Draft Thread: Day Two

EDIT: Huge thanks to Tyler Marsh, the resident Tools Whore, for helping to find -- of all things -- statistics and bio on these players. Our draft coverage would've lacked quite a bit without Tyler today.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Picks will start coming in around 11:30, the Rays are first up, and this thread will be updated with pick by pick information.

One thing to watch for, Tim Beckham's brother, Jeremy Beckham, a second baseman out of Georgia Southern and former shortstop himself, very likely will land in the organization during the later rounds.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 7 Jason Corder RF Long Beach State University

.301/.356/.597 13 homers and 16 doubles last season.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 8 Anthony Scelfo 2B Tulane

.322/.453/.578 12 homers and 16 troubles out of the 5'10" 195 pound junior who was also a QB on the football team.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 9 Shawn Smith LHP Saugus HS

Looks like he sits mid-80's, which has Marsh stabbing himself in the hand.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 10 Matthew Hall 2B Auburn

Another junior, he hit .279/.342/.411last season.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 11 Bradley Furdal RHSP Ancaster HS

From the looks of it, there's nothing wrong with his arm. Committed to North High Point University.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 12 Brian Bryles CF North Little Rock HS

Great article on Bryles.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 13 Jason McEachern RHSP St.Stephens HS

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 14 Michael McKenna LF Florida Atlantic University

Enter text here.

.394/.463/.659 16 homers 15 doubles, All American and Sun Belt player of the year award winner.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 15 Brandon Meredith LF Montgomery HS

6'2", 225 pounds. Bat is fast, glove is bad. He's got some power potential though.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 16 Enter text here. Matt Gorgen RHP UC Berkeley

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 17 Jeremy Beckham 2B Ga. Southern

And here's the other half of the Beckham middle infield. If nothing else this is the protection to keep Tim away from tattoo parlors in Bradenton.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 18 David Genao C Oral Roberts

347/.454/.531

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 19 Trevor Shull RHP Central Valley HS

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 20 Jason Tweedy 2B LBSU

So, the Rays want second basemen apparently.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 21 Ryan Carpenter LHP Cactus HS

He's 6'5" and 205 pounds, take it away Baseball America...

Lefthander Ryan Carpenter throws harder now than Hunter, sitting 88-91 and touching 92 mph, and has a big pro body at 6-foot-5, 190 pounds. Another Gonzaga recruit, he had some high-strikeout starts that generated interest, but some scouts questioned Carpenter's competitiveness.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 22 Jason Appel OF UNC Willingham

21/24 steals, he's a 6'0" left handed hit .397/.467/.560 with 21 troubles and five homers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 23 Neil Schenk LHP Memphis

Reliever.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 24 Marquis Fleming RHP Cal St. Stanislaus

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 25 Josh Satow LHP Arizona State University

Only 5'10" 155 pounds, his numbers aren't pretty, and the A/C may knock him around.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 26 Michael Jarman LHP Oral Roberts

Only allowed one homer this season, otherwise I don't have much to say.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 27 Luis Marchena SS Otay Ranch HS

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 28 Thomas Rafferty RHP ASU

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 29 Brandon Magee CF Centennial HS

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 30 Ryan Turner RHP Midland College

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 31 Gregory Marshall LHP Moeller HS

Apparently will be an easy sign, hits 91 and has a good change.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 32 Kyle Gaedele RF Rolling Meadows HS

Another monster of a kid.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 33 Kyle Hunter LHP Galesburg HS

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 34 Matt Long RHP Cal State San Bernardino

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 35 James Bagley RHP San Jacinto Col North

Stats: 4.87 ERA, 57.33IP, 63H, 31ER, 20BB, 44K’s

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 36 Jordan Leyland 1B San Dimas HS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 37 Kramer Champlin RHP Olympia HS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 38 Anthony Haase RHP Rio Rancho HS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 39 Andrew Gans OF CORODNADO HS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 40 Sam Gaviligo RHP Ashland HS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 41 Brett Parsons 1B Navarro College

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 42 Timothy Clubb RHP Missouri State U

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 43 Robert Ross LHP Saddleback CC

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 44 Phil Pohl C Cooperstown Central HS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 45 Royce Bolinger RF Chaparral HS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 46 Jefferey Lease LHP American River College

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 47 Chris Matulis LHP Park Community HS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 48 Charles Guyer RHP Mercer U

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 49 Kash Kalowski RHP Grand Island HS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 50  Kyle Peterson C Hamilton HS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That completes the 2008 draft. Phew.

Anthony Sclefo:

TULANE: A two-sport athlete for the Green Wave in football and baseball… a returning letterwinner in football and a two-year letterwinner for Tulane in baseball… has pulled double-duty in spring football practice and playing baseball during the past two seasons… one of three players battling for the starting spot at quarterback leading into fall drills.

People will hate Sclefo for doing his job?

Triples+doubles

I’m not typing out the exact number when we have 40 more of these to do. I’m too lazy.

Brian Bryles

http://www.nwarktimes.com/adg/Sports/227785/

Bryles is similar to former North Little Rock center fielder D’Marcus Ingram, who went in the 25 th round to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006 and hit. 325 with 17 stolen bases in his first season of minor league ball.

Bryles has a quick swing and the ability to hit for average to go along with his natural speed. Bryles batted . 410 as a senior.

"Everybody I’ve talked to thinks Brian will go in the eighth round through the 15 th round," North Little Rock Coach Randy Sandefur said.

He also did some pitching.

I have not; looks like this was his first year in the SEC. His numbers are certainly less than impressive. Judging by his bio, it looks like he was much more highly-regarded coming out of high school.

Furdal

is my favorite second day pick so far. 87-89 with the fastball, with a projectable frame. Tight slider is a potentially above-average pick.

Probably just to make his transition easier. I'd imagine they'll room together

and Jeremy needs to keep his brother away from tattoos and cocaine.

Why did Pujols go to Maple Woods Community College?

College standing has little to do with future production.

by R.J. Anderson on Jun 6, 2008 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

completely different,

Pujols was drafted out of CC. this guy has gone to CC, and from there the best offer he could get is FIU, that’s not saying much.

by davidsmarch on Jun 6, 2008 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

You have no idea what his offers were, nor do I.

who, Pujols?

or Rembisz? cause if i’m a gambling man, i’m guessing that FIU was his best offer. if he had one to FSU, or UM, he probably would have taken it…

by davidsmarch on Jun 6, 2008 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Both.

The point stands that players go to smaller schools all the time and contribute.

i don't think that's true

i read that too, but then i read this: http://www.azdailysun.com/articles/2008/05/30/news/sports/20080530_sports_43.txt

from his hometown paper, it’s pretty much a direct quote of him saying “I basically said, ‘Maybe I would like to get drafted out of high school,’” Kyle said.”

i think if he had fallen past the 3rd, he might have gone to college, but going where he went i’m 99% sure he’ll sign, seeing as he wanted to get drafted out of high school as it was.

2007: Long was the No. 1 starter for the Coyotes, posting a 5-4 record with a team-leading 3.30 earned run average in 14 appearances, all starts. He had one complete game. He pitched 87 innings and struck out 89 batters. He was an all-CCAA honorable mention.

are signability concerns? any chance we throw a bunch of money at some good players to keep them from going to college.

It depends. Sometimes they just offer the guys slot if they take it so be it, if not move on. A majority of the guys from 30 on won’t sign. Maybe 5-10 of them will

i want to make an official request,

that someone on this site make a rays wallpaper. the two decent ones that are available now are just putrid. the one with the big sun shine thing in the middle is just too bright, lacks originality. the other one that says “Rays” is just boring. i want some awesome action shots, some player specific wallpapers, maybe a team photo wallpaper, something cool! come on guys, get to it!

that's pretty sweet

thanks for posting it.

does it not strike anyone else as weird that apparent lack of quality wallpapers for the rays? when the bucs are in season, ever person on the team has their own. there are at least 3 or 4 season schedule wallpapers, and an abundance of other random player pictures that are converted to wallpapers. we, on the other hand, seem to be stuck with the garbage the rays put out and nothing more.
