Durham’s Jeff Niemann, one day after being passed over for a major-league promotion, threw a complete game tonight and struck out 12 in the Bulls’ 7-1 home win over Charlotte.

Niemann threw 74 of his 107 pitches for strikes, allowed seven hits and walked one in the first complete game of his career.

The right-hander was in the majors earlier this season, but the Rays turned to Mitch Talbot on Tuesday night when Troy Percival went on the disabled list. Talbot can adapt to a relief role and fit Tampa Bay’s current need better than Niemann, who is a pure starter.

After getting 2 outs with the bases loaded, Tampa comes through once again. Jason Bartlett gets a 2-out 2-run single off of Javier Lopez, the 4th Boston pitcher on the inning. The 6 runs scored are a combination of timely hitting by Tampa and horrendous pitching by Boston.

The bullpen is in full meltdown mode. Craig Hansen walks the first 2 batters he faces including one with the bases loaded. Longoria follows with a 2-run double to give the Rays the lead. The first 6 batters this inning and there is still nobody out.

And to think, Boston and New York fans were looking forward to the match up starting this weekend. Most years, that is the marquee match up, but this year, Boston-New York resembles more of a side show to the center-stage Rays.

The Boston bullpen is as porous as ever tonight. Manny Delcarmen gives up hits to the 3 batters he faced. Bartlett led off with a double on a full count pitch and then stole 3rd base. Iwamura hits a ground ball to Youkilis at first but does not run over to cover the bag in time for the RBI single. Crawford follows with a sharp single through the hole at 1st base. Francona has seen enough and comes and gets his releiver.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s Shelley Duncan separated his shoulder Tuesday and could miss the rest of the season.
A season-ending injury could take him completely out of the Yankees’ plans. Duncan was hitting .175 before being sent down on June 13. -roto
