If we lived in a red world Garza would look pissed all the time. If he has an MVP-type performance tonight then we win. So that’s who I’m going with.

MVP (Are you ready for this?): Aki!!!

Wakefield is a tough cookie and tonight’s lead-off hitter is .421 off him (19 ABs) and is likely itching to get back into the action – and against the Sox, no less.

not as good as salas,

or as niemann in the pen…

by davidsmarch on Jul 1, 2008 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Niemann worries me in the pen.

He is so large and he throws a good fast ball, he may not get all his gears in motion in the time frame that the Rays would need. See Mark Hendrickson for examples. But, if they bring Niemann I say the heat would be on Ejax or Sonny to do better. More to the tune of Ejax.

I like what they're doing

Two potential 30 goal scorers is nice. We need some “pretty good players”, it’s something the Bolts have lacked. But they still need to shore up the D.

by kericr on Jul 1, 2008 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tons of young D on the team though

Boyle/Ranger are locks, Kuba is meh, then you have Smaby, Mihalik, Lundin, Picard, O’Brien, ect. and I think Doug Janik is still in the system.

Apparently Gary Roberts called Mats Sundin, but I can’t see that happening.

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 1, 2008 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but young 'D' is sloppy, and we saw that last year.

They’re signing people like they want to win now. It’s a lot harder to win in the NHL by trying to outscore everybody than it is trying to play solid D. Tortorella won the cup with great D, a good goalie, and good, but not great offense. This team looks like a killer offense with the same seive D that we’ve had the last few years. I’m cautiously optimistic.

Depends

If some of these new forwards, and I don’t know about Vrbata, but I’ll assume Malone/Hall/Roberts will help, can play more on defense I think we could quickly improve that spectrum as well.

Of course it’s very possible they go out and sign a defender or two as well, too bad Commodore went elsewhere.

Except Lugo

You never hear anything about him since he’s been in Boston.

I want Jason Bay

He will be fine in RF. We have been playing 1B/3B there most of the season. I will take Bay and Fuentes and pass on Sabathia.

I'm not so sure about Fuentes

I’d like to trade for Bay, though

Last I heard we weren't in the Fuentes race.

I don’t see us dealing for a name like Bay.

Nady/Murton seem to make more sense.

Buster Olney seems to think

Brewers and Rays are the front runners for Sabathia. I, however, don’t see either team making a trade like that.

It would cost a lot of prospects for a half of year of service and

2 top first round picks. Interesting, very interesting.

I firmly believe

that if the Rays trade away a bunch of stuff for Sabbathia, they will only do so if they can sign him in return. They’ll have to spend tons of money to do it, but if they can, they’ll pull the trigger if they think he’s worth it.

We have the prospects, but

The FO doesn’t want to deal high-level prospects for a rental
