A team source said the Rockies have asked for Rays Double-A starter Wade Hendrickson [sic], the Yankees' Ian Kennedy, the Red Sox's Clay Buchholz or Mets minor-leaguer Jon Niese. Florida is monitoring Fuentes but is reluctant to part with a young starter. The price for Fuentes has left teams taking a longer look at Oakland's Huston Street.
I assume he meant Wade Davis, but Davis is now in AAA, so maybe Jeremy Hellickson? Either way, that's a hefty price for a soon to be free agent reliever.

This can't be correct.
They want Clay Buchholz from the Sox, but will take Ian Kennedy from the yanks.
Buchholz =/= Kennedy
I think these guys in Denver just make up stuff. I mean Wade Hendrickson??? NICE reporting.

i thought the rumor was about Holliday at first
Nice, try O’Dowd.
and while IPK is a decent prospect, he’s not in the category of Buchholz, or even Davis. In fact, Fuentes for IPK might be fair. might

I still don't want to trade Wade Davis
at least not for a rental. Hell, I’m not even too keen on trading Niemann for a rental.

Orvella would save us all!

Online-speak often betrays sarcasm...
So it is hard for me to discern the absolute seriousness of that statement. However, I’m going to risk exposing my “youth” of fandom and ask the following: “I can only barely recall Orvella actually pitching – what was his deal? Because I recall him producing very high ‘SUCK+’ numbers, yet members of this blog berating me for not clarifying whether I was talking about post-injury or pre-injury Orvella. When, how did he get injured? I know he’s been on the DL since I was in high school, but frankly I’m not sure why.”

Orvella was an excellent relief prospect...
He pitched well briefly in the Bigs, then they tinkered with his mechanics to speed up his delivery and he sucked after that. I am convinced them messing with a good thing is the reason why he fell apart.

What a whacked out set of guys
On what planet are Clay Buchholz, Ian Kennedy and Jon Niese of equal value? Niese would be fine – that would be almost as if we traded Niemann for him. I could live with Niese for Fuentes, but anything beyond that is psychotic.
Sounds like O’Dowd might be overplaying his hand. His team isn’t in contention, and there’s a guy they’re not going to resign. I’m sorry, but even if he gets 2 sandwich picks, any of those guys are infinitely more valuable in the long-term. Based on what’s been going on with trades lately, I get the feeling that GMs are starting to overvalue the comp draft picks (as opposed to how they undervalued them a few years ago).

Davis, Hellickson, and LaPorta are all about equal
LaPorta landed the Brewers Sabathia. So there is no way on this planet we should give either one of them up for Fuentes.
Heck the Cubs gave up GALLAGHER and got Harden. He is worse than all 3 of those guys I mentioned.

Hellickson =/= LaPorta
The Cubs gave up more than just Gallagher

Murton? Ok so we throw in Gomes or Ruggiano…Surely that wouldn’t be a deal breaker..
by matthan on Jul 23, 2008 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And yes LaPorta is better than Hellickson
But not by much. LaPorta will be a top 15 prospect and Hellickson will be top 25.

Yes, because he is a Gator
But he is no Tim Tebow
by matthan on Jul 23, 2008 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I believe that is spelled Gay-tor
Tebow would make a pretty fine fullback in the NFL if he could quit playing grabass all the time.

He is a tremendous college football player, and even a better person. But carry on….

How did I badmouth him?
So you see him succeeding as a QB at the NFL level?

I ddidnt really get the grab ass comment...
Unless it was part of the Gay’tor joke. That aside, I’m not a professional scout, and I imagine you arent either. What I do know is he has a long delivery similar to Chris Simms. He also has a strong arm and is pretty accurate. He improved his throwing technique a good amount from Fresh to Soph year. He also is a mobile QB that can pick up 1st downs with his legs.
Do I think he can be a good QB in the NFL? HE certainly is athletic enough…but as with most QB’s, it depends on the system and who surrounds him. If you think Tom Brady would be an elite QB with a crap offensive line then you are kidding yourself.
I’m not a huge Gator fan btw….I root for all the Florida schools, because I had to defend them all when I went to college out of state.

Well said
but the Chris Simms comparison might be a Kiss of Death. We will see this year after teams have had a chance to make adjustments to him being the full time QB. I think my biggest question is how he would do in a more traditional system. Alex Smith tore it up under Meyer. He isn’t as big as Tebow, but he is faster, and from what I have seen Smith is about one year away from being a full blown bust.
So clearly, my comments aren’t so much an indictment on his ability as much as the system he is in and whether he will be able to become a better pocket passer in the NFL. I want to see him scrambling around when he is not one of the 3 biggest guys on the field.

Sign of true Genius
You should have gone all the way and said Gay-Turd. Of course we don’t need to make similar jokes about UCF. We just point out that your awesome Conference Championship team couldn’t find the end-zone against Mississippi State (ESPN’s schedule/results page doesn’t go back far enough for me to tell you the last team that didn’t do so)

Much higher

In prospect world, there’s usually a bigger difference between 10 and 20 than there is between 20 and 100.

How much of this is irresponsible journalism?
I am so sick and tired of these clowns just throwing out ideas and seeing which ones stick. I blame ESPN everyone wants to break a story instead of just reporting what happens. Cut the speculation nonsense PUHHH-leeeze Mr. Journalist. Oh BTW, we had better get a ridiculous player for Wade Hendrickson. That must be some conglomeration of like 5 different pitchers in our farm system so we don’t want to leave it wrecked.

I think I know what's going on
Dan O’Dowd is on the fence between punting the season or trying to compete in the weak NL West, so he’s making crazy demands for his players. If someone gives in, he’s got a steal, and he sells the rest real quick for whatever he can get. If no one gives in, then he can’t say he gave up on the season and didn’t get anything good in return. He’s basically scared.

I agree
Last year’s magical season also likely makes it difficult for him to face reality. They are currently 7 games back, and I’m sure that at a sizable part of their fan-base is screaming “We were that far back in the first week of September LAST year”
