Street/Murton? Probably Not...

Yes, I'm totally piggybacking off of this fanshot because I haven't been around for the last 12 or so hours, but as you can imagine the idea of landing Huston Street and Matt Murton in one deal very soon excites me very, very much.

Those two make a ton of sense for the Rays, and let me just list my points here:

1) Huston freaking Street! Relief ace, 24 years old, two more years under team control. His name is Huston Street! Frankly I may giggle from excitement if we do land him for quite a while.

2)  I really, really, really like Huston Street.

3) Murton makes a ton of sense.

4) STREET!

5) The idea of this deal makes too much sense.

6) HUSTON STREET!

That is all until we find out more.

Maybe

But wouldn’t you be happy to get Street/Murton at that cost?

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 11, 2008 2:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dunno....

I watched the Cardinal’s trade away Harren for Mark Mulder….look how that worked out for everybody

A’s have always left a bad taste in my mouth after that.

I hope it happens

and it looks as if we wouldnt have to sell the farm considering what the A’s got for Harden

Street sure, Murton, why?

He hits 60% of his balls in play on the ground and has 15 XBH in 231 at bats this year. That is not going to help produce any runs. The best thing I can say about him is that he makes a lot of contact but he’d have to hit 7th or 8th in the lineup because he’d be a double play machine if he hit up in the 2 hole where most high contact hitters live.

by Jason Collette on Jul 11, 2008 1:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What stats are you looking at?

Mine show only 40 AB’s for Murton this year

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 11, 2008 1:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

combine AAA and Maj

fangraphs.com

you can go to minorleaguesplits.com to get G/L/F for his work in AAA. 109 GB out of 169 total balls in play

by Jason Collette on Jul 11, 2008 1:36 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Minor league #'s?

If so, I’ll put more stock in what he’s shown at the major league level. Lou Pinella did a really good job at making Upton look like a scrub as well…Don’t discount the ‘messsin with the head’ factor here.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 11, 2008 1:37 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

In 870 major league at bats

56% GB rate. Unless you are a speedy, those are not good numbers for a corner outfielder position. They’re Delmon Young like – which is why he was below replacement level last year.

If Murton were here, he’d be hitting out of the 8 hole platooning with Gross/Hinske in RF.

by Jason Collette on Jul 11, 2008 1:43 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Based on his l/r splits

Against lefties, he’s Delmon Young with a higher average and more power (about .80 points of OPS higher)

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 11, 2008 1:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He has always been a GB hitter

2006 – 455 major league at bats – 56% GB; 2.4 G/F
2007 – 235 major league at bats – 47% GB, 1.2 G/F – and still slugged lower than he did in 2006.

Murton has always made solid contact and has been double digit walk rate for his career. Something in his approach has always generated more grounders than flyballs and because he isn’t fast enough to take advantage of it, it has resulted in a rather pedestrian major league career when given the chance.

We need a bat, not an arm

Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; but if a thing is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

by Orlando Rays on Jul 11, 2008 1:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Street >>> Fuentes, Others

I like Fuentes, but given a bullpen that already has depth, a lights-out ace is much more valuable than another 3.75 ERA guy.

What’s the outlook on Street’s health?

Is the consensus that Murton is still an above-average corner outfielder?

Cartman: Butters, do you think 9/11 was just a plot by some angry terrorists, or do you think there was some kind of coverup?
Butters: Well, I heard that 9/11 was caused by President Bush.
Cartman: Aha! Do you see?
Kyle: Where did you hear that??
Butters: [points] From Eric.
Cartman: I rest my case.

Nope

None of the usual suspects have it, and I even did a google news search.

by rglass44 on Jul 11, 2008 1:41 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What do we think Hinske will do the rest of the way?

.262/.354/.520 first half, which seems to be backed up by the batted ball numbers. But he’s never had an OPS+ above 120 before and owns a career 101 OPS+. Murton’s better than Hinske’s 2008 projection (and can play defense), but if Hinske has made real changes, he deserves the at-bats.

Best case scenario might be to acquire Murton with Street and flip Hinske.

by Sky Kalkman on Jul 11, 2008 1:53 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why again is anyone excited about Murton?

he was never that amazing in the minors, and thoroughly dissapointed in his ML stint this year. why is he in any way an upgrade over anything we’ve got/could easily get?

by davidsmarch on Jul 11, 2008 2:27 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

how does he make sense?

if make sense=can play outfield, then yes he makes sense. but there are much better options out there. hell, baldelli is probably a better option.

by davidsmarch on Jul 11, 2008 2:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ted Williams is a better option

But he’s not going to step on the field, either.

Murton hits lefties, has a better pre-2008 offensive track record, and plays better defense. Those are the pluses. I agree they aren’t huge.

by Sky Kalkman on Jul 11, 2008 2:43 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

so combine Murton and Gross and we have one very complete player?

is that what we’re going for? no thanks.

nothing against the platoon, but if we’re trading for a RF, i’d rather he be an every day player.

by davidsmarch on Jul 11, 2008 2:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Trading for a platoon player..

That does his job well, combined with another platoon player that does his job well…well, you dont have to give up as much in a trade, and in the end, get similar value.

How’s this for a college infield. Cannizaro at SS, Utley at 2nd, and Garret Atkins at 1B. We had a solid squad.

Unfortunately not. My minor league career crapped out quickly with shoulder problems. In fact, I probably played with better player in the Cape Cod League then in the early level of pro ball.

They were trying to develop...

Power pitchers. And they wanted them to be aggressive and throw strikes. I guess it made sense for the young kids out of hs, but I was fresh out of college and much further along, plus I didnt bring a lot of heat so it killed me. Not too mention the other teams knew we were doing it. Dick Williams son, Bob, was the Director of Player Development and he made sure we did it. I didnt think the league wasall that tough. I actually thought the Cape was more difficult then the NYP, but them’s the breaks I guess. It was a dumbass philosophy though.

by td32 on Jul 11, 2008 3:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

To a degree...

I would think only for kids straight out of hs, or some of the Latin guys. Otherwise, it sucked for me. My first 2 outings I had 5 perfect innings. But me and the catcher(Lovelady) both had gotten there late and didnt know about this philosophy. They promptly informed us and my season went to shit real quick.

by td32 on Jul 11, 2008 4:09 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You know

I am sad a catcher named Lovelady never made it to the bigs.

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 11, 2008 4:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm surprised you dont remember him...

He was the catcher at Miami with HUGE chops, and they were in the World Series every year, and he was their face. ESPN would show him constantly. He wasnt very good, but great guy that is coaching college ball in Ohio now.
But yes, outstanding name.

by td32 on Jul 11, 2008 4:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also Murton’s EqA is higher than Baldelli’s and doesn’t have a mysterious illness.

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 11, 2008 2:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Talib Kweli

The Roots suck, IMO

Ever listened to Illmatic? Greatest rap album ever. No Wu-Tang? I’m surprised you didn’t say Jedi Mind Tricks I always lump them in with that group you listed.

I like Illmatic, and still play it from time to time

But Nas started to suck when he became self-aware. And I’m not as big a fan of Jedi Mind Tricks

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 11, 2008 2:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

In the same vein

Reasonable Doubt was an awesome album as well…They both got overproduced over time. Not every rap has to have a well known beat ripped…Originality made them who they were, and they both lost a lot of that over time.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 11, 2008 2:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And don't knock the Roots till you see their live show
