena was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left index finger."

Ruggiano was recalled to take his place.

Well, this sucks.

Ruggiano better play this time up, otherwise we could’ve placed Dan Johnson on the roster and had him take over at first.

So...

Hinske/Aybar at 1st and Gross/Ruggaino in RF?

I would’ve liked to see Dan Johnson get the call too.

by Vin on Jun 4, 2008 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the call-up of Ruggiano because this should mean Hinske taking 1B and more playing time for Gross, probably a strict platoon with Ruggiano. Since the Rays are unable to find consistent playing time for Hinske, Floyd, and Gross all at once with the normal configuration this allows them to do so for a bit; bringing up Johnson would just muddle things further.

by Jim Wisinski on Jun 4, 2008 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

So, he breaks his finger, then proceeds to double and homer in his next two ABs? And we put him on the DL?

Where’s Jonny Gomes? I’ve got a hammer I’d like to use to shake his hand with.

by kericr on Jun 4, 2008 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

This hurts some. I know Pena has gotten a lot of crap from some for his offense this season but he still has a .272 EqA (MLB average for 1B is .278) thanks to his patience and power. Combined with good defense at first and whatever credit you think intangibles deserve and he was probably a player of average production despite the very low BA. The only positive is that maybe this time off can give him a break to get his swing totally back in line, it looked like he had fixed it all last week but then had a string of terrible games. Hopefully he’ll be productive again on a more permanent basis once he’s back.

It's not on Pena's glove hand.

man are we going to miss his glove at first, he could really pick it over there,

the man has saved at least 5-10 errors just by himself. this is bad news for us. CC better heal up quick, and Pena better be ready in 15 days.

On a side issue

Now he can FINALLY heal his hamstring as well. Gonna miss his defense, though…

I guess Dan Johnson is feeling silly right about now for accepting assignment to Durham.

If he isn’t going to get the call to replace Pena, he better hope for a trade or release.

Longlorious.

by RATW on Jun 4, 2008 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, definitely sucks for him

Though it probably sucks more to be John Rodriguez,

by GomesSweetGomes on Jun 4, 2008 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

But he hit well against MLB pitching in ST

and has shown the ability to hit at the big league level. I value that more than what he;s done in 85 AB’s at Durham.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jun 4, 2008 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

?

I guess you’re talling about the ST AB’s. I think his 300+ MLB AB’s say a lot about how he could hit in a platoon role in the bigs.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jun 4, 2008 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope.

Jeremy Owens did, he’s playing for an Atlantic League team.

Willy Mays Aikens that is. He’d be able to replace some of the chemistry lost in the dugout while Pena is on the DL.

It's a rainy ugly day in Boston.

Mr. Sunshine started to cry. So they put Mr. Sunshine on the DL.

“Where is the sun today?” Carlos said in a cold voice.
“It’s okay Carlos, they’ll be back” Joe spoke kindly as he gave Carlos a pat on the back.
“I don’t want to play if the sun is not out. I want to go on the DL so then, maybe, I will see sunny skies.”

SOUNDS LIKE THE HBP FIXED SOMETHING RATHER THAN HURT SOMETHING

Don’t you concentrate more with pain, amybe this was good for Pena, shoulda kept him from the DL.. Hinske should be full time 1b and Ruggiano should be full time RF end of discussion. Then when Pena returns, trade Hinske or Gomes

by Hazleton Jason on Jun 4, 2008 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Gabe Gross doesn't like you either.

Good I hate him

Gross has been an adequate 4th OF, but he isn’t starter material, and we won’t know if Ruggiano is unless he gets some AB’s and we can see if he can play defense…

Gross shouldn’t even be here, but I kicked that dead horse a lot long ago…

by Hazleton Jason on Jun 4, 2008 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

So Gross is exactly what they acquired him to be?

Amazing.

for a 4th outfielder… Don’t we have enough of those with Hinske and Gomes?

I don't think the Rays saw Josh Butler as a second round pick anymore.

And if we're going that route...

We traded a 2nd rd pick in his second year of A ball for a 1st rd pick with ML experience.

It really wasn’t a bad deal.

We have 5 or so OF now and no real 1b other than Hinske who kinda is a 1b… Maybe DJ should get a look

Gomes is disappointing.

By all means he could be our Manny, but he hasn’t played well enough that his defense is acceptable.

starting to come around on Gross. Glad to see he’s getting more playing time.

Also, for a guy who can’t hit lefties worth a damn, he certainly has a level enough swing to have at least some measure of success against them. Or at least thats what I’ve gathered from the few AB’s versus LHP I’ve seen thus far.

It does when you consider all the games/quarters he's missed the past 2 years

Plus his receiver skills are lacking. He can’t beat out a good CB on a jump ball

by GomesSweetGomes on Jun 4, 2008 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to disagree

If you saw the ball he beat out for a 50 yrd gain on a UT CB, you would agree with me. He has no problem beating out CB’s

by Cory Alexander on Jun 4, 2008 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I was there at every game last year

And the only deep balls Harvin typically catches are fade routes. Thats not to say he doesn’t have the ability to turn a 5 yard slant into a 50 yard gain. But he’s not going over the middle anytime soon.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jun 4, 2008 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, if you're going to look at one physical attribute

(Speed), and immediately use that lone attribute to say someone is the best player on their team, you have to be willing to discuss their physical limitations when evaluating their talents as well, no?

My comments about Harvin

Were really more geared towards the “Tebow isnt the best player on his own team”. I like Harvin, and find him more exciting to watch than Tebow when he has the ball, but do not consider him the best player on his team.

This is rediculous

He deserves a shot at the bigs I think his stats have earned it at this point. And Pena should keep playing considering what he did after he was hit. Maybe it fixed his swing.
