Rumor Central....

First trade attempt for Holliday fails. Not sure who it was, most likely A's. Reportedly the Rays have inquired about both Willie Mo Pena and Marcus Thames if they cannot land Nady or Murton. Not hot on either one but they are both RH with some good power if they play regularly. Thames actually having a decent year but Tigers looking to go diff. direction and Pena is basically being pushed out in Wash. so either may come relatively cheap. Any thoughts??

DO NOT WANT

I'd rather not have either.

Thames only asset is his power.

I’d much rather have Murton.

i would love marcus thames as a ray since his bat is so powerful

i dont really think that he would cost that much, maybe niemann? and btw the rockies tried to trade holliday to the mets but they wanted to try and trade willy taveras for carlos beltran and fernando martinez

Oh sh-t!!!..

Met’s trying to dump Beltran’s salary…

espn.com and then go to MLB and then the rumor mill will explain it all

if they want that much for holliday/taveras then i dont think that andrew friedman should even answer the phone if they call him.

Willy Mo Pena?

Where’d you hear this “rumor”?

The guy has a torn rotator cuff and fraying of the labrum in his left shoulder. I seriously doubt there’s any talks to acquire him. Not only that but:

1 – He has an MLB-only contract. There’s no flexibility to send him down in case he slumps, like he has his entire career.

2 – He sucks as a defender. He makes Gomes look competent.

3 – He’s always hurt.

It doesn’t at all sound like a fit for the Rays.

by floridaroar on Jul 17, 2008 6:33 AM EDT reply actions

It's not an MLB only contract

There’s no such thing. His original contract was a ML deal. Just like David Price, Delmon Young, Rick Porcello, Jered Weaver and many other amateurs have signed. The difference was he was a raw 16 year old when he signed his deal. He was out of options by the time he was 21. Rather than sending him to the minors (which would require him to clear waivers, and that wasn’t happening) Cincy kept him on the big league roster.

It’s the same deal now, just like Hammel, Wily Mo is out of options and to be sent down, would have to clear waivers.

Thames would be nice.

He’s ideal as a pinch hitter or platooning RF/1B. I could see him fitting in nicely for the right price.

If we’re going to deal with the TIgers, I’d rather work out something for Inge where they pick up some of his salary. That guy is a player. He is a top notch defender and can play almost any position well (3B, RF, 1B, C).

Your post is dubious at best without a link, but

the A’s trading for Holliday goes so far against the grain that I have to ask what have you been huffing? I know it is not gasoline, because of the high costs so I am going to go with gold spray paint in a plastic bag.

Wipe off your face, take a shower, and then explain to me how the A’s trading for Matt Holliday makes any sense to you whatsoever.

First of you don't need to get rude

Try reading some other blogs and try espn.com and MLB .com and then check back. Buster Olney had mentioned A’s so tell him he’s huffing..I said I wasn’t sure..It ended up being Mets which was posted on ESPN insider AFTER I POSTED THIS. Pena and Thames were off a web board a friend of mine (Joe Strauss) that writes for St.Louis Post Dispatch runs. Sorry I didn’t post the link but hey..IT’S A RUMOR POST..NEVER SAID IT WAS HAPPENING…I didn’t call the person that posted it a liar so you shouldn’t shoot the messenger…..Calm the hell down.

by arkansasraysfan on Jul 17, 2008 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll go and try to find the exact link so everyone calms down.

I thought putting it was a rumor at the top of the post would mean it is “speculation”..that’s what rumors are. I’m sorry RJ..I guess not everyone is as clear on things as you are. I did post the link for the Holliday trade though….

by arkansasraysfan on Jul 17, 2008 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Generally we go with the idea that rumors are things reported in the press

Or stuff that would be posted on MLBTr.

I tend to avoid noting something that is either an idea or unfounded speculation as a “rumor” because it usually doesn’t end well.

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 17, 2008 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess I am sick of unfounded rumors in general

I apologize for taking it out on you, but on the same hand how much of this nonsense have you perpetuated yourself. I am sure you are just as big of a baseball nut as myself, but when you have a thought, keep it inside, think about it, mull it over, then maybe make a post. I could just as easily say something like James Shields recently decided he is no longer going to throw the change, because his mentor is teaching him the Fossum Flip. Absolute nonsense, for sure, but when you see it on a credible source it makes some people sit up and say wow that is amazing I cannot believe that. In related news a friend told me about this one website (can’t remember the name) that said Barry Bonds and Jose Canseco have both agreed to platoon as our DH. Barry said that at first he was uncomfortable playing with a guy that has written books trying to discredit him, but after he saw Jose “hit some dingers” he was willing to deal with it.

I understand..Again my apologies..but I have no reason to post something

..I spun off the top of my head. They were not my thoughts or feelings. I am a die hard Rays fan and I understand your frustration but what I posted was no where near those fabrications you posted as an “example”. I would never post anything that was completely unfounded like that. I have posted 2 sources now about the Holliday trade for you. I assure you I don’t huff any gas/drugs and to be honest I was quite offended by that remark as my uncle died of asphyxiation from gas fumes (Yes, he committed suicide) so I ask that you consider your responses somewhat more carefully because what I posted may have upset you, your response actually UPSET me.

Talk to Ken Rosenthal and then go to ESPN. com and check the Insider and if that isn’t enough maybe Matt Holiday telling reporters he’s heard it and isn’t worrying about that stuff right now might be enough.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Athletics, Phillies
By Nat Boyle [June 22, 2008 at 9:28am CST]

From his Full Count video update, Ken Rosenthal brings us a couple bullet points:

  • In contention, the A’s suddenly could become a buyer. Rosenthal cites the big names: Matt Holliday, Jason Bay or even C.C. Sabathia, and that the A’s certainly have the prospects to pull it off.
  • The Phillies could enter the mix for Sabathia as well; however, they’d have to give up top pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco. Carrasco is the top rated Phillies prospect for the second straight year by Baseball America.

Here's another one...

Jul 16, 2008
News: Athletics | Team in mix for Holliday? Impact: The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser and John Shea report Colorado Rockies OF Matt Holliday has heard the Oakland Athletics mentioned in trade speculation for him. (KFFL, 10:32AM)

Sorry but I don’t post stuff without any research.. Sorry about the Pena/Thames part of the posy but it was a reliable source (Cards team beat writer on trade rumors) posting to a news paper online sports section. Willie Mo is probably done now for the year and maybe forever now anyway with a torn rotator cuff. Thames is being shopped and the Rays have inquired as to what they want..but then again so have 10 other teams probably. I apologize to any and all I may have upset but I was trying to pass along info I heard to see what your thoughts were. I have come to realize that a few of you may not understand that I was trying to provide info. that I have found as fodder for talk. It is reliable and because it is not directly from the source it is speculation/rumor and posted as such. I have read other peoples posts on here that were speculation and all they got were thoughts and responses that were somewhat less combative. I’m sorry but I have proved the post about Holliday to A’s and I cannot find the exact post now for the Thames/Pena report but I assure you I read it. It was originally posted about a week ago, I believe on the 8th. Next time I read or hear anything I won’t post it without the quote or link…Again i apologize for causing this uproar.

by P Brady on Jul 17, 2008 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Sheesh

Of all the GM’s in baseball, Beane is EASILY the most difficult to read. It may be that he still thinks the A’s have a chance to take the division/wc. In recent years he has acquired Jermaine Dye, Ray Durham, and Jose Guillen near the deadline in attempts to get better.

‘But they traded HARDEN you scream!’ So? Beane has shown a willingness to both buy and sell at the deadline. I’m not saying the deal makes sense to me, but when it comes to Beane, you can pretty much throw common knowledge out the window.

I understand your willingness to flame the Arkansas for this, as he has definitely done his best to stir the pot in recent weeks, but I feel you are shooting the messenger for nor good reason.

And again: Don’t put ANYTHING past Beane. His MO is exploiting market inefficiencies. If he thinks he can give the Rockies what they want, and then spin him again in a chance to make his team better, he will.

by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 17, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank you again...

Not trying to stir the pot..Just passing along things I found. I guess being a newbie here I will just listen to what you say and even if i see something that has definately happened I’ll just let someone else post it. If the Rays do get Thames, which I doubt just for the record, I’ll just sit here and smile….

You realize, that in the 20 something months I've been here you are the only user out of about 700 that has ever complained about the "new user bias"?

Because it doesn’t exist, and when people question you that’s the first card you draw. Stop doing that, post links, and make the source of speculation clearer and you’ll be fine.

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 17, 2008 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Just making a point

I get torched for this and he posted a report about the A’s announcers and did anyone flame him up??? Nope….And same 4-5 people keep coming after me about anything I post.

Or...and let's try this on for size

Olney speculated the same thing on a TV show the day of while Gammons told a reader in NY that Murton/Street is a possibility despite the likely asking price.

But it’s probably because you’re from Arkansas and new. Silly newbie!

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 17, 2008 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Hell with it..

It’s a blog. Not real life. 80% of the stuff involving trades is just speculation on any site until the deal is done. Some guys just don’t understand the concept of sharing stuff with one another without acting like it’s intent is to sabotage the team or the members of this blog. I suppose when you’re with friends in real life, not on a computer screen that you never discuss things you may have heard, much less seen??? You made your point…...

The only reason I could see Beane trading for Holliday

Would be to spin him off again or to get the draft picks.

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 17, 2008 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

He's not gonna overpay on Holliday

Coors field going to that stadium is sure to be a smooth transition. There’s no way it’s worth one of the A’s Big young pitchers for a year and a half of a guy who will struggle in that ballpark. This is getting Ridiculous, if they’re asking price from us do you think beane would pay the price to get an overvalues guy?

Yet another...

Colorado outfielder Matt Holliday knows that he might get traded, and he has heard the A’s mentioned in the speculation. “I hear bits and pieces when people tell you,” he said. “But those are other people’s decisions. I’m just trying to focus on playing. I just play baseball and try to do the best that I can.” ...http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/16/SP8J11PF3H.DTL

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 17, 2008 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't believe it and again as always never sad "I" did

by arkansasraysfan on Jul 17, 2008 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

See, there a few issues here

1) Calm the hell down.
2) Just because a rumor is reported or posted somewhere does not mean it’s A) going to happen B) has been talked about or C) even involved another team. For instance one of the old tricks that Schuerholtz would use is the media. He would feed a “leak” to a reporter who would anxiously “break the story” of a trade close to happening in order to force another team, whom wasn’t in the report, to make the deal or else have the player swept up from beneath their feet.

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 17, 2008 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I see that....

But like I said there have been other posts made similar to mine and because they were members of the site for a while no one said anything about it. Sorry again but I guess I’m used to “calling it like I see it”..If there’s a post on another page from a TV, Radio station etc I like to let others know. Your blog is quite a bit more tenacious than the others I’m active on. You are a little more aggressive for lack of a better word. I gues that’s a good thing to have such a fan base….

Because when anybody else makes a retarted post they eventually say

yeah I’m a dumbass. Instead you try to defend a third-hand rumor. It’s all conjecture. I don’t care where you saw something. It could be on the front page or the NY Times. It does not matter, because if it is utter bullshit then it is utter bullshit. I will bet you any amount of money that Holliday does not go to Oakland Name your price. Season tickets, $10,000, I don’t care. If you can’t take the bet then you don’t even believe your own horseshit that the rest of us are forced to read. There are primary sources and secondary sources. I would consider something that you read on a blog and then took out of context to be at least a quinary source.

why wouldnt beane trade street...

he has contuied to trade some of his players that are a few years away from abritiration for prospects for years now and i dont think he will stop until he thinks he needs to, he is more less takeing the marlins approach to an organization in trading all of his players for top prospects and bank on them to work out and honestly the man knows what he is doing and it seems to have worked for the marlins in the 2 times that they have done it, i mean the marlins traded josh beckett and mike lowell for anibal sanchez and hanley ramirez and so far that trade is about dead even since beckett is one of the most clutch post season pitchers and lowell is also pretty clutch and hanley ramirez is probably the best shortstop in the game and sanchez threw a no-hitter in his rookie year and is now rehabbing his way back, so i think that beane is hopeing that his deals do the same thing.

I absolutely agree

The Marlins and A’s have been able to stay competitive with young talent for years. They see the “upside” of young players probably better than any other teams. The Rays are now on that page building a minor league system second to none. I think there would definitely be some talk involving Rays about both Street and Murton before middle of next week. Rockies have apparently said they would consider Davis in trade for Fuentes but he walks at the end of the year so I don’t know about the “hired gun” thing. The team chemistry is good right now and not sure we need a merc. Street may be had for a few years to come and he’s only 24..Fuentes is 31 or 32. But you’re definitely right about Beane’s aproach.

by arkansasraysfan on Jul 18, 2008 1:56 AM EDT reply actions

ya i think that the rays are going to make a move in the next couple of days

i really think that the rays will try to make a trade for xavier nady and damaso marte or a deal for huston street and matt murton since a couple of trades have happened in the past 2 weeks i think that the rays will join the party and be the first AL team to add someone who can help us reach the playoffs. i would love for the rays to make a 3 way trade for both nady and street but 3 way deals arent made too often
