Question:
Is it okay to actually cheer for the Yanks in this series? Think about it, you’d rather have them win..

As long as we handle our own business we won’t have to worry about anyone else.

THIS POST NEEDS MORE FUNNY GAME-RELATED PHOTOS TO GO WITH THE FANGRAPH
That said, this game was so incredibly glorious that words won’t do it justice. The fact that the Red Sox added two runs to make it closer in the 9th just make the eventual win and Boston heartbreak that much more delightful.
That botched hit-and-run…with VARITEK at the plate…that’s Gradyesque right there.

Welcome to the low point of the season folks. When was the last time Sean Casey picked up a fucking bat? It just doesn’t make sense to hit Tek in that situation, then send your slowest baserunner when your worst hitter is up at the plate. It’s just fucking asinine is what it is. The only silver lining to take out of this game is that it brings us one step closer to never watching Hansen pitch for this team again.

It was electric
My section had a lot of Boston fans, but they were well-behaved and gracious, even during and after the 7th inning. I was tempted to tell them that they had a nice little team up there in New England, and they should be proud that they still lead the wild card race, but I would really rather exult in the Rays than mock other teams. Real winners expect to win and act accordingly. When I was growing up in NY in the 50s, Yankee fans never seemed to mind if another team beat them and the fans gave them a hard time. They (we) simply smiled, congratulated them and went about our business serene in the knowledge that it was just a battle not the war.

Speaking of SoSH and other Sox comments.
I usually hang out at Baseballthinkfactory.com, and the comments in yesterday’s game thread were very critical of the Sox. but many seemed pleased to have the Rays doing well.
A few comments:
“As a Sox fan this is really irritating. But as a baseball fan this is AWESOME to see the Trop rocking like this for the Rays.”
“It’s kind of weird being in a divisional battle with a team I don’t dislike”
“It’s hard to hate the Rays and only a sadist who follows baseball every ten minutes would”
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.

Give it time...
...give it time. Sooner or later we’ll have some fans on the bandwagon that none of us are too fond of.
People who spew hatred for other teams with reckless abandon.
People who don’t know how to be fans the way fans should be; not respecting other teams or their fans, loudmouth idiots who real fans would so much as be more than willing to put a boot to the ass of them once they decide they might want to jump off the bandwagon to help them off.
People who flick off the television camera because their team is on the road and losing to a good team.
We don’t have any of those kinds of fans just yet, but one of the negative side effects of that popularity comes those asshole type of fans; that’ll give people plenty of reason to hate the Rays soon enough.
by kericr on Jul 3, 2008 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yep, two things will turn people against you: 1) jackass fans and 2) sustained winning.
Take the Braves. They were the lovable underdogs for several years, then they won the WS in 1995 and their run to the playoffs went on for 15 years and suddenly everyone either hated them or were sick to death of them.
Or take the Red Sox until 2004.
Longlorious.

Mets fan here
Considering the colossal wreck that is the Mets season, I’ll be looking forward to September only because the Rays might upset both Evil Empires. The Rays are the coolest underdog story in baseball since at least the 1991 Braves (if not the 1969 Mets) and I’m rooting for them to take the AL East all the way. Heck, I don’t even begrudge you guys having Kazmir. ;-)

Colossal wreck?
The Mets are 4.5 games out of first place. I know they have been disappointing and have a sub-.500 record, but they are still just one more game out of first than Boston is. Although some Boston fans are pretty mad, I doubt any of them think their season is a wreck. Even the Yankees and Tigers, at 7.5 & 7 games out do not consider their season wrecked yet. And the competition in the NL East is certainly very flawed.
Anyway, thanks for the good wishes, but I wouldn’t be so glum about the Mets yet.
by bobr on Jul 3, 2008 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess
But it sure seems like a lot more than 4.5 games when Pedro and Delgado appear to be toast, when Endy Chavez, Brian Schneider and their .600 OPS are in the lineup every night, and when the farm system is dry. Plus, rooting for the Mets makes one an automatic pessemist.
Anyway, Go Rays!

Yes
I would be worried about Pedro, a shame because he has been the greatest pitcher I ever saw bar none. I keep thinking he is so remarkable that he will figure out a way to be effective again even if he has to throw with his left hand.
No question the Mets have holes and little depth. And having lived in NY all my life and had many Mets fans as friends (a group of us used to get 8 pack tickets to the Mets every year) I understand the pessimistic outlook as well. I am not sure that is not the tendency of most fans, but perhaps the Mets are more prone to it.
As long as I have you here, I have to comment that one thing that always amused me was that after every game, no matter the opponent or result, some Mets fans would be chanting “Yankees suck” as we left the stadium. It was so incongruous. You just lost to Montreal or beat Colorado in June, but some fans were focused on the crosstown team. And there was not necessarily anyone around wearing Yankee garb. They were chanting into the air, not with any target in sight.
