Draft Thread: Rest of Day One

Round 2, Pick 47: Kyle Lobstein LHP Coconino HS

Php4807f390bc545_medium

From the MLB.com draft profile :

A projectable lefty who has the chance to throw three at least average Major League pitches, he certainly will be watched closely all spring. A basketball player as well, Lobstein is athletic on the mound and has a free and easy delivery. He gets started a little late because of hoops, but if he throws as he's capable of as the season wears on, he could be one of the first high school lefties to be taken in June.

Other informational sources:

MLB Draft Source profile

From BA, appears he'll be a tough sign:

[A] rea scouts cautioned that it could take a seven-figure signing bonus to keep Lobstein from pitching (and hitting) for the Wildcats next spring.

Round 3 Pick 78 Jake Jefferies C UC Davis

Not on the map to start the season, Jefferies has had a tremendous junior campaign and has been steadily moving up the ladder all year. A terrific contact hitter who almost never strikes out, he hasn't shown much power. Defensively, he's pretty good, though the arm is fringy. Whichever team sees more arm or more power in the future will likely be the one to take him

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 4 Pick 113 Chris Morrison CF Tigard HS

Runs fast (4.32 to first), seems patient, has a good arm from what I can tell in the scouting vid. Lefty bat.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 5 Pick 143 Michael Sheridan 1B William and Mary

Line drive hitter, seems like an organizational bat more than anything, had a real nice junior season.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That wraps up day one, or not.

Round 6 Pick 173 Shane Dyer RHP South Mountain CC

Weird  mechanics, sits 85-91 with his fastball, loopy curve.

We go Catcher:

C, Jacob Jeffries, UC Davis

KG's take:

With no Posey, the Rays still get a college catcher with Jake Jeffries to kick off the third round. Jeffries is no Posey, but he’s got a nice line drive bat.

Actually

he’s a CFer with very good speed. The scouting report I’ve read said he’s above-average there too. Very weak frame. Needs to add a lot of bulk. Doesn’t make hard contact because of his lack of strength. Has a pretty swing, level, stays in the zone. Seems patient from the scouting video. Basically, he’s a project, but has good upside.

Another One From the Tribe

The Rays go to William & Mary once more. Last year, they drafted Greg Sexton and they previously traded for Brendan Harris. Evidently, they like the program.

Kevin Goldstein (5:10:52 PM PT): Peter (Tampa): Thoughts on rays draft? Seems like we got a solid player in every round, Lobstein looks to maybe be a factor, Beckham, if he can stick at SS, will be good, and Jeffries is a good project at Catcher. Thoughts?

Agreed. Even past Beckham, they’re doing quite well.

Where will Beckham start?

How long till we get him signed? I am really excited to see this kid develop.

Don't feel bad

I had the same feeling when LeBron got drafted and we were born a month apart.
