Maddon
is intent on resting players whenever possible. It does not make a team worse to rest players or use the whole roster; on the contrary, it makes the team better even if in a particular game it might appear to weaken the lineup. They are all major leaguers and can contribute on any given day, so the point is to keep everyone at top shape for the long haul. Maddon is strengthening the team.
What surprised me is that he has Ruggiano in CF and Gross in RF rather than the reverse.
Also: Dontrelle Willis is really fucking bad.

What possible reason would you have for wanting him to hit the ball with less power? If a player has just enoug power to barely clear the fence that means they’re hitting a lot of warning track flyballs too that don’t leave the park. Which means less homeruns overall.
The further it’s hit, the better.

I have a feeling that many of you jumped right into your mathematics PHD without taking reading comprehension 101. When did I say I wanted him to hit the ball shorter? Are you that illiterate? In fact I actually said he needs to hit the ball longer. Of course since many of you seem to have skipped the course on reading comprehension course at your local university you failed to pick up on that. It is either that or many of you just do not know baseball. Do you realize that a fly ball to the warning track is an “out” whereas a ball that barely goes over is a home run. One of those scenarios gives your team at least 1 run. A “run” in baseball is a good thing, an “out” is a bad thing. I hope you realize that. The goal in a baseball game is to score the most runs. So many of you either need to go back to the basics of reading comprehension or learn the game of baseball. My guess is many of you realize the basic idea behind baseball so I think it is just a reading comprehension problem. I’ll break it down into a form some of you may understand batted ball + air + inside glove = out out = bad ball + air + over + fence = home run home run = good good > bad

Thats all pretty, but I’m willing to bet that the last pitch of the vast majority of his at bats take place in the counts with the lower OPS. If anything it proves my point that he should be swinging earlier in the count and in hitters counts.

Actually most people share this opinion. This is the first place I’ve ever heard of people actually advocating that someone not ever swing until they throw a strike. This is MLB, not little league. We would get slaughtered nearly every game if out hitters walked up there not swinging until they threw a strike.

If you say so. I tend to agree with people that are involved with the game. The numbers and basic common sense bear it out. It makes no sense to purposefully get behind in the count. If a pitcher is any good he’ll throw 65 percent strikes, which is certainly higher when they know you won’t swing. So a conservative estimate would be a player that never swings at the first strike will start 0-1 70 to 75 percent of the time. That just isn’t a recipe for success. Obviously Evan isn’t like that. He actually has been improving lately.
So he should swing at the first pitch 65% of the time?

I didn’t say he should always swing, or even swing at the majority of strikes. I’ve said that he needs to at least have a possibility that he may swing the bat at a strike. Please read what I’m saying.
While I agree that one should swing at the first pitch at times, I also believe one should swing at it based on the pitch's merit.
Evan seems to be doing that, so what’s the problem?

Thats exactly what I’m saying and thats exactly what Evan is not doing. He has essentially been giving the pitcher the first strike. He has been improving, but there was a stretch where he just would not swing until a strike was thrown. And I also didn’t say “swing at the first pitch” i said sometimes you swing at the first STRIKE. Again that is a big difference.
He swings 1st pitch 30% of the time, B.J. swings 32%

He remained patient, waited for his pitch, didn’t get it, worked the count, and got on base while driving up Saunders’ PC.
Just a FYI, I didn’t say that he shouldn’t work the count or be patient. I said that he shouldn’t concede the first strike. Big difference between the two.

Sure. Of course there are times where you should take. But it seems like he walks up there with the intent of not swinging until they throw a strike. If I can tell, Maddon can tell, and then certainly the opposing scouts and pitchers can tell. It is something he needs to fix. He has a great eye and he should be selective. But he isn’t a guy with a high contact rate, so if he sees a great pitch to hit then he should pull the trigger regardless of the count.
CC on the other hand swings at bad pitches, or strikes that he cannot drive. By no means am I saying Evan should do that. Absolutely not.
But swinging at balls is bad.

You shouldn’t take until a strike unless the guy has serious control issues. Evan has a habit of not swinging at the first strike. The first strike is historically the best strike you will see. I’m not saying he should swing at balls, or swing at bad strikes. It just seems he goes up there with the intent of not even trying to swing until he throws a strike. He is just giving up a prime opportunity to hit a good pitch. If he doesn’t like the pitch I don’t want him swinging. I just don’t want him to give up a strike.

If he likes the pitch he should swing. I don’t have a problem with his approach once he has a strike. My problem is that he is giving them 1 free strike most at bats. Joe Maddon was actually talking about this the other day. If he was a supreme contact hitter then I wouldn’t mind him getting to two strikes this often. But he isn’t yet. So why not take an extra hack at a good pitch?

No he doesn’t. Honestly RJ that is pretty absurd to claim more strikes are better. There is no way on earth that 0-1 is better than 0-0 or 0-2 is better than 0-1. Less strikes is always preferred to more strikes.

No I’m not. Right now Longoria is conceding the first strike in almost all at bats. If I walked up there right now and threw a strike Longoria would be down in the count 0-1 against me. There is no need to do that on a consistent basis. If the pitcher knows you are taking then that is a pretty easy pitch for him to make. There at least needs to be a fear of Longoria swinging 0-0 or 1-0. The good pitchers are putting him down 0-1 early in the count. That puts Longoria far behind (take a look at your own OPS numbers). If he occasionally would swing early in the count it would at least put the thought into the pitchers mind that he may swing. Then they wouldn’t just grove a pitch down the middle.

Part of the Ryan express; Reid and Ryan Owen combined to close out games for Columbus. Reid is only 5’11" and his fastball sits around 89-91 with the chance to scatter towards the mid 90’s, he has a plus slider, but not much else, good mechanics and that fearless mindset to go after hitters. Certainly he had success last season, but the question becomes if he can duplicate the same success against higher level hitters who won’t be tricked as easily, if so the Rays are looking at a future big league reliever, if not he’ll drop by the waistline quickly.

I've never seen anything on that.
You figure using a play by play database you could somehow cut it down to situations where a runner is on first who has a 70% steal rate and at least 20 steals or something like that, but I’m not capable of doing so.

I like Manny but find it
hard to root for him cuz of his team and their fans. Also my friend has this hilarious story of Manny not signing for him when he was with the Indians and it just crushed my friends dream. lol
