Could tonight be Price's last as a Biscuit??
Cummings was named to the Olympic team and there is now a spot open in the Durham rotation. Tonight will be David's sixth start as a Biscuit, the same amount he had in Vero Beach. Also, he has been nothing short of dominant in AA (minus the one game that he actually gave up HR's).

I would not all be suprised.
How would you like to be a AAA team and have to face Davis, Price, and Niemann. In fact can we just take Durham to KC and let those 3 start and give our guys some more rest.

Dominant?
Price has been very good in AA, but I think “dominant” is an overstatement. Dominant, to me, means striking out over 10 per 9 innings at least. In 31 IP Price is at 7.26/9, good but not great. He is walking 2.9/9 (admittedly his first game really raised that rate) for a 2.5 K/BB rate. Again, excellent but not dominant. He is allowing 7.5 hits/9, also very good but not indicative of dominance. His ground ball to fly ball ratio is 1.32 and batters are hitting .228 against him.
Look at two other AA pitchers. Trevor Cahill is 2 years younger and in 32 innings he has Ked 8.2/9. He has allowed far more walks (4.2/9) but only 5.9 hits, 2 home runs and has a ground ball ratio of 3.85 and a .189 BA against.
Or how about Brett Anderson, lefty like Price and also 2 years younger. He has fewer innings (18) but has a 10.5/9 K rate, 3/9 BB rate and a .190 BA against as well as a 5 ground ball ratio.
The Rays have made clear that priority one is focusing on the development of its top prospects. They may move Price up quickly as they did Longoria; he may even make the majors this year. But only if he is clearly ready, not because the team might be able to use him as an improvement over Glover or Hammel or anyone else. They will not make the error the Dodgers made with Edwin!!!!
If anything, Kershaw should be a warning signal to us all. His AA numbers this year have been better than Price’s across the board, and he already has 2 years more pro experience, but his major league performance has been very disappointing, and in a far better pitcher’s park.
Or Buchholz, who at age 22 in AA last year had numbers (over a longer period) significantly better than Price’s, and whose reputation was at least as good as David’s, maybe better, but who, even after time in AAA has been erratic in the majors. If Buchholz was not considered the number one minor league pitching prospect, even the overall #1, it was Phil Hughes whose AAA numbers last year were better than Price’s but who also was erratic and then injured.
Don’t believe the hype, and don’t add to it. I am as confident that Price will be an outstanding major leaguer as I am about any player I have ever seen, but he needs time to develop and must not be rushed.

Fine, he is great/excellent/awesome/stupendous/kickass/super-dee-dooper
And I never said that the Rays were going to rush the guy up through the system so he could replace Glover/Hammel. I don’t care if he does make it to the majors before the September call-ups, I was simply pointing out that he may be moving on to a stint in Durham. I think he has been excellent thus far, and cannot wrap my head around the E-Jax analogy at all. Edwin was 19, had switched positions, and was absolutely brought up WAY TOO EARLY. Price has much more experience than him at pitching as well. All that being said, I still don’t expect to see Price before September, if even then. The Rays may find him and Davis better used in Durham for the playoffs, rather than as extra arms in the bullpen (although I doubt it).
Finally, a lot of the hype does include some form of hyperbole, but there is plenty of evidence that he is going to be an awesome starting pitcher in the years to come for the Rays.

Totally agree.
People should be excited about David Price. But anything he gives the Rays this year is simply gravy, and he shouldn’t be counted on for anything.

I was just referring to
this sentence from your post:
“Also, he has been nothing short of dominant in AA (minus the one game that he actually gave up HR’s).”
I think he has been short of dominant.
As for moving up, you may indeed be right. My response there was not really to you (which I should have made clear) but to numerous other posts that have called for his immediate promotion to the Rays.
I also agree that we have every reason to be very optimistic about Price.

And of course as I posted this today...Price gives up another HR tonight
I agree that those who think Price should be up here by the beginning of August are off their rocker. I still think that a move will come soon, if not this week. However, he should receive a decent amount of starts in Durham in order to continue his development. I don’t expect Price to immediately fly up to the majors and take the world by storm. He will be an above average number four starter next year and continue to progress throughout the season and into the next year, much like Kaz or a guy like Lincecum. They both flashed brilliance and looked amazing at times, while at other times showed their youth and they weren’t completely there yet (nor do I think either has reached their full potential by any means).
I think Price will have much more of an effect on next year’s squad because then we will see a rotation of Kaz, Shields, Garza, Price, Sonnanstine/Niemann(with the other being in the bullpen, or Nieman being on another team) to start the year, and then possibly have the addition of Davis in the middle of the season (moving either Andy or Jeff to the bullpen). Our staff will be great for years to come.

Lincecum struck out nearly 15/Nine Innings in the minors
Kaz struck out around 11 per nine in the minors. I think Price may still need more time.

And in Lincecum's case
He was just so ridiculously dominant he never really gave the Giants a choice in the matter, posting a 37 inning scoreless inning streak, and an ERA of 1.00

oh he's ready for AAA i think
i think that the rays will have price make 5 or 6 starts in AAA and then will call him up sometime in august which would boost the starting rotation even more and NOT the bullpen, i dont want to see him in the pen i think he belongs in the rotation in for edwin jackson aka “MR. inconsistency”!
by RaysOfHope on Jul 23, 2008 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Then move Jackson to the pen?
I’d assume this would be the only option in that scenario.
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
no move jackson to another team, if not that than move sonny to the pen instead
I believe that after this season that edwin is eligilble for arbiration after this season right? i say that they non tender him and let him walk to another team since he is so inconsistent none of us would miss him and then move sonny to the pen for the rest of the year and have sonny be the #5 starter next year until wade davis is ready
by RaysOfHope on Jul 24, 2008 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
These are the kinds of guys you non-tender. Not a guy who pitches league-average at age 24 and still has a couple of years of team control….Especially when health isn’t an issue.
by GomesSweetGomes on Jul 24, 2008 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
then you want edwin as the rays # 5 starter next year? i would but for 1mil or less
honestly i have always liked edwin jackson because everyone knows that he has the type of stuff to just be dominanting and has shown us some of that potential this year. honestly it is even really his fault for the first couple of years of his career in the big leagues, its the dodgers who rushed him to the majors at age 20 when he seeemed to maybe need 1 more year of seasoning but they just love to rush every pitching prospect that they have and edwin more less had to learn how to pitch in the big leagues the last couple of years and look at what they have done to clayton kershaw this year as well, age 20 promoted straight from AA and is getting light up lately, the dodgers organization just loves to screw up the first couple of years of their pitching prospects careers by throwing them into the fire

It all depends on how the guys in the minors progess
As well as whats on the trade table for our prospects at this moment. Giving him away for free would be a big mistake, and could set us back just as much or more, than overpaying at the deadline. I’m not holding out hope that he can be a top of the rotation guy, but there have been too many guys that struggled early, and then finally saw things click in their late 20’s (Loaiza, Carpenter, Schmidt) to start giving away guys for free.

the dodgers really dont know what they are doing when it comes to any of their prospects
the rays seem to abosultely know what they are doing with almost all of their prospects position and pitching, they seem to know when the right time to promote them to another level when to let someone go, even some have gotten other chances with other teams cantu, waecther, i dont count hamilton since he had to go with all of the personal issues with him. most of this team is the top prospects that we had and im glad that the rays didnt give up on some even though they failed in a couple chances (upton), but the dodgers just give up on them and will get burned and deserve since they didnt know how to handle them when they had them (navvy, jackson, ruggiano someday)

im not happy that he is still inconsistent but he has improved alot over the last year
that first half last year of edwin was just horrible, but in the second half at times he was a different pitcher and this year he has also show his potential to be a top pitcher in this league, i guess i can live with the inconsistency for now as long as he continues to become close to the pitcher that he was when he was a bigtime prospect
