Listening to Balfour's postgame interveiw last night was classic. He looked as nervous as hell, but he threw out some very typical Aussie cliches that I hadn't heard since my days of watching England Australia cricket matches.

He had the look of "Shit I was in AAA two weeks ago, I can't believe the role I'm in on a serious contender; maybe I am a legit pitcher after all."

I noticed he was really working the corners with that 96mph heat last night. I think I remember a show me curve, but I might be mistaken.

So just for making me crack up (not that it was hard last night in the jovial mood I was in), and putting down the last four outs of the game, I am now, if you will allow me, the new official head of the Grant Balfour cheering section for this site.

Here's to hoping he's the next guy to step up and play well beyond expectations. Maybe we can see what he capable of in the ninth until Percy gets back and keep everyone else in their slots.

He’s definitely pumped, but not out of control.. probably because he’s been in big games before. He pitched middle-relief in a couple outings for the Twins vs. the Yankees in the 2004 ALDS…. and pitched well. Struck out Jeter and got A-Rod to foul out after relieving Johan Santana in an elimination game. Then the rest of the Twins pen blew it.

Can I be official vice-head...?

I won’t contest the head position because I’m not signed in here often enough…

Balf has always had good stuff and I still don’t get why he didn’t make the squad after spring training. But Dohmann continued the way he was pitching, Balf got mad in the minors and got even better, and all is right with the world now.

I just pray that his body holds together and he’s able to keep doing what he’s started as we all enjoy the ride this season is providing.

(as for the interview, I haven’t heard him talk for a while and when he did my wife said “what’s with that accent?” (yes she knows an Aussie accent – look at my username) He’s kinda Americanized some of his vowels but either forgot to keep it up for some words or just doesn’t do it for all of them… he reminded me of a bad Outback Steakhouse commercial… not that it makes me love him any less.)

It was great.. sounded like a mix of Aussie and Deep South to me.
