RH Edwin Jackson, RAYS-The enigma that is Edwin Jackson takes the hill for the Rays this evening, as they attempt to even up the series against Boston on national TV. He struggled last time out on Friday against the Chicago White Sox, having given up ten hits and two walks in six innings of work. He surrendered four runs in the outing, a number that surely would have been higher had it not been for his luck at getting double plays in critical situations.
Simply put, Jackson still gives up too many baserunners to sustain success. His K:BB is very much in line with the 1.45 total that he put up last year in a full season of duty with the Rays, and his G:F is actually lower than it has been in his past two seasons as a Devil Ray. The only stark difference for Jackson this year is that he has been giving up far fewer home runs. He has given up just 0.69 per nine innings this year, as opposed to 1.06 in 2007, despite him inducing fewer groundball outs.
Opposing teams just aren't plating as many runs against Jackson as they should be, and this trend was personified in his last start. Chicago had numerous opportunities to knock Jackson out of the game early, but in a problem that the Sox had all series, they just couldn't get runners in scoring position to the plate. Some would give Jackson credit for stymieing the Sox from getting more, but that ignores the greater trend that will pose problems for him in the future. He isn't getting out of these jams based on some intangible ability that he possesses, he is getting out of them due, in large part, to luck. Similarly, he isn't giving up as many home runs as he was last year for the same reason. You simply don't see your groundball rate drop, and then see your home run rate cut by 30% at the same time, at least in any long-term sample size.
The lesson here is simply that Jackson needs to tighten things up with regards to allowing baserunners, and he needs to induce more ground balls. The unfortunate news for Jackson is that he has to start doing that in Fenway Park, where he has an 8.47 ERA in 17 career innings pitched. That includes a May 2nd outing in Fenway, where he gave up six runs in four innings of work. To his credit, however, Jackson has shown the ability to tame the Red Sox's lineup before. That May 2nd start in Boston was his second straight against the Red Sox, and he surrendered just one run in seven innings at home in the first one, so maybe it was just a matter of the Sox being well-acquainted with him in a short period of time. No matter the reason, Jackson can take a big step forward towards making me a believer by having a successful, peripherally-sound start within the unfriendly confines of a division rival.

RH Josh Beckett, Boston-Don't let the ERA fool you, last year's runner-up for the Cy Young is just as dangerous as ever, and the Rays get to face him this evening at Fenway. Almost the entireity of Beckett's problems this year can be traced to his troubles with the long ball, as his strikeout rate is currently at a career-high. Couple that with a walk rate under two, and you have a pitcher that is just not getting any luck. Hitters aren't even really teeing off on him for a high average: his opponents' batting average of .238 this year is actually lower than the .250 mark he put up last year. Pitchers with 1.09 WHIPs don't usually find themselves with an ERA north of four, and yet that's exactly where Beckett finds himself.
So what's the problem? Gopheritis. Beckett is surrendering 1.48 HR/9, a total that hearkens back to his 2006 season, when he allowed 1.58 HR/9 en route to a 5.01 ERA in his first campaign with the Red Sox. Beckett just is allowing too many home runs, and in a league where the teams collectively live and die on the three run homer, you can't do that. He has an even G:F, so you can see where the problem has its roots.
The tendency is crystal-clear for Beckett: limit the long ball, and see tremendous success. In his masterful 2007 season, he gave up just 0.76 HR/9. Nearly double that rate, as in 2006, and you have a sub par performance. This problem has got to be especially frustrating for the Red Sox, since he is excelling in nearly every other statistical category by which you evaluate pitchers. He doesn't allow too many baserunners, but opposing teams have been able to take advantage of the instances in which he does via the home run. With men on, Beckett is being hit to the tune of .320/.366/.560, which is where his problems are. It's all situational.
The good news, so to speak, for Beckett and the Sox is that he has given up just four runs over his last two starts against Oakland and Baltimore. That follows a disastrous home start against the Milwaukee Brewers in which he gave up four home runs. The unfortunate news for Beckett is that he has struggled mightily in three home starts this season, posting a 5.40 ERA in 21.2 innings of work. His last "successful" home start at Fenway came against the Rays on May 3rd, when he gave up four runs in eight innings to earn a win. That followed what is, to date, his best start of the season at Tropicana Field, when he struck out 13 Rays in seven innings while surrendering just one earned run in an eventual loss.
So the Rays, having been tamed by Beckett before, know very well the pattern for success. When you get runners on base, you absolutely have to take advantage of them. If the Rays put up anywhere close to their usual total in the 'LOB' column, they will lose. Beckett simply doesn't allow that many baserunners, so you need to take advantage of the instances in which he does.
Starting Lineups:
|
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
With 1B Carlos Peña having been placed on the 15 Day DL due to a fractured index finger, the Rays have a different-looking lineup heading into tonight's game. Cliff Floyd moves into the cleanup spot in the lineup, while Dioner Navarro moves up a spot into the No. 6 hole. Gabe Gross takes over as the starting right fielder in place of Eric Hinske, who slides over to first base to take Peña's place. Hinske moves up in the order to take the No. 7 spot, while Gross will occupy the No. 8 hole.
Boston Manager Terry Francona throws out the same lineup today as he did for last night's game, with the exception of a swap between 1B Kevin Youkilis and RF J.D. Drew. Francona's rationale in making the switch was that Youkilis has struggled against Jackson, while Drew is starting to get hot. He is correct on both counts, with Drew hitting .412/.500/.824 since May 26th and Youkilis hitting .091/.286/.182 in 14 career plate appearances against Jackson.
GO RAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Tigers called up Casey Fossum this week. My first thought was, “Good lord, have they sunk that far?”
Fossum pitched today v. the A’s. 0 outs, 4 R, 4 H, all earned. Current ERA: 135.00.
