Jonny's last stand???
As we all know Jonny Gomes has struggled with the bat this season, and that the Rays are possibly going to be picking up a full time RF bat he in the next week or so. With that said, the A's are coming to town and will be starting 3 lefties in a row (yay-not), which means Jonny will start all 3 games... If his bat fails us again, could this be the last we hear of him in a Rays uniform? At what point does Andrew pull the plug??? any thoughts?

if he struggles i dont think we have seen the last of him
i think he might get DFA but even then i think he will see him up in september if no one claims him or trades for him

if he does well, then it's the last we've seen of him in a rays uniform.
as much as i looooove the guy, he has no place on this team long term, and maybe even this year. time to get what we can.

I hope three games don't decide his fate...
I imagine Friedman and Co. have an idea of Jonny’s fate right now. I imagine they’re too smart and well planned to let a three game span change anything. That’s unless he hits like five homeruns or strikes out 12 times.

I remember Friedman making a comment...
During the Indians series, where he stated that some players have been performing well below career norms, and it is bound to change. Typically we have been talking about Pena, CC, and Upton when we comment about how they are well below career averages right now. But the context Friedman was talking in, it appeared he was talking about Gomes, and his ability to hit lefties throughout his career. At this point, I wouldnt be surprised to see them stick with Gomes and hope he reverts back to his career norms…especially if the asking price for some of these RH bats is so high.

I still don't know why this guy was on the roster post ASB.
I think Gomes is gone before the trade deadline unless he somehow manages to get really hot (and I’m not talking about going 4-15 with a homer and change over these three games, I mean more like his offensive production alone would win all three games hot). I mean, there are slumps, and then there are the times in one’s career where they need to seriously reassess their chosen profession. Gomes is there. He can’t hit and he can’t field. Yes, we’re all sure he’s a great clubhouse guy, but these guys are men and I’m pretty sure 1/2 the team isn’t going to go out and string themselves up on nooses in the rotunda if he is shown the door.

GOmes has obviously has sucked this season...
But at points in his career he has shown he can swing the bat. His LH splits have been GREAT throughtout his career up until this season. Having said that, he is running out of time because he just simply isnt getting the job done this season.

I'm sure people were telling Jorge Cantu the same thing before this year
Vogt early, Vogt often.

in his three seasons before this...
Mr. Gomes had OPS+ of 139, 95, and 105. In 127 plate appearances this year (about 1/9th of his total up to this point), he’s got an OPS+ of 88 - yes, he’s actually doing that well even with a sub.200 batting average.
Don’t overreact. Jason Bay is way better. But Gomes is better than his first half.

And if Gomes could perform even close to his 2055-2007 splits versus LHP's
Then he would be a great addition to the team. Maybe it is the inconsistent playing time, but he is way off this season.
