Street/Murton? Probably Not...
Yes, I'm totally piggybacking off of this fanshot because I haven't been around for the last 12 or so hours, but as you can imagine the idea of landing Huston Street and Matt Murton in one deal very soon excites me very, very much.
Those two make a ton of sense for the Rays, and let me just list my points here:
1) Huston freaking Street! Relief ace, 24 years old, two more years under team control. His name is Huston Street! Frankly I may giggle from excitement if we do land him for quite a while.
2) I really, really, really like Huston Street.
3) Murton makes a ton of sense.
4) STREET!
5) The idea of this deal makes too much sense.
6) HUSTON STREET!
That is all until we find out more.

Street sure, Murton, why?
He hits 60% of his balls in play on the ground and has 15 XBH in 231 at bats this year. That is not going to help produce any runs. The best thing I can say about him is that he makes a lot of contact but he’d have to hit 7th or 8th in the lineup because he’d be a double play machine if he hit up in the 2 hole where most high contact hitters live.
What stats are you looking at?
Mine show only 40 AB’s for Murton this year

Minor league #'s?
If so, I’ll put more stock in what he’s shown at the major league level. Lou Pinella did a really good job at making Upton look like a scrub as well…Don’t discount the ‘messsin with the head’ factor here.
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 11, 2008 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions
In 870 major league at bats
56% GB rate. Unless you are a speedy, those are not good numbers for a corner outfielder position. They’re Delmon Young like – which is why he was below replacement level last year.
If Murton were here, he’d be hitting out of the 8 hole platooning with Gross/Hinske in RF.
by Jason Collette on Jul 11, 2008 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Which is what the Rays are likely targeting
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 11, 2008 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Based on his l/r splits
Against lefties, he’s Delmon Young with a higher average and more power (about .80 points of OPS higher)
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 11, 2008 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions
what about in previous years? and is there a chance the stupid Cubs organization is working on cutting down his K's or something dumb like that?
He has always been a GB hitter
2006 – 455 major league at bats – 56% GB; 2.4 G/F
2007 – 235 major league at bats – 47% GB, 1.2 G/F – and still slugged lower than he did in 2006.
Murton has always made solid contact and has been double digit walk rate for his career. Something in his approach has always generated more grounders than flyballs and because he isn’t fast enough to take advantage of it, it has resulted in a rather pedestrian major league career when given the chance.

Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.
Street >>> Fuentes, Others
I like Fuentes, but given a bullpen that already has depth, a lights-out ace is much more valuable than another 3.75 ERA guy.
What’s the outlook on Street’s health?
Is the consensus that Murton is still an above-average corner outfielder?

What do we think Hinske will do the rest of the way?
.262/.354/.520 first half, which seems to be backed up by the batted ball numbers. But he’s never had an OPS+ above 120 before and owns a career 101 OPS+. Murton’s better than Hinske’s 2008 projection (and can play defense), but if Hinske has made real changes, he deserves the at-bats.
Best case scenario might be to acquire Murton with Street and flip Hinske.
I think that's what they'll attempt to do.

why again is anyone excited about Murton?
he was never that amazing in the minors, and thoroughly dissapointed in his ML stint this year. why is he in any way an upgrade over anything we’ve got/could easily get?
how does he make sense?
if make sense=can play outfield, then yes he makes sense. but there are much better options out there. hell, baldelli is probably a better option.
Ted Williams is a better option
But he’s not going to step on the field, either.
Murton hits lefties, has a better pre-2008 offensive track record, and plays better defense. Those are the pluses. I agree they aren’t huge.
so combine Murton and Gross and we have one very complete player?
is that what we’re going for? no thanks.
nothing against the platoon, but if we’re trading for a RF, i’d rather he be an every day player.
Trading for a platoon player..
That does his job well, combined with another platoon player that does his job well…well, you dont have to give up as much in a trade, and in the end, get similar value.

They were trying to develop...
Power pitchers. And they wanted them to be aggressive and throw strikes. I guess it made sense for the young kids out of hs, but I was fresh out of college and much further along, plus I didnt bring a lot of heat so it killed me. Not too mention the other teams knew we were doing it. Dick Williams son, Bob, was the Director of Player Development and he made sure we did it. I didnt think the league wasall that tough. I actually thought the Cape was more difficult then the NYP, but them’s the breaks I guess. It was a dumbass philosophy though.
To a degree...
I would think only for kids straight out of hs, or some of the Latin guys. Otherwise, it sucked for me. My first 2 outings I had 5 perfect innings. But me and the catcher(Lovelady) both had gotten there late and didnt know about this philosophy. They promptly informed us and my season went to shit real quick.

3. Huston Street, A’s closer. General manager Billy Beane proved once again Tuesday that he’s willing to trade anyone at anytime. While the package going to the A’s for Harden seems underwhelming in that outfielders Matt Murton and Eric Patterson haven’t shown themselves to be stars in the making, consider that Sean Gallagher is a young starter under the team’s control and young Josh Donaldson is that rarest of catching commodities. And consider, too, that Harden’s spotty health history has made many teams shy away for years. Street has no such issues, and could become a pennant changer for someone. Odds for a deal: 3 to 1.

Who do you think it’ll be? I have a feeling Beane is fed up with Crosby and would love Brignac.
Somehow I think that Beane is smart enough to know he can get more than Brignac for these guys
But Brignac would likely be part of the deal.
But
Would you guys be okay with giving up a SP and a SS for a reliever? Granted a good young closer, but still.
Brignac seems to have no future whatsoever for this ballclub
Between Bartlett now and Beckham just being drafted and expected to be ready relatively quickly, and Brignac allegedly having been ready for the last year+, he’s squeezed.
Yeah, I really would be
SP shouldn’t be a need in this organization for a long time. And we just drafted beckham, so…
In a longhorn minute!

So if this deal were to happen...
Would you consider yourself done, or then go after a bat?
I'm not sure we'd have room for another bat.

Floyd should really go.
I hate to say it, but Hinske doesn’t need to be in the field at all anymore and I really, really want Gross to get more AB’s.
Interesting question
The Rays need offense but I don’t know where they can get it from. Obviously, if they manage to pick up an everyday right fielder who can hit, that’s good, but I personally believe that it’s not enough. Upton’s power numbers are down quite a bit from last year; and I don’t think anybody expected it. CC has been asleep at the wheel for the first half of the season, Pena has been off but it looks like he’s beginning to get things going, and even though he was below average at SS, Brendan Harris did bring lots of offense to that position, Bartlett on the other hand, has been the polar opposite.
But who, amongst these guys, can we really replace without downgrading? Pretty much any replacement player that is an offensive upgrade is going to also be a defensive downgrade; since this team’s success has been focused around defense and pitching, replacing any of them is breaking the formula thus far that has made this team successful.
I'd like to hope it's true and that his problem is fixable
At the same time, without power, he’s still showing himself capable in CF. Losing him would be devistating.
lol
now i see this rumor all over because of you guys. this deal better happen, or youll have to personally call friedman and beg him
nah
just saw some guys talking about how they heard it independently on metsgeek
saying they heard sonnanstine was involved, but i highly doubt that
Can you ask where?
Bendix egged me on in hoping this was real.

from Baseball Toaster today
Asked if dealing Harden might lead to more trades involving players such as Joe Blanton or Huston Street, Beane responded: ” ‘No’ is probably the quickest answer.” But he added: “I think you have to look at (possible deals) independently.”

I like the idea of Street, but we have no need for Murton
He is not really much of an upgrade over Ruggiano and/or Gomes. Not worth giving up anything more than Ruggiano + a really bad prospect.
If Ruggiano isn't up for good after the trade deadline
Then I think its safe to say he has virtually no future with the team.
I agree.
Which is why I’m still pretty adamant that we won’t deal for a RH RF’er. Friedman just seems too smart to toss Ruggiano aside like that.
Hell, I don’t even see the need for a RH DH while we still have Aybar.
Yeah.
Targeting a certain audience maybe?
