A starter short
Outside of Kaz and Shields, I think we can agree that rest of the Rays starting pitching is iffy.
Some have suggested going after names like Maddux or Lowe.
With the Seattle Mariners' implosion, Erick Bedard is someone who should become available soon. I imagine that with his team in the gutter and him under-performing, both sides might not want to be with each other anymore.
What would realistically be the price to acquire him? Brignac and McGee?

I have always liked bedard. I agree we are at least one starter short. It would be fantastic if we could deal for him, but I doubt it would happen.

Are we back to the days of "Kazmir and Shields, then off come the wheels"?
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

The last 3 are better then last year but the answer is still yes.
And this year the offense isn’t going to win to many 7-6 games.

The Answer is...
If the Rays are competing and want to make a trade for a pitcher there is one available, but it will cost. With the stockpile of Minor Leaguers in the Rays system, many will be playing in Durham in the near future for extended periods of time even though they’re M.L. ready. So the question is, do you go after a pitcher that’s a stud for rent the rest of the year and allow some younger players a shot at being with another club at the M.L. level rather than rotting in Durham or not?
C.C. Sabathia is on the market NOW! He would be a rent-a-player as he’s going to test the free agent market at the end of the season. His asking price is $150M. He will not remain a Ray if he is traded for. Is it worth getting a pitcher of his caliber to make a run at the playoffs and possibly winning the series?
Depending on what Indians GM Mark Shapiro asks for (I assume pitching) this can be doable for the Rays as we’re stockpiled in the Minors. The longer the Indians wait to ship Sabathia out, the less they’ll recieve as they realize they can’t afford his price tag.
Sometimes you just have to go for it! However, most GM’s and fans suffer from the old cliche’ “the fear of loss is greater than the desire for gain.”

I'd rather take a shot with the talent we have
and compete for years to come. There is so much talent in the system right now, I don’t see the need to be impatient a rent-a-player for a chance to make the playoffs this year.

the answer is no,
come on people, one or two bad times through the rotation and you’re jumping all over these guys. give me a break, the sky is not falling. ALL PITCHERS HAVE BAD OUTINGS, all of them, even the best ones. hell, Webb just had two bad outings in a row, if he was on our team you all would be screaming that we need to replace him. come on now, relax.

Overreaction seems typical nowadays.

At least there is a reaction
I guess

True.
But the only people’s job on the team that should be called for are Glover/Hammel at this point.

so our #3 and #4 have bad games back to back
and we are already mentioning Lowe and Maddux? Garza is better than your average #3, and Jackson still has an ERA under 4. Maybe you forgot about the 3 gems he pitched that the bullpen/offense blew for him? As a #4 Jackson is just fine. Why not send Glover down, move SOnny to the bullpen and call Niemann up before we make any trades?
Did everyone forget a) its only June 5 and 2) we have a handful of young pitchers on the verge of being ready to be pu tin the rotation
No reason to stray from the plan now.

It makes WAY more sense to trade for Brian Fuentes
Buster Olney mentioned on BBTN that Fuentes will be traded by the deadline. Someone mentioned the Yankees, but I see no reason why we wouldnt hve mroe to offer than the Yankees. Inluding a closer’s role for years to come for FUentes, and more prospects to choose from for Colorado

We may not be in the market
Because the front office thinks we have enough lhrp’s

true
but JP Howell, trever Miller and Kurt Birkins arent closer material
by blazinrayz on Jun 5, 2008 3:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
maybe Howell is
but he has not been pegged as a closer the way we know Fuentes is a closer

Proven closer are overrated.

Beane flipping Billy Taylor for Izzy is one of the most masterful jobs
Of using that idea to a team’s advantage.
